Report: Knee surgery fears for Tomiyasu

According to the Daily Mail, Takehiro Tomiyasu may require surgery to fix the persistent knee problem that has wrecked his season.

The Japan international first picked up the injury in pre-season and was forced to miss the club’s tour of the USA. He battled back to fitness by October, making a brief cameo in the 3-1 win over Southampton, but suffered a setback and hasn’t featured in a matchday squad since.

While there were hopes he was on the road to recovery – Mikel Arteta even confirmed last month that he was back on the grass – his absence from this week’s warm-weather training camp suggests all is not well.

It’s another serious blow for a player whose four years at the club have been marred by injuries.

He missed much of the second half of his debut season (21/22) with calf problems, underwent knee surgery in March 2023, and struggled again with his calves last term. Despite that, he was handed a contract extension last year and was hopeful of repaying the club’s in him. Unfortunately, things haven’t worked out that way.

If surgery is required, it’s hard to see him featuring again this season. We can only wish him the best with his recovery.

We should be entitled to a bulk discount at this rate.

Any chance we might have taken this option about a year ago when he last played (or whenever it was). Good player on his day, sadly one we need to move on from now.

Carlos

Sorry to see his arsenal career ruined in such a way. He looked so promising when he had a run of games in the squad.

Joker

Have to feel for Tomiyasu. He’s a great player but he’s approaching Diaby levels of fitness issues now. Hopefully any surgery he undergoes will get to the root of the problem and he can come back strong.

A very good players but ruin by injuries.. Its time we caught lose of him and move on… I think Tierney has stayed fit more tomiyasu

SteveC

Super player and a sad situation, both for him and the club. I know hindsight is wonderful but I hope someone is asking why this decision was not taken earlier because, if it had, he might be well on the way to recovery rather than facing another prolonged absence

TheLimpBar

Don’t give up on Tomi! Absolutely love him as a defender, he can come back. Got to feel for the guy right now, here’s wishing him all the best.

Lee

I love him too, but I doubt he’s ever coming back. He barely plays and he’s always injured, God forbid he actually did play.

wrightstuff8

Poor Tomi 🙁
Devastated for the lad.
Get well soon

A second knee op is usually the death nail for a footballer at the highest level. ☹️

Guns Up

Just heard a rumor that Havertz may have something hamstring related, but no real details. It’s enough already. Can we just skip ahead to August and the new season??

Amb

He has been absent from photos and video from training camp. So something is no right

Kelv

The reason he’s not in the photos is that he was the guy who took them. Duh. He’s got one of them new phones with the 80 billion terapixel HD camera.

Jeremy

Yup, according to multiple news outlets he has a hamstring sprain (usually anywhere between 2 weeks and 1 month + out). Within days of the transfer window closing we have lost our first choice left winger and centre forward. Our entire attack is now two academy graduates (one can’t even use the men’s changing room and the other has never scored a goal at men’s level), Trossard and a washed up Raheem Sterling who isn’t even our player. You have to admit it’s quite funny. Its only football, and laughing is better than crying so…

Sancheezy

I wonder if we can recall Viera and Nelson from their loans. They would be getting more playing time if they had stayed with the club for sure.

Nelson is injured again

Kelv

I can see us repurposing Zinchenko and Kiwior as forwards before the season is out.

Grump

And just before the breaking news that Kai Havertz has done his hamstring in Dubai. The incompetence of our board is breathtaking.

Kelv

He missed 22 games over the two seasons before he signed for us. Clearly a very talented and very versatile player, but given our recent history of players with long-term fitness problems and making injury-prone players even more injury-prone…

Kelv

Anyway, good luck Tomi.

LOVE our Tomi; whatever he needs, give it to him

Sancheezy

Absolutely gutted for Tomi. I really hope he pulls through this and gets back on the field. Whether it’s with Arsenal or another club, he’s
been a total professional and wish him the best regardless. He’s got amazing qualities as a defender. Get well soon, Tomi!!!

Mark

I forgot he appeared in one game this year. What a colossal waste of money for the transfer fee and the salary he has received. Only started 16 league matches over the last three seasons and hasn’t been available off the bench that much either. Obviously it’s not his fault, but he has to go down as one of the most frail players we’ve had (and there have been many).

SLC Gooner

I feel awful for him. Quality player when healthy, but that’s been almost never for us. If he truly has something more than a meniscus tear, going to be hard for him to come back and get many minutes.
