Sp*rs 0-1 Arsenal: player ratings

So the scum went down 1-0 to a Tomas Rosicky rocket and a central defensive masterclass. How did the players rate?

We thought a bit like this: and don’t forget you can add your own ratings and comments.

we followed a pragmatic approach after out midweek away trip to munich. Paul merson was way too negative on sky sports post match analysis. sick of pro anfield media band wagon. Don’t know if our fellow gooner, tactics Tim is happy or sad at Arsenal’s win?
COYG

loose_cannon

If it was Chelsea they’d be ranting about a “Mourinho performance” and champions win playing ugly blah blah. We contained them and won, missing Walcott Ozil Ramsey too; since when was that not enough?

Dick Law

exactly my point…seems like everyone wants us to capitulate against wigan. media knows that rubbing salt on our wounds helps their sales. its our responsibility to not fall for the bait and support our team through ups and downs.

Matthew

The media asked Brendan Rodgers after Liverpool’s win if he thought the title race was now a three-horse race between “Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool”…
I mean, surely he must have some sort of bias against Arsenal. I really don’t think we get the respect we deserve, as both a side capable of winning the league and as a club who has always been respectfully and professionally run.
Anyway, it’ll be good to prove the media wrong so here’s hoping we do that.

Andrew

“Arsenal can’t win ugly.”

Arsenal win 1-0 away.

“They’ll never win the league playing like that.”

OOzil

i dont mind people complaining and bitching about the way we won the game.. we won the game!! screw you!

killthecockerel

Once Rosicky had scored early on, we did not need to get out of reverse gear against a team with no flair or scoring ability. We have two games against REAL rivals soon, so conserving energy was necessary, and as I say, playing in reverse gear is energy conservation.

TURF

i choose not to listern to the idiots on sky sports all i want to see is their faces when we lift the trophy at the end of the season. Yesterday’s game was a classic case of us winning ugly and i bet that’s what the title winning sides of the previous years mustered.

Ours was a defensive masterclass, i don’t remember the last time i saw that many blocked shots from an Arsenal team.

One – nil to the motherfucking Arsenal!

Sagna’s reaction to Sherwood’s double ball throw, just epitomises the difference in class between the two clubs.

What a rocket!

Bonus rating: Soldaldo- £26m of pure horse shit/10

Rocky Rocastle

To be fair he have been one of the better strikers in Europe the last 3 Seasons with 25, 27 and 30 goals a season,. But ye, he, he has been pretty crap for spurs, and may it long continue 😛

TommyGun

i prefer that he turned shit a tottenham

Attasmani

I guess £26m of pure horse shit could at least be used as fertilizer, so it’s 1-0 to £26m of pure horse shit vs soldado..

mik

actually, their turf on the sidelines and corners looked like could use some fertilizer. maybe they could chop Soldado into little pieces and scatter him around the pitch.

Maniac

Gibbs seemed a bit out of his depth today, but otherwise the team put in a hell of a defensive performance. As usual the Koscielny-Mertesacker pairing was absolutely Per-fect.

Daft Aider

Not out of his depth just out of sorts after an injury

Swede Goon

I notice that Szczsney seems to enjoy beating Spurs more than anybody, and Rosicky seems to like scoring against them! A good game.

Macduff

WTF was he doing with his phone on the pitch

AllGunsABlazin

Texting the babes during opposition goal kicks and such, it’s a full time job being such a player 😉

Bould's Eyeliner

I think you’re confusing him with a certain Dane. He was obviously looking up some cuntspurs songs to practice on the piano tonight.

D

Blogs too many Selfie Shezzas on the pitch!

Gunneryellow

Giroud is a good striker, but we need a striker who can create something out of nothing when it matters.

Some say that Giroud did not get support from the midfield, but a top striker should not be sorely reliant on others to have an impact.

Deserve to be at Arsenal, but not as a first choice striker.

Swede Goon

Good point, Gunneryellow, although I think the 4 rating from some fans is little harsh, he did not have an especially great game, but he is not a guy to dribble past opponents, beat players or work the channel, he is rather a static poacher who is good with combination play (although he was not very good at this today). He is not likely to slalom past defenders and finish, much like Mario Gomez, although Giroud is better at linking up with the midfield. I agree we need a new striker, but not so much to replace Giroud, just to… Read more »

Az Ahmed

I don’t understand why so many fans stick up for Giroud so much, making excuses as Swede Goon has made, saying Giroud is a certain type of player so we should not be looking for him to do something special. Okay, that is fine, but in that case he is NOT Arsenal quality because we are a world class club and we need to start acting like it and start demanding it from everybody. I think 9 years without a trophy has started to take its toll on fans and made us accept 4th spot as our place of rest.… Read more »

Swede Goon

Calm down, man, I am NOT manking excuses; I often harshly critisize Giroud, but this was not a game to make the final judgement on his quality, a cagey, flat game that had little chances from Podolski or anybody else. Giroud is NOT the best striker in the leauge by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s the only striker we really have besides the raw Sanogo, and sticking behind him and supporting seemed to bring him to a new level this season. We are an excellent club, but demanding that we are world class and have the money to… Read more »

Az Ahmed

No worries, nothing personal, but we are past the ‘building’ phase. It is time to turn it into real currency, and that means trophies, real title challenges, not fading away into obscurity come February/March. I hope I eat my words and we go on a title winning run, but I don’t see it happening with all honesty. Liverpool are stronger than us up front, sorry but its true. If it doesn’t happen, we all know it is because of a lack of cover in January and 2 or 3 signings short in the summer, including a world class striker. The… Read more »

Swede Goon

Thanks, one thing we can certainly agree on is that that was three good points!

ChilliPalmer

Surely this isn`t a game of Football Manager 2014. Surely every year is a “building” year, no? I mean, that’s why Fergie was such a good manager: he was awesome at rebuilding every year, turning teams around within a short time period. Arsene does not strike me as “very fast” in that respect, but we are all humans. Surely it is not just about stats, performance, goals, trophies, monies. People tend to forget that the whole team is human. Just imagine yourselfes doing something week in, week out, sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it, sometimes its a good… Read more »

loose_cannon

It’s not that he didn’t get support, it’s just that he’s hard to feed when he doesn’t have any pace and gets outmuscled by defenders. Yes we could have got closer to him but he should have stretched the game more as well and made life more awkward for the centre backs. When Adebayor is outdoing you for work ethic, you have to have a look at yourself.

Bould's Eyeliner

It’s so much easier for Giroud when Walcott, Ramsey, Cazorla, Wilshere, etc. were making space for him on both flanks. Same for Ozil. Now we have slowly lost each player except for Cazorla who will probably play central more often for now. We said that was the reason Ozil was not doing so well atm. Giroud is constantly 1 v 2-5 in the opposition final third. The main problem I think is that he can’t quite put himself about, without getting fouls called on him, and he gets fouled a lot but doesn’t get those calls for him going. He… Read more »

Two szczesnys?

heroldgoon

In all honesty after the 2 almost costly errors he made….I too thought there was 2 Szczesnys. the frazier campbell goal saving one and that one.

Anonymous

Our team are so much sexier than Spurs.

KBizzle

Not quite constructive discussion, but you seem to have Sagna on the left and Gibbo on the right

Maniac

Anyone else seeing Szczesny in Mertesacker’s position at CB?

Me So Hornsey

As for the sky punditry, I had to go up in the attic to dig out my old box of Panini stickers to check who Paul (I’m not bitter) Merson used to play for. Turns out it was actually us and not Spu*s. Who’d have thought?

Up4grabs

same with Ian Wright, seriously what did we do too our player’s

Poldi should get a better rating, for joining the fans in celebration at The Lane. Such a lad!

That’s not a selfie, just saying. But, still very funny hahaha!

Arteta's hair

By the way, i really hoped we would make it 2-0, so the scorer could make the Theo-gesture. That could have been so awesome. It is even his birthday today.

ArseRob

Massive three points, led by the best center-half pairing in the league. A disciplined, professional effort, influenced heavily by the early wonder-strike by Little Mozart. The post-match scenes celebrating with the supporters, which were wonderful and endearing, showed how much this meant. Will need to introduce a bit more pace and drive to take 6 points over the next two weeks, but for now just reveling in this outcome and the earnestness of the effort. The double is still very much on; COYG!

Aks Arsenal

Instead of Giroud if we would have got Costa, Ibrahimovich, Negredo etc. we could have been at the top. Striker i a must buy in summer.
Lets celebrate this great defensive win and roll on to Chelshit next week.
I want The Arsenal to win against Cheshit anyhow.
COYG..!!!
FOYS..!!

Swede Goon

Ibrahimovic would not move to Arsenal at 32 and we would not afford his wages, Negredo is only slightly better than Giroud and DIego Costa is a highly talented, athletic, diving, winding up, cheating bastard who would cost 30 million. When I pay 30 million, I like to have a guy that doesn’t spit on people and stuff.

Az Ahmed

Rubbish!! Negredo is much better than Giroud. As for Diego Costa, I can only dream!

Swede Goon

I disagree, but I guess that’s what this part of the page is for!

Ox15

Very biased, but was Poldi better than Oxlade? Ox was a bit wasteful and could have done better with the chances, but its a good sign that hes getting in those situations and made a couple good runs. Dont fault him for his finishing when he did a lot to get to the point to fluff up the finish

Mate Kiddleton

Yeah Ox was a constant threat with his directness. The composure will come with age, just look at Theo!

Mpls

Better? Not sure. different. Ox was doing a working mans job in the middle of the pitch. But great to see Poldi working to get in behind their lines, effectively on a few occasions. Should’ve pretended Lloris was Neuer though and ripped it at his head.

Ebouefan

Possibly Giroud’s worst game for us. Thought he was going to have a strong finish after Everton. Very disappointing.

TheRainKing

He won us a lot of FK’s at the end. Bout the only thing he did though..

Mpls

Those calls should’ve been coming his way a lot earlier, to be fair.

timi

Should have come his way earlier, yes. But because he never puts his body about, seriously challenging full-force and he’s always looking for a foul, it puts the ref and linesmen off. Who’s more likely to win fouls, the guy who complains about pretty much every duel he has, or the guy who goes in to those duels hard, gets up and plays… I know which one I’d be more likely to give fouls. Giroud just needs to apply himself 100% in challenges instead of looking for the foul so often. But maybe it’s the gameplan? I guess we’ll never… Read more »

Neddy Boo Boo

I’ve seen many comments in recent weeks suggesting Giroud should stop complaining about fouls against him and just get on with it and go in to “duels hard”. i think these people are missing the point that if he does do that, and gets injured or red carded, we’re really really light in the striker position…

Mpls

Hmm. The game I was watching had quite a lot of calls Against Giroud in those aerial duels and bodying up to win the ball.

And I’m not quite sure how you ‘go in hard’ when you play with back to goal, the defender is behind you and your primary purpose is to pull the ball down under control and bring bring your teammates into play.

Not at all saying he had a great game. Am saying some things (calls) did not go his way for much of the game.

Mate Kiddleton

Rosicky, outrunning and shrugging off players half his age… gotta love it

TheRainKing

3 wins against spurs and no goals conceded, cant’ ask for more than that.

I don’t think Chelsea will be as useless as Spurs so we will need to be better next week.

Dinho

I love the smell of schadenfreude in the morning. All the talk of our decline and Spurs’ inevitable parade to North London supremacy seems so comical now. I have the most satisfying smug smirk on my face.

Paul McOzil

St Totteringham’s Day will come early this year!!!

wengerbot

that remark by AVB about us being in an uncontrollable spiral seem all the more sweeter, would love it if it were played on the big screen at the Emirates in our next home game against the spuds just after szczesny gets his hatrick from a corner.

GuyFawkes

Rosicky can officially be known as the Spud feckn’ Buster

Clock End Mike

Per Koscielny, Laurent Mertesacker, and 2 Wojciech Szczesnys? What’s happening?

Clock End Mike

OK I see you fixed the latter, and I think I see what you’re doing with the others. 🙂

heroldgoon

Its nog really hard to see how sp*rs conceded 6 against city, 4 against chelsea and 5 against Liverpool. with abit more quality and coordination upfront and this would have been an equally cricket score match for us. at timesa all it took was one pass and there you had Kaboul browning his whites. SAS and City did it effectively and we could too and thats where our lack of offensive quality is thoroughly exposed. not just giroud but poldi and santi aswell. short of pace, short of that bit extra quality on the ball. its no wonder we are… Read more »

Albanian Gunner

We should have run more in space behind them, had we done that we would have scored more goals. Cant wait for Ramsey to come back will give some pace.

Arsepedant

Add Walcott, Ramsey, Ozil, and Wilshere, and you’d have had your four or five.

Dick Swiveller

I have to say, those are two of the things I wouldn’t pull those players up on, aside from Giroud, those two are both quick AND have good technique; the reason we didn’t score that many goals was due to profligacy and a contentment to sit back knowing that Spurs couldn’t create their way out of a paper bag. Now, if you were to say they lacked height, a bit of physicality and Poldi isn’t as fit as everyone else in the team then I could be on board but those criticisms are a little…weird. Give us a rest and… Read more »

Shrewd thinking. we will see vs Chelsea

Goonerestgooner

My brother in law (sp*rs fan) has just said “that’s it now, sp*rs will be dominate over Arsenal for the next ten years!”
I “gently” reminded him he, and most sp*rs fans, have been saying that since about ’61 (never again!)

bobyrose

Yes, Vermalen headed clear in our half.

Salty

Ox only rated a 5.5? Are you mental? He drives at players and makes them nervous. He clearly hard a massive part in the thunder bolt of a goal, and he was unlucky not to be on the score sheet himself.

Mpls

Poldi was the unlucky one not to be on the scoresheet because of Ox’s fluffed shot that should have been a pass for a tap-in. That said, he worked hard in the middle.

ron1niro

I wouldn’t want to be in giroud’s situation right now. The fans blame him for everything that is wrong with the team. Daniel Sturridge has 18 goals right now, welbeck has 9. Would rather have either of those than Giroud? Sturridge is shifty striker whose team just happens to create so many chances for. That is the exact opposite of arsenal. Giroud is expected to create chances for his teammates even though he is a striker. Arsenal’s style of play does not resonate around individuals but rather, the team. So many players after coming to arsenal let go of their… Read more »

Giroud is good at what he does, but being a fast attacking team like we are, i Personally dont think we need slow holding up the ball strikers. Especially not when as you say we dont Even cross that much, then the point of a big strong target man is kind of lost on me. We ought to be attacking like Liverpool Imo with clinical passers like Ozil, Rosicky and Cazorla in our team. ImagIne having a similar striker to Henry infront of our midfield, it would be total mayhem. And about Giroud creating chances, he has created 28 this… Read more »

99problems but being a GOONER aint one

That is the paradox in Giroud. I personally love his work rate and what he contributes to the team, what everyone is finally realising is that we need a striker with pace. This would give us the option of playing and attacking in a variety of ways and also give Giroud actual rest. He cannot stretch teams so teams can play high against us which closes the space for our midfielders and gives them nothing to hit going forward. Which is even more noticeable when we don’t have pace wide through Walcott or The ox when he has to play… Read more »

Black Hei

I don’t think Wenger has forgotten anything. Apparently since he got Rambo and Theo on board and stuck with them, while the “xperts” wanted them flunked out of the Arsenal academy early.

kafka

All those who have mentioned the injured players are on the cusp of the insight that Giroud works in this team when he has the pace around him, both to lay off for runs (remember his little flick to Ramsey against napoli which led to Ozil’s goal), and to preempt having three defenders on him when he is trying to bring down a ball, two behind and one in front of him with his back to goal. He works in a system which fully works only with the players that are at present out with injury. Wenger’s love for the… Read more »

0/270 – Spurs goals vs. Arsenal in 13-14

Henry! Chance! Goal!!

What happened the the “negative spiral” we were supposed to be on? £100M wasted and still in our shadow

AnnArborGooner

Giroud was very poor just looked off the pace seemed to be a little halfhearted today but would expect a big improvement v Chelsea

Oh yes

Lets hope Galatasaray take the chavs to extra time in midweek with lots of cramp, injuries, fatigue, unhappy fans who miss the last tube and a demoralising penalty shoot out defeat (with Mourinho sent to the stands for moaning) before getting thrashed by us next Sunday.

sam

Rosicky can’t be 33.

Just look at how shy he was when Poldi asked him to face the camera.

Bernie

People defending Giroud have no legs to stand on. Today is evident of how rubbish Giroud is. Poor movement, can’t hold on to a pass, can’t dribble, can’t run, poor positioning when the Arsenal is attacking. He can be a back up striker but the main striker for a team like Arsenal? No way!

TimSherwoodsVest

Well, he is our main striker so deal with it! Could we have brought in better options? Yeah, probably. Is this the time to start berating the man for being something hes not? Hell no. We have silverware to win, whinge about how you want Messi and Zico instead of Giroud and Arteta in the summer. Ten games left, lets back the lads.

Az Ahmed

Could not agree more!!!

He is a mid table team striker at best. Would rather have Benteke or Remy.

pabs

What do you base Remy and Benteke being better strikers on? They aren’t doing any better than Giroud this season? Was this also your thinking when he banged in two against Everton the other day? I am at all saying that he is world class, he’s no where near that and has a lot of improvement in him but most time he does put in a good shift.

az ahmed

Benteke showed last season what he is capable of. He is still much younger than Giroud. Giroud is not likely to improve. Benteke has pace. Something we have been lacking up front. He can create and score for himself. He is a beast. Giroud is big but gets knocked off the ball too easily and when he does he just sits there whining like a girl. Benteke has pace, agility and skill. Imagine if he had the service Giroud has had. Giroud has fluffed far too many important chances this season. Scoring 2 against Everton hardly shows Giroud to be… Read more »

az ahmed

The reason they aren’t doing any better is because they don’t have the service. Giroud has had the service and misses too many chances. A better finisher would have scored far more than Giroud. Giroud has average finishing and composure.

Penis

I gave everyone a 10

Yankee Gooner

Giroud is tied for 7th leading scorer in the PL and is the top scorer for Arsenal–he’s not “rubbish” by any stretch, although I’d love to see an upgrade at CF.

CaesarTheGeezer

Again a team piled pressure down our left side targeting Gibbs! He’s a decent player but if we really want to be competing I think it is a position we seriously have to strengthen! I thought Tommy V done brilliantly there against Bayern and should definitely be considered for the matches vs city and Chelsea! Gibbs is quality against lesser opposition but against the good teams he is just to defensively vulnerable! Thank Thierry we have per and kos!

loose_cannon

Feel you were a little harsh on Ox. He missed excellent opportunities but he got in dangerous positions all game and was a great outlet. A 6 at least

David

I believe our keeper’s rating is way too high. He was a very lucky boy today!!!

Ramires and Willian suspended for Chelsea. A great time to face those John Terry punks!!!

COYG!!!

Rufusstan

Can we have Nigel Tufnal scoring for Per and Kos, because this week they needed it.

(just in case) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xgx4k83zzc

@Satt1510

Giroud happen to be very poor all round, sometimes i wonder what the criteria you use in rating a player, he can’t run with the ball, can’t pass the ball, can’t hold up play, one on one with a defender he will be useless looking for somebody to come and help him out. All round he was very poor and that is how he has been almost all through the season, all we want or need is a real striker next season.

chris b

As much as I’d like to slag off Spurs, to be fair to them they put us under some pressure and this game was a battle at times. But we passed their test and I really think this could be such a good pivotal point for us in the season – it gives the team that extra bit of confidence and belief heading into the next gauntlet death-run of games, our titles hopes well and truly alive (what a chance we still have!), and no matter what happens next… we’ve beaten tottenham 3 times this season and helped keep them… Read more »

Also love the fact that most of our players if not all know what it means to win the NLD (judging by their reaction afterwards).

Sp*rs players to me looked like they couldnt be arsed, “ah meh its just another loss” etc abc

Maybe someone should remind them they lost all 3! derbies this season and scored Jack squat!

COYG!

FiremanSam

It was Ox’s strength shrugging off his man and driving forward that led to the goal.

More credit to Ox surely due.

Yeah he fluffed a couple of chances but he made those chances himself through sheer skill, energy and desire. Ramsey and Jack have that mentality too, and that’s what sets them apart from some if our other forward players.

As always this season, full marks to our defense. Woj though might want to forget some elements of his performance today, but he’s still one of the best goalies in the PL for sure.
