Wenger refuses to be drawn on contract issue

Arsene Wenger has refused to clarify his contract situation despite being asked about it at today’s press conference.

He admitted there was an offer from the club, but when it comes to signings and contracts, the manager was as tight-lipped as ever.

“I didn’t deny that,” he said when asked if a new contract was on the table. “I said many times I don’t think there is any need to come back on it. I answered that question already. I said what I said when I was asked this question at the start of the season. Nothing has changed.

“When you are manager at the club you have to prepare for the long-term always and act like you will stay forever. What is important now is our next game.”

Wenger’s contract runs until next summer and he spoke some weeks ago about how his future was tied in with the fortunes of the team.

“I said I want to focus on the quality of our season,” he said. “No-one can question my commitment to this club. I want to do well and the question of me staying will be secondary for that.

And at yesterday’s AGM, when introducing new Chairman Sir Chips Keswick, the Frenchman said, “I would also like to wish well to Mr Chips Keswick and I hope we will have a great time together in the coming months.”

There’s certainly something to be read into that if you really wanted. ‘I hope we will have a great time together in the coming months‘ is certainly more open to analysis than ‘I hope we will have a great time together in the future‘, for example.

Anyway, time will tell.

Way to set the example Arsene i’m sur

Dr Baptiste

Surely it shows that Wenger wants what’s best for this team and his players rather that just filling his own pockets

That’s what I’ve always gleaned from Wenger’s comments about his contract before, I imagine he had more than a smidgen of self-doubt when things were hard and might have considered that he couldn’t do any more for us, the frustration was there for all to see and the Great Culling of 2013 shows he knows there were a few mistakes there when trying to cover up the problems with cheap punts (cheapish anyway, wasn’t Gervinho 12m or something?).

Maximus

Gervinho was 8 million actually, the British media are just shit and give the wrong figures all the time. I’m not sure what price we sold him for, but I don’t think the losses were really all that bad considering.

jack jack jack

According to transfermarkt.co.uk (no idea how credible their data is) he was bought for around £10m and sold for around £7m. I don’t think there’s any shame in that, especially if you look at what he’s doing for Roma this season. Arsene took a punt on him, it didn’t work out, we move on. We all know about the long list of punts that worked out pretty fucking well indeed.

Way to set the example Arsene i’m sure the next time Cazorla wants to extend he will take us all for a ride make us shit bricks for a while then sign it eventually coz you know he learned from the best.

Sign!

Thisisme

Despite what he says I think failure would see him more likely to stay on than success. If we won the league/CL I think he would consider that job done.

Ozil could turn out to be Wenger’s leaving present to himself in much the same way RVP was for Fergie.

Harsh

ozil himself said his primary reason for coming here was arsene… and arsene leaving when contract runs out, would almost be like cheating on ozil, and somehow arsene doesn’t seem like someone do to such a thing just as a “parting gift”…

The fool of a Took

AW was appointed when I was 10 and now as a 27 year old, I know not of a world without him, nor would I like to.
They grey mist of the forgotten future clouds my eyes as I see Ancelotti (or some other cunt) picking up the reins left by the professor himself.

Hopefully he wins the triple and in a epic ceremony he gives the rein over to the cloaked heroes, Henry and Bergkamp.

Nevermind above ramblings, what I mean was that the only people I could accept as managers are an epic team of Dennis and Thierry.

That’s it, get Allardyce on the phone.

The home fans sing Arsene’s name and chant, “Sign the thing”. One Arsene. I believe Wenger would resign at the end of this season, after we have won the Quadriple 😉

Arsene, Arsene, Arsene, Arsene, Sign da ting, sing da ting. It’s got I certain ring to it! Seriously though I really hope he signs. I can’t even imagine anyone else. Like the guy above I was 10 years when he got here and I’m not shitting you I’m gonna cry like a little baby and probably get some sort of identity crisis when he leaves/retires. I’m not gonna toot(?) my own horn but I’ve never wanted Arsene out during my time as a gunner (which is as long back as I can remember). I love everything about the man and… Read more »

I gotta be honest here. Remember back in 2008-2010 Almunia and Fabianski were single handed destroying our games but Arsene REFUSED to bring in a goalie? I genuinely wanted him out. But it was a matter of who is gonna replace him. However, he’s a tactical genius and now that he has let go of his annoyingly stubbornness to open the check book, I’m sure the mixture of quality and tactical masterclass will take us to great heights! Come on Arsene and COYG

Pete

They weren’t really that bad and he knew he had something worth persevering with in Szczesny.

jack jack jack

I want to thumb you up for recognising Arsene’s tactical nous, but thumb you down profusely for doing the tabloid “Arsene is annoying and stubborn” spiel. Who’d have thought the choice of a thumb up or a thumb down wouldn’t be intellectually fulfilling?

BigArseneFan

Wenger finding it hard to decide to sign the contract?? he does weigh all the options before he commits himself because he is as loyal a man as you can get!! I just hope he gives it a one last go , one last splurge of adrenaline to take arsenal to the heights he has always visioned. I just hope he stays forever and ever. He cant leave it now and let theother manager take all the credit for all his hardwork!!
Sign da ting!! Plzz

Adam Richards

I’m positive he will sign when the time is right; who would not want to manage this club right now? He’s gone through 6+ years of recession at Arsenal and now suddenly he’s been given the purse strings to do whatever he likes with them; why would he go?

I can’t think of a single manager who would serve the club better or a better club to go to (although I might be slightly biased on this point)

ChrisM

“So Arsene, it’s almost the end of the season, are you ready to sign the contract?”

“Whatever happens, I will always be a gooner”

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

Dinty

We need him for the next few seasons now that we have just turned the corner, not ready for life without Wenger just yet.

“No-one can question my commitment to this club.” <— that's the fucking truth

What a pity that there are idiots following the Arsenal who did question it. They're quieter than silent Stan right now, though. When the chips were down AW was somebody who clearly felt every goal against, every defeat, every player sale, just as painfully as any of us, more so. Given it's impossible to split Arsenal from what Herbert Chapman achieved at the club, so it is and will be with AW. Absolute fucking legend, long may he stay on and enjoy some well earned silverware.

Fuck I love saying that over and over again, I need help.

ramses

Maybe he’s planning to win the UCL this season to complete his CV and then leave? I HOPE NOT. he fought thru the thin, he needs to stay and enjoy the THICK part!

Zelalem#58

well, the good thing is: you cannot plan to win the UCL!

mike

If Arsene leaves during the summer, were gunna be seriously weakened

kkc

Maybe he wants to use it as another motivation for the team by saying his future will depend on how well we do this season.

Or maybe he really wants to go PSG.

or maybe not. God!!!

Goonerestgooner

I’m sure he will sign no matter what. I think when he says “in the coming months” he’s just confident we’re gonna win at least one trophy this season, which of course would be enjoyable for everyone.

The Artist formerly known as DangerMouse

There are really no words that can adequately express appreciation for what this man has done. The football, the stadium, the philosophy ,the intelligence. A genius at work. Whether he stays one more year or ten more( i hope its the latter) we should all just sit back and enjoy whatever is left of this unique wonderful ride he’s given us. At this stage he owes us nothing. He’s given us his all for seventeen years.

Fatgooner

Wenger’s going to PSG next summer.

masterofthegoonaverse

Oh fuck off you!

santori

After finally getting to see some promise of dividends with signing Ozil, Ramsey coming good, Gibbs, Per, Koscielny etc do you really think between your thick head case that Wenger would go to PSG and discount all that he just said about ethos, development, etc? Right. Wenger will sign a new contract. He is good for another 3-5 seasons. Probably likely the club will offer him 3 seasons plus 2 on option if he hits some performance goals. He is a control freak and will likely want to dictate who will succeed him. This period will give him the chance… Read more »

I think everyone needs to realize that Dennis would not be a wise choice for manager. I mean I would absolutely love it and I think he could do a good job, but I think his fear of flying is nearly insurmountable in terms of challenges.

masterofthegoonaverse

Why? Might be a couple of UCL games he couldn’t get to, no more.

Dial square

Who could blame Arsene if he walked away? All the shit he got last year from some so called fans, where are the ‘Wenger out’ brigade now?…..wankers!!!
