Per Mertesacker says his row, following the Man City game, with Mesut Ozil is a healthy thing for the team.
In an interview with Bild (via @m_christenson, the defender said, “It can’t just be all happiness, peace and pancakes. If it is then you won’t develop as a team.
“The good thing is that Mesut and I know each other well from our time at Bremen. We can be honest with each other.”
People tend to get too hung up on things like this anyway. Players don’t have to be best friends to be effective on a football pitch.
Famously, Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham hated each other when playing for Manchester United, while Nelson Vivas and Igors Stepanovs refused to speak a word to each other after the Argentine cheated in a game of Battleships on the bus to an away game.

He bloody should be. Our best football came with Mertesacker as captain and Flamini bollocking people in the middle. The other lads were too sodding scared of those two to do owt wrong.

If the Cole -Sheringham rift had affected the United team they would have both felt the dual wrath of Alex Ferguson & Roy Keane.
It was also over something stupid. Apparently Cole came on as a sub for Sheringham for the former’s England debut and took offence when the Teddy didn’t shake his hand and wish him luck. I would have thought it would have been easier to take him aside and say ‘ you really p’d me off etc…’
As for Per being captain, he’s going to be our best leader since Vieira and Adams.
