Flamengo’s attempts to sign Jorginho this month have been rebuffed by Arsenal but the midfielder is set to sign a pre-contract agreement with the Brazilian side that would see him arrive in time for the FIFA Club World Cup.
The 33-year-old Italy international has been an important squad member for Mikel Arteta since arriving from Chelsea two years ago. However, with a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi in the pipeline, the Gunners aren’t looking to extend his current deal.
Jorginho left Brazil to pursue his football career in Italy when he was just 15 so you can understand the allure of a return home before he turns his attention to coaching.
Flamengo are one of six South American teams to participate in FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup and will fancy their chances of qualifying from a group featuring Jorgi’s old club Chelsea, Tunisia’s ‘Esperance de Tunis and Mexico’s Leon.
Jorginho is under contract at the Emirates until 30 June but will presumably receive permission from Arsenal to depart during a short transfer window exclusively for Club World Cup sides between 1 and 10 June before the competition starts in the USA on 14 June.
Good. Lots of football still to be played and he’s a great squad player. Would still trust him to start most games for us.

Consummate professional. I would him back as a coach in the future if he wants to return.
I think it’s clear he is a future coach. A very intelligent, young (well compared to me he is!) man. Maybe a future Arsenal coach?
Pretty sure he’ll be back with us in some form not long after his playing career is over.
Top pro , ya let him go if he wants but will have big part to play in our season yet.
I wonder would chelsUSA ever take Sterling back ans give us Nkunku
Can we at least renew TP5… Its going to be very difficult to find a like for like replacement.
100%
100%, we can’t loose x2 centre midfielders and sign only one. Although I’m very excited about MZ signing…..
Totally agree—Thomas Partey is key for us. His performances over the last 12 months, highlighted by our win ratio when he starts in midfield, fully justify an extension.
He’s in good form right now but hasn’t always been the last two seasons, when many have said we should sell him ASAP. I love him but think at 32 next year it’s unreaosnable to expect him to continue being this good, and probably best to move on earlier rather than later. Rice and Zubimendi should be a great tag team for that position, plus I think Merino and MLS could play there too for extra cover.
Might offer him a 1+1 deal but we have to take into consideration that Merino, Nwaneri and MLS (and maybe Dowman and Zubimendi) will need more minutes to share in the midfield next year.
Don’t see how TP5 is taking minutes off Nwaneri or MLS and let’s face it, TP5 is simply better than Merino
Two very different profiles (anchor vs left 8) but imo if we sign Zubimendi that means Partey is leaving
This has been a lowkey hilarious transfer saga, the entire window of Flamengo saying “WE HAVE SIGNED JORGINHO” like they could just will it into existence rather than negotiating with us, and every time an article about it was posted its final line was something like “when asked for comment an exasperated Arsenal representative said Flamengo definitely haven’t signed Jorginho”. I’m curious to see whether Flamengo will continue the charade by naming Jorginho in their starting lineups and instructing their players to pass to the place they imagine him being in the team.
Maybe an intro video with a cardboard cutout of him too wearing his new Flamengo kit.
It looks like we’re planning on replacing 2 players with one, here. I’d have liked to have seen Jorginho back for another year, but what can you do?
Arsenal’s preference to pay retirement benefits to Chelsea retirees is shocking. Luiz, Willian, Cech etc. He should not have been recruited in the first place. Good passer of the ball but weak in defence, bullied and his legs went long ago. Modern midfielders require skill sets more than passers. He’s 34 not 33 and he should’ve gone last summer, and replaced with a younger midfielder. I hope this is the last time Arsenal paid pension to Chelsea retirees. A coach at Arsenal? He should go and practice his coaching at Chelsea where he’s regarded as a legend. No more Chelsea… Read more »
Serious question. Have you watched him play for us? If so you know we’re the team in red and white?
😂🤣😂
And the winner of today’s ridiculous post of the day goes to ???
Today’s? How about the season’s?
He’s 33 until he turn 34. That’s how it works.
Dude, you’re awesome. You should do a blog!
And Havertz? You know, the guy we rescued from Chelsea, and who scored yesterday?
We really need to get Partey signed up for next season. Even if we get Zubimendi, having this Partey their to play 25% of minutes would be massive. He was the best player on the pitch yesterday.
Let’s hope he can depart a legend after the CL final on 31st May!
Returning home a hero. Well done to the veteran, but still loads of football. I wish him every joy upon his return.
