Hodgson: Wilshere knock not related to old ankle injury

Roy Hodgson has revealed that Jack Wilshere’s current ankle problem has nothing to do with the injury which has troubled him for the best part of the last two years and confirmed the midfielder will join up with England if he features for Arsenal at Manchester United on Sunday.

Earlier this week Arsene Wenger confirmed he still harbours hopes Wilshere will recover in time for the trip to Old Trafford but hinted the 21-year-old will withdraw from international duty if he doesn’t take part. England play friendlies against Chile and Germany at Wembley as they prepare for next summer’s World Cup.

Speaking at a press conference today, Hodgson relayed that he was in constant dialogue with the Arsenal medical team about Jack’s fitness.

“Gary Lewin and Ian Beasley are always talking to Arsenal’s medical staff. At the moment we know what the situation is with Jack and we know he’s in a period where his ankle is constantly being assessed.

“I’ve left a message with Arsene and spoken to Arsene via the doctors; the way I see it we’re going to monitor the situation on a daily basis. With any luck he’ll be fit at the weekend and he’ll play in the game [against United] and there’ll be nothing further to discuss.

“If that wasn’t the case then I think it would be a question on a day-to-day basis about how much better now is the ankle. From what I understand it’s nothing to do with his previous ankle problems, this was a kick on the ankle which has caused it to swell up and the inflammation needs to die down.

“With Jack it’s a case of our medical staff and Arsene and I constantly discussing it. Arsene, as far as I can make out is not averse to him playing in at least one of the [England] games, it’s just whether he’s fit enough to play in them or not.”

He does know how to warble on does ol’ Roy. In fairness a bit of game time probably wouldn’t be a bad thing for Jack if he’s up to it. If there’s any doubt though you suspect for the long-term it’s better that both parties take no risks.

How about letting the lad rest and get over any niggling injuries, instead of playing him in meaningless shitey friendlies.

Silent Symphony.

Normally I’d agree, but if he’s fit to get minutes on Sunday an hour against Germany on the 19th could work to our advantage. The game should suit him and might kick-start form.

GunnAlex

The constant back and fore with the club to see how he is. Why bother! If he’s fit he’s fit. Great, then play him (begrudgingly). S’only a bloody friendly. Should use those to test out all the other young up and coming darlings the media like to wank over.

theo's speed

since when did Roy become our spokesman ?

berlingoon

since he spoke to Arsène via doctors 😀

Jack needs to be 100% as his role on field is much attacking, theo ox gibbs

Hodgson is a twat. It’s not him who should decide whether Jack should play or not, Jack’s not his property ffs.

I completely agree with leaving Wilshere out of the England squad if he’s not fit…

However, unfortunately these friendlies are a bit more important than others (for England that is) because if they win and get the necessary FIFA ranking points to make at least 7th place in the world ranking, then they will be seeded in the world cup.

I miss Bergkamp

Unfortunately England is already out of the top pot. The seeds were set from the October rankings. http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/news/newsid=2197884/
So I hope to see them get a run out if healthy to help them build up their fitness, but otherwise sitting at home.

I stand corrected. thanks for the link.

England international team is probably the most desperate team in the world!

Now you're going to believe us

Jack Charlton and Andy Townsend might have something to say about that

Clockendrider

“Is he fit?”
“Well he can walk.”
“If he can walk he can play. By the way, if he gets injured, it’s nothing to do with us.”
genius.
This is how I know we have never put a man on the moon.

Isn’t there supposed to be an “@” somewhere in an e-mail address?

Goon Goon Goon

You can understand Roy wanting the best players at his disposal but he’s had this with Arsene before. If he’s fit I’m sure he’ll play against Germany but I wouldn’t even risk him against Chile otherwise.

Highberry

I bloody hate these pointless matches I’d like Arsene to tell ALL the international teams to go piss up a rope and fly the yellow jack from the Emirates then everybody could rest and recuperate for the dark winter months of crowded schedules, referees who’ve been let out of St. Dunstans for the day and scabby whinging commentators

LANS

international football
what a waste of time really

Wilko

Can’t Wilshere just join up for the run around, fitness, training and tactical briefings? Hes got to be dead-cert for the World Cup, he may as well spend time training with the squad and working with Woy (who I don’t believe to be a twat).

Wilko

Apologies, I just read that he’s got the call up anyway. Hopefully Woy will act with professionalism.
