Having been added to the first team squad – at least on the official Arsenal website – Isaac Hayden will have to wait before getting another game under his belt.
The young defender has picked up what appears to be an ankle injury, having posted a picture on his Twitter account of him standing beside many doors wearing a protective boot. He’s expected to be out of action for around two months.
His chances of playing were slim but given the paucity of options at the back, and our propensity to pick up injuries, the door might have been opened to him. And with the manager on record as looking for a defender in the January window, his chance to impress as a centre-half may have passed him by.
However, it’s worth noting that he’s played a considerable amount of football as a defensive midfielder, and given his stature and physique, he might fancy his chances of making an impact there should be get the opportunity.
Meanwhile, fellow youngsters Semi Ajayi and Julio Pleguezuelo have been training with the first team squad in the absence of Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny from the defensive roster.
That’s a shame for him. He was good against Southampton. But knowing our luck Mertesacker will be ruled out for six months and the defensive reinforcement will be an injured Chris Samba or something, so chances are he might still get a look in this season.
