Wilshere hails ‘massive three points’

Jack Wilshere praised Arsenal’s defenders for holding out against Aston Villa and admitted he’s been working to improve his contribution in the final third having scored and assisted Olivier Giroud in a Man of the Match performance.

The England international calmly slotted home Arsenal’s opener after collecting Nacho Monreal’s pass and then dinked a great pass to Giroud who netted just 17 seconds after the resulting kick-off.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Wilshere reflected: “It’s a massive three points. In the second half when Villa came out we dropped, but we dealt with it well.

“I’m not really a defensive midfielder I’m an attacking midfielder. I need to create and score goals. You look at your [Frank] Lampards and [Steven] Gerrards and I know I have to improve in these areas.

“I spoke to the manager a few times [about my position], it’s important that we rotate and I know sometimes I’m going to play central and sometimes out wide, but it’s the three points that matter.”

Reflecting on the manner in which Arsenal were forced to sit back and defend their lead following Benteke’s late reply, Wilshere heaped praise on defensive duo Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

“In the past when that has happened [conceding late] we’ve looked nervous but with Per and Laurent we were able to cope with Benteke.

“We take each game as it comes, it’s important that we take our rest and then go again next weekend [against] Fulham.”

Shout out to Rosicky for playing through that broken nose

Heroldgoon

Who told you it was a broken nose?

if it was the medic would surely have advised against continuing.

Another interesting thing is Ox ahead of Poldi. what is going on between Poldi and wenger?

Balotellitubbies

having broke my nose before i am quite confident it was broke

Heroldgoon

I had initially thought you were the medic but that clarifies it. thanks.

Don’t need to do 7 years at medical school to diagnose that lol

Heroldgoon

Whoa that’s sore…..but wait isn’t that rosickys normal twisted nose?

Wenger: “rosicky had a bad nose”

dink arnold

Just digging holes hey Heroldgoon?

Heroldgoon

Yeah seems so dick.

people underestimate broken noses and if rosickys was indeed that then the medic needs a kick up the arse. letting him continue was dangerous!

Toure Motors

Great to see him back to his best. Another well deserved MOTM.

Heroldgoon

He was brilliant i must say. His sudden change of pace and turning are his strengths and today he almost arsenal vs barca-esque. i like that he wants to score more goals too its been the only missing thing about him.

matt

top of the table!

the only sam is nelson

we’re piling up a lot of points that in previous years we’d have let go through panic and sloppiness

keep that up and we’ll be there at the final reckoning, hopefully winning the title

lovely

skansen

Yes, it kind of helps to have the best center half pairing in the league. 28 games Kos+Mert played together for the full 90 mins (12/13 & 13/14): W 20, D 8, L 0. As much as I love the aggressive, forward thinking approach to the game, I feel the tipping point of us winning the league or not this season will be the defensive work from front to back – the defensive discipline throughout the team. Luckily they all seem a lot more focused and determined not to fuck things up and not make silly mistakes in the middle… Read more »

Steve

So it was a definite broken nose – poor rosicky, hope he gets better soon

ghanagunner

Man! i love the reaction of the Big Germany when they scored. I am sure Carzola feared for his life at that moment

dink arnold

The Big Germany, I almost like it more than BFG

ghanagunner

funny eh? but honestly speaking, it was a typo

Binda

CAZORLA not CARzola

dink arnold

That was a typo too

ZDR

Big Germany, fucking brilliant

Young Gooner

A bit sloppy second, I almost fell asleep until the Benteke’s goal. Maybe its not the game that makes me sleepy. The game started at 4 in the morning in Malaysia. Now I can go to sleep smiling

zliwy

Ha ha..same here. No kidding to wake up at 4am in the morning but with Arsenal winning the game it was all worth it.

COYG!

SingaporeGooner

I was nervously squatting on my sofa after Benteke scored. Lost count of how many times I went absolutely mental every time we misplaced a pass. I think there’s a tear on the sofa now and my mom’s gonna be pissed but who care! WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

maaaah

Wilshere`s best game of the season so far, normally hate when he tries to dribble into players but today his decision making was spot on dribbled when he could passed when he could`nt even though he still stays on the floor far too long after he gets fouled but then again teams do target him …

dink arnold

I’m glad you specified that it’s [Frank] Lampard and [Steven] Gerrard, that’s funny as hell. I damn well hope there younger Arsenal fans who don’t know who they are!

Mayor of The Woolwich

Bring on Fulham…another certain Three points, methinks**

Glasgow Gunner

Jack played well. The 2nd half was much more tense than it should have been. Brilliant win none the less.

Shaun Edwards

Brilliant performance. A bit sweaty at the end but defending superbly throughout. In control of game and comfortable. Come on you Gunners.

Petit's Handbag

We’re playing Fulham Saturday….can we please please just have a cosy 4-0 win?
Fucking heart attack Arsenal

Heroldgoon

Think we need to be scoring more goals. If and when the prem title comes to the wire we will not even have a look in. citeh is miles ahead.

Need a 23 – 0 vs fulham on saturday.

ZDR

City will easily have the highest goal difference in the league. Thus, we need to focus on having the most points.

Flamini's Boots

The tackle Flamini made in the 26th minute in the middle of the pitch, when he anticipated we would lose the ball and made that tackle from behind to win it back….oh my gawd….

2013-2014 = 2003-2004

The Flaminator!

Merlin's Panini

Well we don’t half make it hard for ourselves sometimes eh?
We really need to learn to finish the job before it can get tight. We were great in the first half but totally eased off after that. Still waiting for a really big win this season. I thought this was going to be it. It’s a nice frustration to have in a way as long as you’re top of the league!

Die Hard Gunner

Only one team with the right”Mental Strength”can go ahead and win this match; ARSENAL

Swashbuckling Swarbrick

I am sorry. All I saw was an elbow with pace hit Rosicky in the nostrils. I didn’t feel it was enough to blow on my whistle. I’m an absolute cunt.

dink arnold

The foul should have been called, definitely. But afterwards with Rosicky down and injured, we kept attacking. We then lost possession and Everyone got mad at the ref and Villa for playing on. If we wanted to stop play for our injured player, we shoulda done it ourselves

Observant Gooner

Benedink Arnold thank you, we all know what happened. Seems like the post was about Swarbrick not giving a foul there, when it was a certain foul and at least a caution.

dink arnold

I’m rotted for Monreal, one of my favourite players this year. Okay, they’re all my favourite players, but often I prefer Monreal to Gibbs even.

Hopefully it doesn’t hit him too hard. He still had a chance of going to Brazil too

percyofgod

Saw the old Jack today. Bless you son!!!

Rambö

Wilshere did very well today, same goes for Giroud, especially the handling of Wilshere’s assisting pass, which looked properly smooth. And a huge shout out to Rosicky, playing with what seemed like a broken nose. Proper soldier, that lad!

Inside the Changing Room

BFG goes up to Santi, hugs him, says he’s sorry for screaming at him on the pitch. Then he informs him he will fucking kill him if he ever does that again. Santi kisses his hand and scampers away

Eric Irish gunner

Get performance again, ashame no clean sheet but it’s t 3 points and back on top, another 3 points the weekend

DaMwiinger

Reading some of the comments, you’d think we lost. Come on people, we won and are back on top of the league. Citeh with all their filthy money lost at Villa Park and needed the ref’s help to win at St. James (or whatever they call that place now). Just enjoy the moment

dink arnold

Well, the comments on this blog after this post are mostly, if not all positive. But agreed that on twitter they were more negative

goonytunes

Why have we not signed a striker yet? Does Arsene not know that El Hadjj Diouf is angling for a move from Elland Road?!

In all seriousness, quality performance from Ol’ Jacky Boy a a typically heroic performance from BFG

Trask

@merlin’s panini spot on! Just finish the bloody game off! Too many games this season we score two and then just sit back, after scoring those goals today we were really poor because we could have destroyed them but decided to showboat instead of being incisive. Granted there are games when you score and then you defend but this shouldn’t have been one of ’em! Just needlessly made life difficult for ourselves. AW didn’t look too pleased at full time!

Canadian Gooner

Great three points but we made it harder than it needed to be. We should’ve tried to scored another goal instead of sitting deep at the back . But still I’m really glad we left with all the points and returned to the top! COYG

Virginia Goon

Rosicky with the tucked in undershirt. Call me old school, but that my boys is how you do it. Jack once again proving why we all adore his style of play. Great win, great three points, on to the next one. COYG.

ngash kenyan

TRUE solders : rosicky ,per, laurent, jackboy, ozil,……… cazorla need 2 pull up his whatever. Can someone tel mi want was wilshire meaning with the sign he made after scoring

Arsepedant

It was “A” for his son Archie, I believe.

tilldeathdouspart

Apologies-You may be right.Your reply wasn’t there when I posted mine.

tilldeathdouspart

Think he’s making a capital A (for Arsenal obviously).
I kinda like it.
With Monkeyboy and his daft homage to a dumb shape (hearts DON’T look like that!) off the block the floor is open for hand gesture celebrations and I’m happy with this one.
For anyone who thinks it’s a shit celebration just consider- Robbie Keane…..

pearson

Wasn’t it a mirror image, upended, reversed minaturised, slightly modified, inverted nazi salute?

All hand gestures are liable to be tagged as nazi these days, be careful Jackie Boy.

Arseblood

Hopefully…(at age 29 and being a full Spanish international with many caps) Santi Cazorla has learnt a fucking lesson tonight!! And maybe I won’t have a complete breakdown every time I watch us play!! Fuck sake….

AlaminIImam

Good to see that flashes of the past from J10..You are just so close to being back at your best. Thanks for your Goal!

Dan D

Ultimately a good win in difficult circumstances because the pressure was on tonight after the results this weekend. Frustrating 2nd half display however, can’t understand why we came out after the break and basically did nothing, until of course they scored. But like I said, always harder winning games when you know you have to but to make things more comfortable need to see more energy and a ruthless kill the game off mentality plus improvement from Ozil and Cazorla. On their day they are our match winners but Cazorla has been giving the ball away far too much for… Read more »
