Arsenal: Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly, Partey, Rice, Odegaard, Trossard, Martinelli, Havertz
Subs: Setford, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Calafiori, Tierney, Jorginho, Merino, Nwaneri, Sterling
Arsenal ensured they won’t be heading to Wembley this season after losing their Carabao Cup second leg 2-0 to Newcastle at St James’ Park, thanks to goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon (4-0 aggregate).
Mikel Arteta named an unchanged side from Sunday’s 5-1 win over Manchester City, with Myles Lewis-Skelly keeping his place ahead of Riccardo Calafiori and Ethan Nwaneri on the bench.
Tommy Setford was also named among the substitutes with Neto cup tied after playing in the competition for Bournemouth earlier this season.
After starting quickly against City, it looked like Arsenal would be on the other end of a fast start when Alexander Isak ran off the back of Gabriel before blasting beyond Raya after just three minutes.
That strike put St James’ Park into party mode, but the visitors were rescued by a late offside flag with Isak judged to have strayed offside from the initial pass. It was a huge slice of luck and one that should have been a wake up call.
But the game continued as it started and Arteta’s men really struggled to settle early on, with Newcastle pressing and harrying at every opportunity which disrupted their passing game.
They eventually found their rhythm though and Martin Odegaard was inches away from scoring the early goal Arteta desperately craved, striking the post from close range after Gabriel Martinelli was clattered by Dan Burn on the edge of the area.
With just under 20 minutes on the clock that should have been game on for Arsenal, instead the tie became an almost impossible task after conceding less than a minute later.
Isak was causing problems for William Saliba yet again and after nicking the ball ahead of him, he played a quick one-two with Anthony Gordon before smashing a left footed strike onto the post – but it dropped perfectly for Jacob Murphy on the rebound. 1-0.
The visitors were surprisingly open early on and Isak had been threatening all game up until that point, although it goes to show just how fine the margins are sometimes.
Things went from bad to worse after the half hour mark when Martinelli went down injured – clutching his hamstring – with Ethan Nwaneri coming on to replace him. The fixture schedule isn’t as hectic as it was, but the timing felt typical after the club opted against signing anybody during the January window.
You could see Arsenal becoming increasingly frustrated and Kai Havertz was booked after shoulder charging Bruno Guimaraes by the corner flag, before Saliba found himself in the book for fouling Gordon after misjudging the flight of the ball.
Half time provided some respite for the Gunners who needed some time to regroup, but the focus should have been centred around avoiding embarrassment and further injuries.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Newcastle should have doubled their lead after Saliba (who struggled in the first period) gave the ball straight to Gordon with Raya out of his goal but the English winger curled inches wide.
That did nothing to change the Arsenal mentality with Raya gifting Newcastle their second just minutes later. After delaying on the ball, he sold Declan Rice a hospital pass which was intercepted by Fabian Schar, allowing Gordon to turn and shoot beyond the Spaniard under zero pressure. 2-0.
Arteta then decided to change things with half an hour to play, replacing Odegaard and Leandro Trossard with Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling, in what felt like a “white flag” switch.
With 15 minutes remaining, both sides knew the game was done and Arteta made further changes with Calafiori and Jorginho coming on for Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey. The referee’s full time whistle ended a second half that seemed to last an eternity.
Arsenal already had a mountain to climb after their first leg defeat, but the overall performance fell way short of what was needed to overturn that two-goal deficit. Collectively and individually the team were not good enough and mistakes were punished clinically by some excellent forwards.
Get everybody relaxed and rested in Dubai, and attack the second half of the season with some fresh legs.
Absolutely fucking pathetic. Again.
A true supporter
It was pathetic though. Not every ‘true supporter’ can watch shit like that and dance through fields of unicorns and daisies in some emotional vacuum.
Newcastle were desperate and put in a good pressing shift, whereas we look tired and the rest hasn’t come too soon.
Let’s not forget that they did not play any european games this year
Let’s not forget we have extra income from European games from the last 2 seasons to have a bigger squad to cope with extra games. Can’t just keep playing the same core group of players into the ground until they are injured
Why weren’t we desperate? It’s not like we’ve been routinely winning trophies .
I can. If I have to. Full of emotion Gooner till I die
But you don’t have to. Get upset. Be happy. Discuss your concerns. Be critical. Praise them. Rag on the opposition. And the bent refs. And the pundits. It’s all ok. You can feel. It doesn’t make you less of a supporter.
I love the club but that was pathetic….again.
Your seat at the toilet bowl awaits you….
Why was it pathetic though?
A. Kroenke is shit.
B. Mikel Arteta is shit.
C. Havertz is Shit.
D. None of the above.
E. All of the above.
Fine margins. Odegaard scores and we’re back in it. If we’re gonna lose a game I’d rather lose this one than any other.
Disappointing, but not really surprising. We look like a team that need a decent break and are running out of players quickly.
The one big regret is if Martinelli is injured,
It’s a shame we didn’t have a transfer window recently, to get some bodies in. If our scouts can’t scourer this planet for players that could have helped us this season and not this unicorn mythical perfect striker we need, just some good players, then we’re not serious about the rest of this season.
Yeah! They could have popped down to the local Striker Supermarket and done a two-for-one deal. Easy peasy.
To clarify, what I was saying was I feel time spent trying to find the PERFECT striker has hindered our ability to add good players to our attack. A good player can contribute significant goals. If the club is hesitant to buy as they’re waiting for the perfect striker then they’re missing opportunities to get other players that may not be world class but can still offer a lot.
So you saying in the Top 5 European league
There’s not a single person that Arsenal can get that can do a Job
Not too much
Maybe manage a goal every 180 minutes.
Let us stop making excuses for this club
Club that really want it don’t go about making excuses.
That’s why not signing an extra body upfront in Jan was dumb!
We have always been a club who is one or two players away from being dominant. But we always, somehow, manage to not get the needed player(s) in. It’s really sad.
Just remember, it wasn’t a mistake to not get attacking reinforcements. It was a “gamble” according to the PR spin.
Like the punter in a Vegas casino, we lose.
Arteta was asked if it was a gamble and explicitly said it wasn’t. It was just the reality. They tried to find the right player. It didn’t work out. Some of our supporters really need to grow the fuck up with these tantrums whenever things don’t go exactly the way they want. They act like spoiled trust fund kids, stamping their feet and crying because daddy didn’t buy them the exact thing they wanted.
And kids like you believe every word that proceed out of ARTETA’s mouth
What lie do you think he told?
Well never mind it’s fa cup weekend time to put our eggs in that basket
………..wait…..what *SIGH* roll on Leicester!!!
Still ? I can look forward to that lot losing in another final for the 70th year !
I hope Liverpool destroy em
Ain’t lost to city Chelsea Liverpool for two seasons and keep losing to these filth. Need big upgrade in summer. Trossard and sadly martinelli need upgrading. Desperately need a centre forward too.
I really dislike Newcastle, their fans and that rat faced, inbred looking Gordon.
If this was us going full throttle, just end the season now.
Was that Saliba playing for us or Trevor Chalobah?
We’d all take Gordon though, atleast I would, rat face and all.
Appreciate it’s not the day for it, but I think Gordon is a brilliant player. Probably the best bit of scouting Newcastle have done since the takeover and if they tried to sell him again for PSR like last summer I’d hope we’re front of the queue
What scouting ., paid £40 million for him
Not such a bad time for Saliba to have his poorest game ever. Micky Mouse Cup win is completely forgotten 15 minutes after the game finishes.
I find it best not to think of them. Otherwise their stupid fans who created this faux rivalry get validation. Newcastle don’t bother me in the slightest. They are a non entity who sold their souls to the Saudi kingdom. Spurs of the north.
Don’t mind saying this.
If Tottenham get through against Liverpool tomorrow…
I hope a giant sinkhole swallows Wembley on cup final day.
22 stretchered off.
Nothing against the players on the pitch, not even the ones that made the mistakes. And don’t care for carabao cup but: 1. This is the worst way to do it – we absorbed all the minutes of this shit competition and yet didn’t even get a finals moment. We know how our squad was even before additional injuries – the prudent thing should have always been to play kids right through and maybe fresher first teamers might have got few more points in PL 2. Arteta has been so ruthless with players he’s brought in – Ramsdale, Zinchenko –… Read more »
We have not strengthened the team over the last two windows, it’s a miracle we are where we are
Martinelli getting injured literally 48 hours after the transfer window closed has got to be the most Arsenal thing ever
Hopefully not too bad and he has recovery time.
The boys were not good enough. Too shaky the whole game.
Let’s hope Gabi’s injury is a light one.
10 days rest and final run to end the year with at least one trophy.
GOYG
Tactically inept against a decent team playing a low block. Story of the season
Eddie Howe has our number 3 games and not a goal to show, but arsenal well below par tonight maybe after city game intensity lacking.
Lacked incision through the middle tbh. Sesko wishes he was that technical. At least Saka returns after another month.
Super duper Mikel won’t win you a team spoon.. believe you me
Think starting the same team was probably a mistake – especially in positions where we do have options (Calafiori, Merino, Nwaneri etc) but that’s all 20/20 hindsight. We’ve been done by some genuinely world class centre forward play (in both games!) that gave momentum to the kind of team it’s hard to snatch it back from. It’s not a disaster, it’s the carabao cup.
I hope the lads are on the plane to somewhere sunny in their comfiest pyjamas. See you all in 10 days.
I’m not in the mood to blame anyone or anything for this. Can we say for once that the opposition was just better?
We can but we can also say we are weak under pressure.
Well I think we can all agree that we were much worse than we played them at home
We ran out of legs. Too many players not at it today. Let Newc lose to Pool in the final. That will be far more heartbreaking for them that way. Let’s focus on the big trophies.
Agreed. 👍
I thought Arteta made a tactical mistake – he brought on Merino and Sterling for Ødegaard and Trossard but I would have brought on Merino and Sterling and not taken anyone off. An extra two men would have really helped us get more numbers in and around their box.
Could have started them.
Fuck ‘em.
Fuck the league cup, fuck the pundits and fuck Newcastle United.
Much as I dislike Liverpool, I hope they smash the scum 5 – 0 tomorrow night and then proceed to score double figures against Ant and Dec FC in the final.
Cunts, the lot of ‘em.
Your super duper Mikel can’t get it done over two leagues.. now you hope arne slot do it for you… Shameless fanbase
You stink like a urine stain in carpet
Sad to go out but I’m after the Premier League and Champions League.
Not going to lose sleep over the League cup
The problem is, we’re not in a position to turn down these opportunities, regardless of sleep deprivation.
lack of sleep increases blood pressure
On that thought, I should probably get to sleep myself.
Nope, not buying the media narrative of going five years without a trophy being a disaster when other teams have gone 30, or 70 years without one.
I would love a FA or League cup but winning one won’t define this team or Arteta (as you can see, he’s already won one and it doesn’t mean shit)
Winning a Premier League or Champions League is what will define this manager and this team. I will lose sleep over those two and only those two.
Spot on. Surprised we fielded as strong a team as we did. Sunday hangover.
Eddie Howe has Arteta’s number…but that shouldn’t mean we change the way we play! Only quitters have a plan B.
In that he’s won 4 from 10? That’s my kind of number in Arteta’s favour.
Oh dear! What can I say, who’s to blame ARTETA, HARVERTZ OR THE FANS ? We need to stay humble.. don’t have much to brag about
Fuck off Michael Oliver
Troll in the house.
Felt like if we didn’t get an early goal we were never going to win.. and we did the opposite haha. Oh well.. first leg performance lost it.
The team were brilliant on Sunday and tiredness probably played its part but all that talk and that’s the best we can do? Two things concern me here. 1) Mikel seems to routinely get outcoached by Eddie Howe nowadays (and Unai Emery). It’s very annoying. 2) We get within a a sniff of a trophy, make all the right noises and then womp womp womp. Do we have a mentality issue or does discussing this bring people too close to the dreading ‘B’ word. We certainly make it very easy for rival fans to mock us. I won’t expand on… Read more »
The players looked like they felt let down with the management not buying anyone this window
How on earth does someone ‘look’ like that?!
Yes
The Carabao Cup ladies and gentlemen.
£100k prize money wouldn’t pay Saka through to Wednesday of a given week.
Three defeats this season to Newcastle.
Urrrrggghhhh
Seems like a case of After the Lord Mayor’s Show. From following the Arsecast Live, it seems that we had nothing left in the tank after Sunday. A nice warm weather break might do the team (or at least, those still standing) a bit of good.
Disgusting Newcastle…………..but they fucking needed that more than us and it showed
Arsenal have played Newcastle United three times this season, lost all three games, outplayed in all three, conceded five goals in the process and scored NONE. Very bad.
Their striker makes our world class CB’s look shaky and our striker makes their solid CB’s look like prime Nesta & Maldini :\
How I wish I was as brave and shameless like some of our own fans here who keep saying the management are doing a good job.. this club is a joke.
Get a grip for pity’s sake. The club is not ‘a joke’. Childish hyperbole does no one any favours.
He’s not an arsenal fan clearly. See his other comments. Don’t give the troll oxygen.
step away from the ledge Omaha.
Just don’t all you people wishing for Liverpool to win in the finals – do you really want Liverpool to do a double in Slot’s first season and go from strength to strength? Who care if Newcastle go onto win – they’re not competing with us in the long run. They were better in every department – both games were fair. Just suck it up and take it on the chin.
As long as spuds don’t get it I don’t give a shit who gets it
I hate Newcastle
I hate ARTETA
You better have a look at what Arteta has done in the past 5 years. He has done a great job bringing us back to the point we are fighting for the league for the third consecutive year. I am absolutely disappointed we got no one and will most likely not win anything this year, again, but it’s not on Arteta.
Your a sad prick…
Trolling to get your shits and giggles.
What, got no friends in Newcastle, huh? Your pathetic and miserable and you know it.
How’s that going for ya?
Everything about them is vile.
Get a grip FFS.Its the Carabao cup!Couldnt give a monkeys who wins it.It was plain to see the lads were cream crackered & the barcodes were desperate.Move on.A nice 10 day winter break.Get the walkingvsounded back. And ready for the run in.
Well turns out i didn’t miss much while putting my mother into hospice…
We were 2 nill down from the first leg so not winning tonight wasn’t a shock … but seeing a tired team with only one attacking option from the bench in Ethan is very worrying … now we have lost our 1st choice wingers Saka and martinelli … we so badly needed reinforcements in January and the club not doing that will destroy the remainder of our season .. we will lose more of our starting eleven over the next 5 weeks … Arteta stating we have to dig deep is a cop out … we will struggle to have… Read more »
Lost the game that could be lost. Now let’s head to the warm weather break and return recharged to the real and significant battles: PL and UCL
