Arsenal prospect Wellington Silva has been in Spain for so long that he’s due to qualify for a European passport that will put an end to his work permit problems.
Signed from Fluminense in 2011, the Brazilian winger hasn’t been able to play competitively for the Gunners without the correct documentation (he was denied a ‘special talent visa’ by UK authorities a month after his arrival) and has subsequently embarked on loan spells with Levante, Alcoyano, Ponferradina, Murcia and current club Almeria.
Wellington has hardly set the world alight over the last few years – his love of pizza being noted by annoyed officials at Levante – but he’s recently been called up to the Brazilian under-21 squad and retains hope of playing in London.
“It was not as I expected, but things are starting to move again,” Wellington told Globo Esporte about the impending Spanish passport.
“It was tough enough, but now with the passport I can have a chance to return to Arsenal. Doors now open at any country in Europe. Now more people are watching, including Arsenal themselves.
“I’m very excited for the passport soon. In two months it’s ready, and the opportunities become larger. I am very happy that things are starting to happen.
“I would be very happy if I could be an idol at a club like Arsenal, but I can no longer think about it, it depends on a lot of work. But I’m working to improve my game, my experience. And I will give my best so I can be a great player. I need to think of Almeria, which is also in a tough league. I want to have a great season here so that Arsenal can see.”
Wellington is under contract at Arsenal until the summer of 2016 meaning he still has some leeway before Arseblog News dubs him the ‘new Pedro Botelho‘.
Can he play CB?
He’s still surprisingly young, younger than Campbell. If he was a defender I’d say there was a door for him.
If he can’t get into our team at the moment he should take up something else
Great News…
But is he good enough to make it at Arsenal? I don’t think so.
He’s barely been able to string together a bunch of appearances for Spanish 2nd division sides.
Better youngsters are waiting in line for their chances.
Ask yourself in all honesty, have you actually paid attention to him? Because most who just write him off rarely have.
Not only did he had a great second half of last season, when it seemed he finally clicked, but his performance gave him a shot at his current club, where he has been playing quite regularly send had a good performance against current champs Atletico.
All I know is he’s a winger/offensive midfielder. Sanchez, Walcott, Gnabry, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Podolski, Campbell are the names of those who stand in his way. Not to mention other youngsters making their way up. He will really be better off elsewhere.
Maybe allow another year of developement and if he’s not showing enough by then….give him the boot.
good report
But is he any good?
Established internationals like Campbell can’t get into this Arsenal team. Our team is so well stocked with forwards.
He must have some special ability like being able to walk on water or turn water into 100 year old wine.
Otherwise he isn’t getting in this team.
Unfortunately I not see him making the cut. And even if he did, he’ll have to compete for it. And the competition is stiff at the gunners flanks. Everybody plays there.
If he has to compete to make the cut, then that’s only a good thing as far as I’m concerned. If he can beat off competition from Cazorla, Walcott, Ox, Campbell, Poldi and Gnabry to get himself some game time, that would bode well for his future.
I haven’t seen him play though. Anyone got a clue as to how likely it is that he makes it through?
I’ve seen a few videos and the kid looks quick. He better be bloody good to make it into the team, especially with all the wingers we currently have. This is kind of like the Joel Campbell situation. Give Wellington a full pre season and see how we goes.
Where on earth is Ryo?
Fc twente
Well, I recalled in my Fifa 15 career due to his not to shabby rating and he helped me go on to win 4 trophies. If that doesn’t make us get him back, nothing will!
“his love of pizza being noted by annoyed officials at Levante”
Pizzagate 2, coming soon!
If we gave Ryo a chance, then i dont see why Wellington shouldnt get a run out in the Carling/Capital 1/Coca Cola/Littlewoods cup.
If he impresses then he’ll get a more mins, if not we cash in/cash out 🙂
21 is still very young and he’s maturing. His performances in the top flight this season have been good. He deserves a chance.
It’s not that young. 21 is the age you want players to start breaking into the first team. He’s the same age as some of the best upcoming players in the world and no one has ever heard of him. He’s only 4 years younger than Alexis Sanchez. The same age as De Sciglio, Carvajal and Oxlade Chamberlain and he’s older than Raheem Sterling. If he can’t prove to be one of the best, he has no place at Arsenal FC. That’s the attitude I want us to have anyway.
No doubt he’ll be looking at Joel Campbell’s development with relish
Think of the amount of players that did not really establish themselves until their late 2Os
Robben, Van Persie even Giroud and koscielny for example
There is still time for him to be educated and grow as a player and I think he deserves the chance.
Guys don’t shun this guy he’s similar to Alexis works hard probably more skilled tho never gives up and chase everything down.. definitely a guy worth giving a chance to
Yeah I’ve been surprised by his work rate, considering he was reportedly so lazy.
At the game I saw him play recently, he was doing so much tracking back and tackling, I thought he was a fullback at first.
Still one of the more talented youngsters in terms of raw talent. As for him not getting a chance? Maybe mot now, but considering the ages of Rosicky, Podolski and Cazorla, there’s definitely openings in the future.
Give him the boot.
This was reported a while back, should be close to getting the passport now.
Fingers crossed the hard journey that it took to get him a passport means he will have his head screwed on when he gets a chance.
So much for signing Pedro..
haha! Nicely done, Tj 😀
Bit early thinking about becoming an idol at Arsenal.
Next Eusebio.
Wenger and Arteta will be doing station announcements:

Another waste?
I like pizza.
I prefer kebabs. Or beef wellington.
If he keeps stuffing himself with pizza, “Beef Wellington” might indeed become his nickname…..
Not good enough.
We don’t need anything in January other than a Cback.
Saw Wellington play with Dan Crowley and others for a young Arsenal XI vs Boreham Wood in a pre-season a few years back. He was one of the most talented on the field then and looks to have improved since.
Similar style to Willian at Chelski.
All I know that I bought him in Football Manager 2010 for 300k and five years later he was one of the world’s most sought-after, technically gifted pacy strikers, worth 25 million.
He’s bound to turn out amazing.
i respect those who have not seen him play and say so. i’ve seen him play and if he Wenger gives him a chance he’ll be competing with Walcott and Sanchez. he works as hard as Sanchez and more skillful than the Chilian, still a bit raw but in terms of talent he is as good as Neymar and maybe even a little stronger than the Barca number 11. the Pizza story is getting a bit too old, Ramsey loves steak, so why cant Silva have pizza? the last match i watch was against Atletico Madrid and he had a… Read more »
