After signing two right backs in Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, reports this evening suggest that Carl Jenkinon is about to leave the club on loan.
The former Charlton man is set to join West Ham for the duration of next season to play under Sam Allardyce, and although that seems particularly cruel, regular first team football should benefit him.
However, Arseblog News understands that unless he makes a significant improvement in the next 12 months, his Arsenal career is likely to be over.
Popular because of his support of the club, Jenkinson is a player most of us would love to see make it in the red and white, so fingers crossed he can make the step up.
In the meantime, he’s got a season at Upton Park to try and make progress.
Can’t remember ever wanting the second choice right back to make it so badly. Your grand-dad is certainly proud of you, Carl, and you’ll always be a Gunner no matter where you ply your trade. See you in a year, mate!
I don’t think there’s anything really to add anymore except that West Ham are very fortunate.
As a Hammers man I would like to say thanks if it goes through. We’ve needed someone consistent at both left and right back for a while and hopefully it will benefit both us and Carl. And who knows with a bit of luck he might be playing under Allardyce for too long and we’ll go back to keeping the ball on the ground, I’ve always had a respect for Arsenal as you play the way the football should be played. I know Wenger has his critics but I’d take to West Ham all day long and we should be… Read more »
Class act pal, all the very best to you.
It’s nice to see the vast majority of Arsenal fans wishing Jenkinson well.
All he has to do now is resist punching Allardyce in the face for repeatedly saying stupid things for a year.
Some task. But great experience if he can pull it off.
Such a shame for the guy but he has to see this as an opportunity and really prove himself. I am just glad it is a loan, not a permanent deal as initially rumored.
Look at this as an opportunity for improvement that will benefit your Arsenal career in the long term! Good Luck!
He’ll make it. Whenever he had a run of starts at Arsenal, he’s grown into the role and gotten better by each game. At one point, people even thought he should start ahead of Sagna. A whole season of starting in the PL will benefit him immensely. I hope Chambers becomes a future starting CB for us, and Jenkinson being the successor to Debuchy.
nahh..i think wenger see Bellerin ahead of him. he always like technical player and Jenkinson is not that
Your hope is exactly like mine. For some reason I wish Chambers to grow as an excellent CB, and we really need someone young and good there. This is not just because I like Jenko a lot and want him to stay at Arsenal. I hope it ends up that way, soon or later.
I think as long as we have the option to recall him (if we need to) then this can only be good for him.
The upside is, his delivery is fucking excellent and he actually has a decent target to aim at in the middle (Andy Carroll if he’s fit).
Maybe he will whip a few in and the Hammers can take some points off our rivals for us this year.
God speed Corporal.
If it is not already a FA regulation, I hope AW would insists that Jenkinson does not play against us while on loan. I know AW’s position has always been magnanimous and against stopping on-loan players from playing against their parent clubs but on this occasion, I think Jenkinson would appreciate if he is spared from being placed in such quandary position. I can imagine the emotional roller-coaster he would need to go through to play against us.
I can imagine him sliding into the touchline after scoring an OG for us at Emirates.
Sadly, that sort of thing would not help his cause deliberate or otherwise, at least not with Le Boss !
However, if he were to deny us a goal or two while getting up and down the wing and delivering a number of killer crosses, then Wenger will welcome him back with open arms . . . .
. . . as long as that sort of performance is consistant with the rest of the season overall or as part of a steady progression !
NO! He needs to play against us to prove he is worthy. If you let your emotions rule your game every now & then, he can never grow into a Cafu, a Lahm or his idol, a Tony Adams. This is the best move for him, because he has matured massively this season. He will return & hopefully make Debuchy a second-choice next season, I know it. I also believe that Calum Chambers CAN be made in the most amazing DM we will ever see at the Emirates. He just has that special thing about him, good pace & strength… Read more »
Just out of curiosity, how many times have you seen Chambers play?
Will be watching a lot more West Ham games next year!!
I have an issue with this at the moment… I can’t fit Ozil, Alexis, Kos into my team with Jenks until he transfers.
Jenks will be one of my players this year but need that little jersey to change to Hammers before I can submit my team.
Fantasy Premier League that would be, not the Arsenal team, this is not Wenger…..
*fades into the mist
May be he preferred West Ham because its in London. I dont see why he cannot have a Courtois like improvement on loan
3 Courtois-like loans that improves him after 3 years?!?!! Hell, he can mark Arjen Robben with his eyes close…. Jenks just needs some regular play time!
Good luck to the Corporal!!!
Do yourself and every Arsenal supporter a favor this season by smashing in a few goals against those Chelsea, Tottenham, and ManUre cunts!!
Corporal Jenks.. Come back to us next season!!! Make every Arsenal supporter proud!!!
COYG!!!!!
who the hell thumb down that comment? must be 2 spud fans that did it!
Hope he does make it of course.
I think a year is a lot of time, especially if he gets plenty of first team starts, to prove what he’s worth.
And I’m pretty sure IF we were planning to judge him based on this year, Wenger wouldn’t set unrealistic expectations from him. Even just a ‘decent’ season where he does well and shows he can be a star in the future on a more regular basis would be enough to let Arsene keep him.
Getting an England recall would help his cause.
It’s not like Glen Johnson offers much of an obstacle, that should, with regular starts be his incentive. That would surely show Wenger the improvement he wants to see, to some extent.
It looks like Wenger and Hodgson get on well, so any progress discussed by Hodgson with Wenger, regarding Jenks, will be sincere.
Anyway, in short, forcing his way into the England set-up with regular first-team football should be his aim in the short to medium term.
When rvp, nasri, fabregas etc think arsenal is not good enough and leave us to win trophies, people call them traitors. When a player (and lifelong gooner) like jenkinson is being loaned/sold for not being good enough, people say it’s the tough reality of football. Fucking hypocrites.
Im a lifelong gooner, play me?
He’s going on loan. His immediate career with us may be stifled by there now being three RBs, but Wenger hasn’t said “Fuck him. Sell him”, he’s giving him a way to play regularly for a season in a high profile competition (or do you not rate the Premier League?) aand show his stuff. He hasn’t shut the door on him, and Jenks hasn’t whined about his lot. Meanwhile Wenger is going to look at Chambers for a variety of positions during the year, and if he can cut it he may well be a DM by the time Jenks… Read more »
When POB, Na$ri, Ca$hley, Adebuymore, Fabrega$, etc. think Arsenal is not good enough and leave the team for money, we quite rightly call them traitors and sell-outs. When someone comes here for the love of the club and gets loaned out (NOT sold) in order to improve him to the point where he can be a regular contributor, of course we wish him luck. Anyone who thinks Jenkinson’s loan is the same as the others’ defections is a complete fucking idiot.
someones had a shit day haha
Was on the cards since Chambers came in but hopefully will be able to make the step up as he has done in the past when granted the opportunity
Poor Jenko. A quick look at the Premier league table and it looks as if he is going to the team at the bottom. And Big Sam to boot.
Table toppers to bottom dwellers in one easy (pre-season) swoop. Haha. We’ve seen where West Ham are without Jenks, but once he joins them I can see them scoring more points than they have so far and moving higher up the table. If they get off the bottom of the table then I think Jenks will get the Young Player of the Year for dragging them up single-handedly. I’ll definitely be following him this season. I just pray he isn’t ordered to lump long balls up the pitch every time. He can offer much more than that if they let… Read more »
Kindah sad.. But I trust Wenger on this, always been fair to his young players. Carl is gonna come back stronger and better because he’ll put in the hardwork to be good enough for Arsenal.. Where better to learn to defend than West ham or Chelsea
If he spent a season at Chelski he would also get a heavy duty bus driver’s licence and a licence to drive one of those 19th century omnibusses.
I don’t think it’s about him proving to Wenger he’s good enough. I think this is about letting him prove it to himself and then letting him develop into the player Wenger sees in him by getting regular starts. Meanwhile we groom our new versatile CB/DM/No 2 RB with some regular starts and some lessons from Debuchy. Chambers gets his crash course in being a Gunner this season. Gets a few games at RB, gets a few games at CB, gets a few games to see if he can develop as a DM. Next season Jenks comes back to fight… Read more »
I hope wegner is able to convert chambers into a CB and when debuchy leaves in a few years jenko and bellerin can take over. Jenko because he’s a true gooner and bellerin becuase he has a bright future.
We can only hope, because Jenks being a fan doesn’t make Arsene change his mind. If Chambers or Bellerin will improve greatly, Jenks will have to leave whether he’s improved or not. Even Frimpong was an Arsenal fan but he left.
Unless Chambers’ ultimate role is to be a DM/CB, of course. Then Jenks hasn’t got to go unless Bellerin forces him out before Debuchy gets too old.
It all hinges on the Debuchy signing really. He gives us instant benefits at RB, but won’t last there forever, and if Chambers develops in the middle then the career path for Jenks and then Bellerin remains unchanged.
I like what Wenger has done here. He’s given himself plenty of possibilities. He really is a smart manager.
I like Jenko – he works hard; but the stark reality of things is that his technique probably isn’t good enough to be starting for us. That is the kind of thing you can’t really teach someone at his age.
Unless he gets a season of regular starts, maybe ?
Still picturing that goal celebration..Beats Mario Goetze’s final celebration obviously due to the passion showed…The best fans in the world will miss you for now jenks…
But when we win things this season Jenko won’t be able to be a part of it 🙁
A little humility my fellow gooner, please. I would cringe if I read this on any other club’s blogs.
YNWA!!! This year is our year!!!!! Greatest team in the world!!!!!
Haha, be careful you don’t turn into a mugsmasher Brian. They all started out doing it tongue-in-cheek too.
Arsene is not known to give up on a promising lad that easily, albeit one with Jenks dedication and hardwork. HE WILL BE BACK! And when he does come back he is gonna be bad ass!
can’t believe i’m saying this, but i’ll be watching west ham’s games very closely next season to see how he progresses. best of luck to jenkinson.
It’s no different to watching our German trio winning the World Cup.
But what if he stops Citeh, Mugsmashers, Manure, Chel$ki (do we still do that?), and that team I always forget the name of, etc etc. from scoring?. How excellent would that be?. We won’t be fielding 11 + 3 subs each week, it’ll be 12 + 3 subs.
The only difference between us and Chelsea in the table last season was Lukaku.
Lukaku was out there making life easier for Everton against everybody but Chelsea. Points taken off other teams by Lukaku’s goals meant that at the end of the season the many of the teams Chelsea were playing had already fallen by the wayside and had nothing to play for against Chelsea. Lukaku’s goals for Everton helped to do that.
Either that or I’m just looking at the world with a weird squint.
This year Jenks is going to be brilliant for West Ham.
Next year Jenks is going to be brilliant for Arsenal.
Nah, you’re right.
It’s annoying that they can do it with a higher class of player (footballistically) due to their bottomless pit of money, but if Gnabry goes out on loan to somewhere like Southampton he will be doing the same as Jenks, so can’t complain too hard.
Don’t fret. Jenks still gonna win a whole load of shit with us cause there’s no stopping us from here on.
Great Comments
I do hope Jenko returns next year fighting for his place with Debuchy, playing for us the League Champions……
Hmm …not the impossible dream but more of an inevitable reality than ever before.
COYGS !!!!
Chambers is a good buy, and he undoubtedly has bags of potential. Just don’t get this situation with him and Jenks though. All the talk of paying premiums for young English talent, and taking a gamble on the youngster. Just think we already have a promising young English RB in Jenks, and whilst game time is important for his progression, he would still have had plenty of opportunities with us this season. Would of made more sense to me if we had bought Chambers and loaned him straight back to Southampton. Don’t forget Jenks won his first England cap last… Read more »
I see it a bit differently. While Chambers will stay to start his remoulding into cb/dm by learning from the likes of Per, Kos, and Mikel as soon as possible, Jenko is in a position where he badly nedds to play 20+ league games, including tough ones against top teams. And the only way how he could get that with is would be Debuchy’s injury. I just hope the Arsenal thought twice about this and are pretty sure Jenko will get a lot of playing time.
Unfortunately I think this is the end of the road for Jenkinson.
I think he is a good defender. The only problem is that he is not technical enough for Arsenal’s passing game. Technique is the first thing that develops for a player and I think he has simply ran out of time to refine it.
He will do well for Fat Sam’s direct game which is a lot of chasing, running and crossing. All of which Jenkinson excels in.
Hopefully he does well and get sold to Everton next season for good $$ and a buyback clause.
I wouldn’t say definitely “the end of the road” but rather “his chance to improve”. Under different circumstances he would have been given the chance to play but Wenger knows he will have to challenge the title this year and knows Jenks is not up to that standard yet. With Debuchy, he wouldn’t have the chances to play so he’s been given the chance to play and improve in a Premier team. Young Calum will have no problem sitting on the bench for a year and getting 15 games overall would be sufficient.
It’s a very logical move for all.
I wasn’t a fan of loaning Jenks out right now… i felt it was better to keep him for a run in the cups… but, your point about the number of games hit home to me… it would be a bit selfish of the Arsenal to “stunt his growth” when what he needs right now is experience and game time…
@Black Hei not necessarily. while in aan ideal world, you would want every arsenal player to have a great technique, it is just not the case. look at sagna, he is an awesome defender, but technically not so great. Look at flamini. you want a deep lying midfielder to have the great technique, like arteta. Look at Theo walcott, yes he is a very good finisher, but apart from that does he have great passing or dribbling ability? doesn’t stop him from being lethal to opposition defense. And you have to consider all this after accepting your premise that Jenkinson… Read more »
You weren’t very Harsh at all there really 🙂
good luck jenks! we love ya
This loan move is the best deal for all.
*Arsenal get to play more experienced players
*Westham get a very reliable rb who can contribute in attack, especially the crosses
*Jenkinson can get ample playing time and get invaluable experience
*Fans will likely see a much improved Jenkinson next season who can challenge for a starting position
He will return a stronger player. Not a bit of doubt about that.
On the other hand Fat Sam may turn him into chewing gum if he goes beyond the halfway line or fails to clear every ball at least 50 yards.
Good luck Corporal Jenks! Come back to be a regular starter at The Arsenal when Wenger brings you back
Isn’t Allardyce rumoured to be on his way out over there? Could be a bad move if the new manager doesn’t fancy Jenks and he’s back to square one with no games but at a totally shite club.
There are always rumours of Allardyce being sacked. I even hear rumours of him being fired from his next job.
He already has. Barcelona sacked him yesterday in response to his tweet to them saying “We play in all-white, yeah?”.
Pleased with the signing of Jenkinson, and we are all hoping he gets the right back shirt for the season. Knowing Allardyce though, he will warm the bench and he’ll play bloody Demel or O’Brien ahead of him each week!!!
And for those planning to watch us next season, I wouldn’t bother, it’s awful…….
To be honest I think a club like west ham would do wonders for jenkinson. His crossing is his strong point and they usually play with a tall target man upfront.
He’s certainly not ready to be number 1 at arsenal and one positive for the lad is if he doesnt return, he’ll always remember his final competitive appearance for the gunners which ended up bagging himself a goal.
Good luck where ever he ends up.
I have a feeling that Chambers is going to be a future CB or DM with us with the Corporal as our RB…..another alex song type of learning curve for Chambers.
Well if his interview was quoted accurately he sounds like an intelligent chap, and we know he’s young and versatile. That’s just the kind of player he likes to mold to fit in his vision of how the game should be played.
“Popular because of his support of the club…” and because he’s a good player and a nice bloke. Piers Morgan ‘supports’ the club, supposedly.
Yeah, but Piers Morgan hasn’t scored a goal for us, so fuck him.
I would rather not. Ever.
If you are reading this Carl, you’re a Gooner through and through and no one can take that away from you. We will wait for your return. Forever COYG!
Jenk and the Fatman
Jenkinson is an average player who is fortunate to be at a club like Arsenal FC. Wenger will sell him for a profit and everyone will be happy, including Jenkinson.
No, Daddy, only you would be happy.
Being a ‘ nice bloke’ with regards to Jenkinson is not enough to win the EPL, you also need skill and technical ability which the corporal lacks !
Oh well jenks is to play for a team with no midfield. Hoof ball time
If he was a midfielder, I could understand this complaint but he isn’t.
He’s joining a club with a manager that likes defensive football and considering he’s a defender this seems beneficial. Also, he’s joining a team that likes the conventional ‘big man up top’. This will require him to keep improving his crosses in order to allow said big man to either score headers or knock the ball down, again I can only see this as beneficial considering this is one of his strengths.
Maybe so, but with Jenks it will be accurate hoof ball time.
It could be the end for Carl.
No questioning his commitment but he seems a very one dimensional player and his much vaunted (by the media) crosses are whipped in blind.
With Bellerin progressing and now Chambers, I think Wenger has called time on Jenko.
West Ham is either the shop window or his last chance to work his way back in but doubtful.
The problem with signing Chambers is :
1) He cost 11m which could have been spent in another area of the pitch we need reinforcing more urgently
2) He is potentially good but will need time
3) He may take time to settle into a Cback position with minimal experience at the moment.
Evidently,Wenger does not rate Jenkinson’s potential to develop further, hence the move.
I don’t get the thumbs down. We spent 28m on RBs, and we can’t say that we’re terribly improved from last season (Sagna + Jenks = Debuchy + Chambers). More pressing is we need a CB. I don’t get this buy as it does not improve us THIS year.
RE #1: I have to ask, which area of the pitch needed reinforcing more urgently than CB?
But surely we don’t want to end like manure here whre a certain long-term serving manager left the team as a wreck of clueless ‘players’ with no potential, right? Trust me, Arsene have watched that carefully and won’t do the same mistake. Mostly because he actually cares about the club, not only about himself.
The good thing about signing Chambers is : 1) He cost 11m why wait another year when he would potentially cost 27m like Luke Shaw 2) He has potential and yes he will need time. Yes the short term is important but lets not neglect the future 3) It’s a long season with the Carling cup and games against the lesser teams giving him plenty of time to develop at CB without being detrimental to the team. Two very experienced CB to help with this development. Evidently Wenger rates jenkinsons potential hence loaning him and allowing him valuable game time.… Read more »
Imagine going from Wenger to Allardyce? Talk about caviar and sausages.. Anyway like everyone else I really hope he’ll be back next season, better than ever
But… I like sausages.
And I don’t like caviar. How about … “prime rib and chuck steak”?
I just LOVE it when we have a true GOONER playing for us….it shows in everything he does and says…I SO HOPE that he does well whenever he is loaned out to, and comes back a better player I don’t totally agree that Wenger doesn’t like him, and he knows the fans all love him, so as long as he plays regularly wherever he goes , then I am sure he will be back Good point you made arseneissynonymouswitharsenal about Jenks not playing against us…I cannot imagine how he will feel if he has to line up against us next… Read more »
Sad to see a true gooner move on ,all the best jenks
May you resist the urge to punch fat Sam right in the middle of his fat face, have a great season and come back to us and be part of our secondconsecutive champions league victories
Good news imo, more so given the defensive nature of an allerdyce team, i suspect Arsene isn’t looking for a Ramsey esc improvement to keep him, but more like as he said about younger players and the 1s who always want more etc. should improve him so even the haters can’t complain, extra seasons exp will at the very least drive his price up, and at the best give us a quality right back.
As I said yesterday – I thought that West Ham on loan was the best choice for him. Why? Because I think, for all Allardyce’s faults, one thing that he can do is organise a defense and Jenks will learn a lot from him in that respect. If the loan move is confirmed I will delighted. I didn’t want him to leave us permanently, I think he has potential, plus he is one of us. He is living our dream, the one we never got to realise. The people that are saying good riddance etc, mustn’t ever have grown up… Read more »
Good luck Jenko, you’ll be a marauding LB after a season at Hammers.
Play evey game like it’s Bayern away, and you’ll be an Arsenal legend. Good luck Jenko.
Good luck behind enemy lines, Corporal Jenkinson!! May your career find its way safely back to the Arsenal. A true Gooner!!
I think after Jenkinson leaves on loan Chambers will cover at RB in his place but while being prepared to move in to a more central role, probably as holding midfielder (like Wenger played Ramsey out wide at first). If Jenkinson is succesful he will return to retake his squad position and Chambers will be moved to holding midfield and be the long term replacement for Arteta. I really don’t think Chambers is meant to replace Jenkinson. But you know, I might be a bit bias just because I want him to make it here so badly 🙂
This reminds me of when I was a skinny 15 year old kid back in 84. My mum decided to take a job in California and we had to move away from all our friends and family in New Jersey. My New school was full of big kids that were all really good at Karate. I got beat up a lot to begin with but with hard work and the the right guidance I managed to win the All Valley Karate tournament against the odds and earn the respect of my bullies. The whole experience was stressful but made me… Read more »
Though I hope West Ham’s setup won’t be as defensive as to force Jenks to focus on karate…
Yeah, but three years down the track you got dumped by your girlfreind and not long after that you got dumped by your teacher, and for a girl too.
Not sure if it’s already been said but I’m surprised Southampton didn’t put a loan in the Chambers transfer. We take your RB so you can borrow ours. They clearly have a phenomenal academy, so training and improvement is clearly important there.
I agree especially as they seem to have good footballing philosophy I think Arsene wants him getting regular football and at Soton he would be competing with Nathaniel Clyne for a starting spot.
I don’t think Jenkinson’s career in Arsenal is over. Arsene reportedly told Chambers that he can play many positions meaning that him being the long term right back is not carved on granite. I see Jenks as the no1 full back, Bellerin as back up and Callum as a centre back in about three seasons.
I hope all these are just rumours?!
I just worry about the prospect of Fat Sam and his notorious ways of stifling players who don’t hoof the ball.
FFS, Chamakh couldn’t get minutes when he went to West Ham but started almost every match under Pulis!
