According to The Courier, Arsenal have agreed to sign Callan Hamill from St Johnstone for a six-figure sum.
After trialling with the Gunners for several months, including being part of the under-17 squad that won the Flamengo Adidas Cup in Brazil in December, the Scotland youth international will join the Arsenal Academy full-time when he turns 16 next month.
The report claims Hamill has been offered a four-year contract although, given his age, he can’t actually sign professional terms until he’s 17. Presumably, the Gunners are confident they’ve found a gem and that he’ll progress accordingly after his scholarship year.
As a reminder, Premier League clubs haven’t been allowed to sign under-18 players from overseas for four years since Britain reached agreement on its withdrawal from the European Union.
Anyway, congrats to the lad. May the force be with him.
Scottish roots run fairly deep at the Arsenal (George Graham, Frank McLintock, Alex James, Bob Wilson, Big Willie Young, Charlie Nicholas, KT…). Look forward to seeing Callan don the Arsenal shirt.
Paul Dickov?
Average player, painful name.
Hah! Great name!!!
Don’t forget Eddie Kelly. Scored winning goal in FA Cup Final 1971. I recall that when I was young, much of Arsenal’s Scottish contingent came from a youth team called Possilpark YMCA.
Think you’ll find Charlie George scored the winner in 71.
Can he score two off the bench?
Took me a second to get the Star Wars reference – it is still early!
Young Colin Hendry.
I believe he is a defender
