Report: Martinelli to miss a month with hamstring strain

According to David Ornstein, Gabriel Martinelli could spend more than a month on the sideline after picking up a hamstring strain in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian winger pulled up after about half an hour, to be replaced by Ethan Nwaneri, but travelled with the squad to Dubai for the warm-weather training camp.

However, after a scan, it looks as if he will miss a number of the Gunners upcoming fixtures, and it’s another injury blow in a season which has had too many of those already.

Speaking after the close of the transfer window during which Arsenal failed to add to the squad, Mikel Arteta stressed the importance of keeping players fit, but it feels typical that our inaction in the transfer market has immediately been compounded by another injury.

That leaves Arteta with just Kai Havertz, Leandro Trossard and Raheem Sterling as his senior options for the forward line – although the emergence of Nwaneri feels very timely, and he is likely to accumulate more starts and minutes during the period of Martinelli’s absence.

This fucking season…

foffpep

Fuck it! Right up! Just about had enough of this. Suppose it’s karma for screwing the league in the last two seasons.

Just regroup next season – hopefully after getting rid of who we need to get rid of, and buy sensibly!!!

Hi-brid

Promote Tierney to left wing cover.

Sam

Rather him than Sterling that’s for sure

Andy

You’d have thought we’d have learned our lesson with the long stream of ex Chelsea time wasters.

Lucas

Last positive temporary signing we had from other PL clubs I think is Yossi Benayoun!! That was ages ago!

Ebo

Like Kai Havertz and Jorginho? The two players ee bought from Chelsea just before Sterling? My god.

Frosty

Yup. He swings a decent cross in, and promptly.

Bleeding Gums Murphy

I’m told we could have re called viera and decided not too. Why

Ast R

Told by who?

Jesus of Sao Paulo

Fuckin shit! It’s just the most Arsenal thing! Fingers crossed for Bukayo Saka to come back soon with no setbacks.

Lee

Raheem Sterling is in such a privileged position right now. He’s going to come back from Dubai, full of whatever juice Arteta gave the team last time, stop Liverpool from winning the league and win himself a big fat contract anywhere but Arsenal.

…please.

Naked Cygan

It will give Nwaneri more game time and hopefully in few weeks Martinelli and Saka will be back.

Will`

I’m sorry but this is on the club. I understand keeping your powder dry for a big summer, but if they expected our injury issues to decrease at the LATTER stages of the season, they’ve deluded themselves. If anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if they increased. Negligent and more concerned with Arsenal balance sheet than Arsenal victory. I’m now starting to just hope we retain our place in the top 4/5.

Jeremy

Should be too far ahead at this point, especially with 5 places likely up for grabs. I’m not taking anything for granted though.

Reality check

He was going to be played on the right where he’s not effective at all, so won’t be missing much. Hopefully he’ll get to play on the left again when he comes back.

Dennis (from Fantasy Football KE)

At tnis point we need width ….thats one less squad member.

Fatgooner

It’s a good thing that we bought those two attacking players in the January transfer window.

Ast R

Right!?!

TexasRed

Which ones?

Ast R

That’s the scouts job. We don’t need to tell chefs what ingredients to use.

TexasRed

Body A and Body B?

Dennis (from Fantasy Football KE)

Said it here and I’ll say it again we traded a chance at success now to have a good summer. ..and now we are paying the price. That extra forward would have meant an extra body in the squad and extra source of goals. But as usual Arsenal prefer to learn the hard way. Well continue suffering until we appreciate life’s lessons. The season was gone anyways. Quick recovery to our Jogo Bonito

Joker

Exactly, the season was gone anyway. Why blow the transfer budget on a stop gap signing?

Ast R

So last 16 of the champions league is “season was gone”? What do some of you actually want?

Joker

Do you think spending a huge chunk of our summer transfer budget on a short term signing like Watkins would have given us the boost needed to overtake Liverpool in the league or propel us to the Champion’s League final? I don’t. We’ve suffered too many injuries and had too many setbacks. We’ll likely still finish in the top four and if we’re lucky may even enjoy progression through a round or two of the Champion’s League knockout stages but in terms of winning silverware the season is done. We don’t have the numbers or quality in depth in forward… Read more »

Ast R

I do understand your point of view on this. I suppose I’m grappling with the question of what is the added incentive for the club to really maximise the next summer transfer window, when it’s been apparent for some time that the attack needed attention. Just because it’s the summer window doesn’t mean it won’t turn out like last summer.

TexasRed

Who was available and at what price?

Ast R

Is that our job?

Neil

Marinelli being out means Ethan has to cover for both Saka and Nelli! Big shoes to fill.

Joker

Yay.

djourou's nutmeg

that means more minutes for ethan and less pointless persistence on a player that has produced nothing for us in two years, so while i hope he recovers well and etc… im not bothered at all

Jeremy

I’m so sorry for Martinelli who was playing well but this is expected Arsenal karma (or karmasenal…bite me). Immediate consequences for a series of stupid decisions. Rightly or wrongly we made our own bed on this one by not making attacking signings last summer. The result is inevitable sadly. Oh well.

Qwaliteee

You couldn’t make it up if you tried…..

Ast R

But Arsenal seem to quite a bit. By now the club should be able to predict these things and plan accordingly.

thw14

Sure hope some of that dry powder is medicinal.

wrightstuff8

Fuck

Michael

Not an Arsenal fan, but as a neutral, the league is obviously a big ask, but I have a sneaking feeling this could finally be Arsenal’s year in Europe, with players coming back as each round gets harder. Good luck!
