It looks like Arsenal are going to need a right-back this summer, but Carl Jenkinson is hoping to save Arsene Wenger a few bob (which he can throw on that striker we all want), by stepping up to replace the departing Bacary Sagna.
The lifelong Gooner didn’t feature too heavily last season, but feels like he’s ready to take on the responsibility of first team football.
Speaking to the Standard, he said, “I feel that I am ready for it. It is never going to be easy to nail down that spot but I believe in myself and I believe in my ability.
“I want that position to be mine for years to come. Of course I have got a long way to go, because this is a club who look for the best players in the world. If I am going to hold down the position for as long as I want to, I have got a lot of hard work on my hands. But I believe in myself.”
With rumours galore about a bid for Serge Aurier, and plenty of other players linked, the former Charlton man has sounded a warning to any incoming competitors that he’s determined to give them a real challenge to become the first choice.
“As far as I am concerned, you will have to drag me out of this club before I leave,” he said. “I will work my socks off and hopefully next season can be a big one for me. If I have a good pre-season, work my way into the team and get a good run of games, there will be no holding me back.”
Whatever else, you can never fault his attitude.
What a drag-king!
OMG YES…sometime you dont need the big players to win you titles. you just need 11 jenkinsons with this amount of passion for the club…
Passion isn’t enough, better start developing common football brain,Jenko corporal
Not sure where your complaint has come from as when he has played, he’s done a good job based on his own experience in first team football.
Two words which completely disprove that statement- Gary Neville. Average footballer but he’d have died for United. I see Jenko having a similar role for us, and England, in the future.
bore off bender
Fatgooner is that you?
Demagogue.
@heroldgoon You are right, actually. Ferguson basically won his last title with a shit team but each one of them had the attitude of Jenkinson. They lost it when Moyesie took over though hahaha 🙂
I remember Frimpong saying something like this not too long ago too. But in fairness, Jenko does say that he’ll run his socks off for the team – and I hope he does!
Difference being Carl has the talent and dedication. It just needs honing. Frimpong was careless in his play, injury prone, and distracted by his other DENCH endeavours.
Whatever happened to the Dench Man!
released by barnsley at the end of this season.
I believe he was released by newly-relegated Barnsley at the end of the season… not so dench.
He is currently a free agent.
Maybe someone should let Arsene know, as we are looking for a DM……
Get in, Jenko! His celebration against Norwich for his goal made me smile. Such passion.
When he did that, my Mrs asked who who was.
I showed her that pic of him in his bedrom – she pissed herself.
(figuratively, not literally, that would be weird).
Living the dream
But we won the FA Cup!!!
Proper right back is Jenks in the Dixon and Winterburn mould. Get in my son.
agree 100%
I would say the same if I played for arsenal. He is living a dream and with sagna going he would get a good chance for first team.
Love the passion. You believe it from a player when he says ‘you’ll have to drag me out’. Cesc, Skunk and co. were all ‘I love this club blah blah, media training’. When you get Jenk laying down the banter gauntlet, you believe it. Hope he ups his endurance and makes a good season of it next time.
if he works on his technique and passing under pressure he’ll be a very decent full back. Massive ‘if’ though.
Why is it a massive if? I’m genuinely intrigued as that is the sort of thing you’d work on during training sessions.
Composure comes with age and experience.
He is a Gunner thru and through and bleeds red! I believe he can perform admirably at Right(Wing)Back next season and into the future as long as he puts a couple wingers in his pocket next season and keeps his focus! When you add his pace and crossing in the final third we could be very well balanced even if we will miss Sagna and his WTF Goldielocks hairstyle and attitude… COYG
Fun fact: Jenkinson has managed 1 goal and 2 assists in 7 starts this Premier League campaign, the same number that Sagna has managed in 34 starts.
To be fair he should have had a few more assists.
Just off the top of my head, crosses against Man U at Mould Trashford and at The Emirates should have been buried by Bendtner and Giroud respectively.
To be fair most of us bleed red.
Its simple. If he is good enough, he will be given a chance by Arsene.
But the boss may bring a right back in so that their is competition for the RB as it is for LB.
The beauty of playing for Arsenal is that, your age doesn’t matter. If you are good enough then you play.
Fabregas, Gibbs, Wilshere etc.
As we’ve seen with the left flank, gotta have 2 anyway. Sagna is just such a remarkably durable player jenks didn’t get even as much time as he would normally expect over the course of this year.
And John Terry is a cunt either way
Stone cold fact right there my friend.
I wish he was given more game time this season.
That’s because Arsene doesn’t forget his birthday.
Wouldn’t say no to a Bugatti though.
There is no doubt about Jankinson, he can replace Signa without any problem, Arsenal will have no problem to replace him. The young man is very good in everthing when given the chance, we have seen him doing that before. I would also feel happy to see him taking a challenge.
Signa made me laugh. In a parallel universe a player called Bacary Signa signed a new two year contract with us.
His crosses are superb
Still remember his 1v1 last-man tackle against robben, he has got it in him!
I remember that too, Robben was ahead of him and I thought we were fuxorred, but Jenks chased him down and got the ball back! Unbelievable.
oh… mate
how lovely 🙂
His performance was really good and consistent when Sagna was out injured last season. Yep.. Wenger kind of dragged him out when the French man came back!
Anyone else get goose-bumps from his celebration against Nowrich?
Yup.
(and some giggles too!)
Not a bad player what so ever. Would love to see him and bellerin fight it out with another decent right back in the mix aswell. The cream will rise to the top
Gutted he missed the cup parade, I have no doubt he will improve year on year.
No worries, he can lead the FA Cup, League Cup, Premier League, Champ League, and Winners of the Universe parades next season.
He was playing extremely well before his that spinal problem. I think if that had not occurred then we wouldn’t be so disappointed to see Sagna leave. Just my thoughts.
Jenkinson’s a gooner
Compare this to recent comments from one Yaya Toure…the bad guys are always the best paid
CORPORAL CARL REPORTING FOR DUTY SIR
He scored a goal, it’s Sgt. Jenkinson now.
what happens when he gets a brace and hat trick later?
I’ll be trying this to confirm his statement.
I’m expecting you to hit me Jenks if you are really serious and committed about this.
Are you upset because Nick didn’t take you with him when he left?
Yes. I was his favourite once. I am however still honoured to be an ex and will cherish the time we’ve spent together, regardless.
If anyone doubts him watch the Bayern away match again. He was top class that day and whenever he’s gotten a run in the first team he’s done very well.
With more game time, his positional sense well improve. He’s got good pace and his crossing is first rate
I hope he’s given a fair chance cos we all want proper Gooners in the team.
Seriously so so happy for Jenkinson! Any real fan out there can relate to him. I wish he really steps up next season and gets that spot. All the very best to him
That’s what we fans want to hear, we have nothing but support, love and respect for your Jenks….Keep working hard!
I want him to make it more than any other young player we’ve had before. He lives and breathes this club and we can all live our dream through him.
I think with a decent run of games Jenks can step up and do a job. It is a risk though, esp with his age and relative lack of experience there is bound to be inconsistency in form and there are bound to be mistakes. So we do need a right back purchase whether you believe Jenks is the man or not. Bring in the best right back we can (subject to who’s available, budget considering we need to spend funds esewhere to etc) and let Jenks and the new guy battle it out. Jenks is an able deputy at… Read more »
well if you’re shit dont worry we will
Dear Jenko, Passion is all well and good until another this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAMQpFXjhgU I believe you, Jenko…but I also know that saying about the heart’s willingness (passion), and the body’s limitations (in this case, your decision-making when under pressure). We have just won a cup so I will try to understand with people calling for you to make the step up; however, do you honestly think these lot will be so gracious towards you when we’re scrapping for fourth place yet again, just after having been dumped out of the cup comps next season? I think not. I don’t want you… Read more »
I hate negative attitudes like yours, every player has made mistakes and they learn from them. That video was poor defending from the whole team, Jenkinson shouldn’t of been left as the last man. Look at the improvement in the past few seasons from players like Ramsey, Szcz, Gibbs, Kos and more, we need to be supporting the players and getting behind them, not jumping on their backs every time something goes wrong. Luckily the manager picks the team and not you, he knows whats best for this club and if he believes Jenkinson is ready to step up then… Read more »
Dear Özil’s Eyes on Arsene’s Hot Thighs,
A nice positive article about a young lad beginning his dream career with his dream emyployer, and you come out with that negative crap.
That was one mistake from a very raw player.
Regards,
Everyone else.
Please put the video link of sagna back passing to Van Skunk next to your video of jenkinson’s back pass… here i’ll do it for you :

one mistake does not make a bad or good quality player.
if we’re scrapping for 4th next year, it will be the whole team, and not one player, at fault.
“one mistake does not make a bad or good quality player.”
I agree, but the consistency of that one mistake does.
Arsenal fans never learn. Replace Sagna with Jenko and the tune is gonna change from “get someone to support Giroud” to “how on earth did we end up with Jenko as first choice right back?!”. Your rivals field Zabaleta, Sagna (if he ends up with one of them), Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Johnson, Seamus Coleman,…. and all you can come up with is Jenkinson?? GTFOH
‘Consistency of that one mistake’? A singular occurrence is definitively the opposite of consistency.
If you intend to slag off the team you should at least use proper syntax.
At least Jenko’s a believer. That means I’ll side with him over you at any given moment.
cheers-
Me.
It is true that Jenks is backup.
It is also true that “Özil’s Eyes on Arsene’s Hot Thighs” has no class.
Got to give Jenkinson a chance. There are other priorities we need to fill before splashing out on another left back.
You dun’ goofed, mate.
Right back….
Jenks plays right back. And we do need another one of them.
Bollocks to Azpilic… (gave up wanting to spell it) and Zaba… (yeah that too)… Jenks is more than good enough to be number one.
Happy to see someone at right back who can cross a ball for a change.
Come on Jenks!!!
As Tony Adams once said. Play for the shirt on you back and they will remember your name
IMO Jenks can turn out better than Sagna. He can dribble past players and puts good balls in. He has the ability, just needs playing time.
Don’t think much of his crossing. media hype.
He puts them in blind. NO point whipping the ball in if its not to a target.
Lets not forget that the Romford Pele relied heavily on passion over technical abilities, but still became a stalwart of the team.
I like Jenks, I like his attitude and the fact that he has an engine in him similar to Ramsey. Think he is still not quite at the level where he would be first choice, but I do think that with a few more appearances this season and he will give the other RB that we get some competition…..that cant be a bad thing, eh?
Jenkinson plays with his heart. Still find him a bit limited technically but he is improving. Interesting to see if Bellerin can give him a run for the money. Think the young Spaniard is better going forward where Jenkinson is more no nonsense at the back which gives him the slight edge. That said, when Sagna departs, we will need a new RB. My preference will be for a player with ready made PL experience so we hit the ground running at start of season. Seamus Coleman if priced under 15m is a good buy. Otherwise Debucchy is also an… Read more »
Aurier looks slightly riskier but looks a solid player with plenty of up side in age.
…the worry would be the lack of experience but some players are naturally mature.
African players OTOH have suffered bc of ACN being an annual affair. Perhaps time for a come back?
Cant see Coleman going for that amount – agree that he would be a good player to bring in, mind.
Totally agree on needing a new RB – think across the back line there needs to be at least 2 good, reliable players for each position.
Fabianski is going to Swansea!
Arsenal.com breaking the news. Nice we get one over the click happy journos!
It’s great to hear such heartfelt passion for the club and his place in it from the lad. But passion and love alone do not a good player make.
There’s just one small problem with his game that needs ironing out. And that’s the howlers. The consistent – nearly one a game – howlers that sometimes (more often than they should) lead to a goal. Until that gets fixed, he sits on the bench. We need a better starting Right-Back.
I think.
With Sagna departing it would be nice to see Jenks promoted to number 1 RB & given the chance though I doubt that will happen just yet. A new RB must be brought in regardless as the need for competition in that position is vital. Many say the loss of Sagna is like losing a player in two positions given Sagna’s ability to play at CB too, However I’m sure Jenks has covered CB before (more so at Charlton & at U21 England level) and he still needs time to build experience. Naturally being a Gooner we all wish he… Read more »
