Wenger wants benefits of Old Trafford win

Arsene Wenger want Arsenal to go and win against Man United on Sunday not simply for the fact that it will secure at least third place for the Gunners, but how it will have a psychological impact on his team.

Results against the big sides have been better this season, and Arsenal have already won at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, so the Frenchman is hopeful his side can repeat that feat.

“First of all we can mathematically put a distance between them and us in the top four and basically secure the top three,” he said.

“Also, we can make a symbolic statement because we won over there in the FA Cup. To reproduce that would be psychologically important.

“To do it again would convince us more that we have the strength and can be even stronger next season and show that we have made progress. In the recent years it was a difficult ground for us and that is what we want to show: that we have made progress.”

The manager was pressed on his summer transfer plans but while playing down interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, he admitted they’d start work on new arrivals and squad rejiggling at the end of the season.

He also touched on the fact some players may not make the start of the new campaign due to the short break.

“What is even more important now is that the international competitions force you most of the time to start the new season without your players.

“You cannot give them a long enough rest when they have played international games. You know that in England we have no break in the winter. That’s sometimes difficult to deal with.”

Rejiggling is a word which should be in common parlance. “After the recent election win, David Cameron will be rejiggling his cabinet.” It really adds a jovial aspect to precedings.

the only sam is nelson

“Rejiggling his knob in a food blender” would add more joviality, but your point still stands I guess

AllGunsABlazin

Would paygood money to see David Cameron’s knob and a food processor in the same place.

Very good money.

Oor Wullie

Haha

Stringer Bell

Really big game for us. To lose would put huge pressure on games against Sunderland and west brom who will both come to defend. My team talk would be something like “you are better than this mob, much better, now go out and take the game to them, take em to the fucking cleaners, beat the scum sucking cunts” I get a bit carried away. Coyg

CB

That’s Arsene’s usual team talk.

I’d prefer them to come to us, us to stay solid and then scoot down the other end and score. But whatever, a win is a win.

Fatgooner

The team talk should be three simple words: “Do not lose.”

A draw would suit us fine. But I think we’ll win because unlike Swansea United will attack. With our counter-attacking abilities we should net at least a couple of goals. And that should do it.

Papas

you feeling OK this morning?

David Hillier Handled My Luggage

This is becoming something of a habit for you, Fatty……. someone’s really starting to get the hang of this glass half full business.
Fair play and good point!

I think they will come out and play. If that’s the case, we will win. If not, it’ll be a bit trickier but I think we have enough to break that god-awful defence down.

Tom thumb

When I read “wenger wants benifits”,I thought he was after getting the sack

Mark Hughes

So you didn’t read the whole sentence, is that what you’re saying?

Tom thumb

Twas a joke,a bad one at that

Ramsey's Spirit

Win would be nice, draw would realistically do, 1 thing is for sure, we CAN NOT go and play like we did against swansea, I am obviously a big ramsey fan, but his effectiveness on the right is dubious, the knock in the previous game compounded this, as welbeck isn’t available, and we seem set on Cazorla in the middle(no bad thing, it just increases competition for ramsey and wilshire) then our only realistic choices are walcott or rosicky, with an outside shot of playing debuchy if by some miracle hes fit and putting bellerin as a winger. i’d suggest… Read more »

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Don’t understand why lot of fans are pushing for Bellerin on the wing. He never played there before. The only example we had at Arsenal was Éboué as a winger and it was a flop.

cygan'sbaldspot

He was a winger at Barcelona.

John C

A winger in the Barcelona youth team, is not quite the same as a winger at Barcelona

Ramsey's Spirit

3 points, 1 he has played there before, infact the majority of his footballing education took place on the wing, 2 hes bloody quick can cross and can track back to defend, and 3 because we’re trying to find an alternative to theo who seems to have fallen out of favour there. irritates me when people thumb down, but lack the decency to make their point in rebuttal, so props for commenting, note i did put bellerin third after theo and rosicky…

Dick Swiveller

Yeah, I think it would be a mistake to suddenlY go to a system we have never really played though, Bellerin’s attacking talents are well utilised at fullback and any potential gain from him being further up the pitch more often would be outweighed by not only unbalancing our attack but alos our defence, with bringing Chambers in. The main reason Theo isn’t seeing much play there is that Rambo is a decent option on the right and his performances don’t warrant him being dropped, plus the balance of a striker on one wing and a midfielder on the other… Read more »

Gus Caesar

That’s a longer sentence than Jimmy Saville would’ve got…

Ramsey's Spirit

maybe im just thick, care to explain?

Dick Swiveller

There’s no full stop in your post, meaning it is all one long sentence that runs together, and if Jimmy Saville was ever charged his potential jail sentence would have been very long too.

J Bird

A Frenchman coming over here and wanting benefits! This is enraging! Get the fire and pitchforks out!

Tony Hall

We had better fucking play better than we did against Swansea as that was awful.

Nordin

Playing Hector Bellerin on the rite wing with Debouchy at rite back is actually an excellent idea!! That will snub united attack on that side of the field.

Randy Pan the Arsenal Fan

And afterwards they can all go down to the nite klub to celebrate

Fatgooner

Don’t you mean the Knight klob?

Paul

Playing Debuchy at right back would not be such a good idea as he’s injured!

santori

If anything the player who should be playing on the wing is Theo. He isn’t a false 9. He needs to help stretch the game for us. That said if he starts wide and is given instructions to stretch the game, he can still reap benefit for us cutting in and playing off of Giroud (something Ramsey does) OTOH you cannot beat Ramsey’s work rate both going forward and defending which is why he has had the nod. The other player who frankly will give us a lot of juice out wide is Jack. He came on and injected a… Read more »

My Free Kick

Doing the ‘double’ at Old Trafford would be fucking excellent.

CLEgooner

I’m All for general bus parking with selected counterattacks. If we draw, we only need one point from the last two to avoid the CL qualifier if my Math’s right.

Time for boring boring Arsenal. Doubt we’ll see that though.

Ferngunner

If Santi is on form and enjoying himself all over the pitch we will win. If he is NOT like VS Swansea the middlefied battle will be lost and United will win. He is that Important.

WengersNoseHair

Apparently Shrek will miss the match. What a pity. I was hoping Diaby could come on in the 90th minute and boot his face inside out.

Mpls

Let’s not go and do Rooney any favors now.

Ex-Priest Tobin

Please Wenger don’t waste space with Walcott. He’s not good enough for Arsenal anymore.

kirk the 70s pin-up

Agree with everything he said, but I do feel whenever one of ours talks like this we get served up.

Arsene has to say this at press con, but I hope we don’t get theo and per talking about how our togetherness will see us through.

kafka

kirk, i’ve noticed it as well. almost every time, this kind of talk ends up preceding a serving up.

flappylegs

I think that the stuff the players say on the official website also falls into the category “What else are they going to say?”. I don’t know if they can just decline the interview and do their talking on the pitch as they say… probably contractually obligated.

Not that it really bothers me by the way, it’s something to read and occasionally interesting.

David Hillier Handled My Luggage

C’mon, smokes. Let’s go.

Paul

Hey Manure we’re coming!

wellarsed

He may have phrased it this way to divert the inevitable questions, but I don’t understand why we aren’t identifying transfer targets & beginning negotiations now. Chelsea & Man U begin the process well before the season ends & as a result usually have good business wrapped up early. Arsenal isn’t a big enough club to walk & chew gum at the same time?

David Hillier Handled My Luggage

Of courses he has identified transfer targets, he’s not an idiot! All clubs identify targets all the time through various scouting networks etc. Some choose to tell everyone about it but a lot don’t. Wenger has never been one for speaking candidly to the press about his dealings in the transfer market until they’re all tied up. That’s why we’ve known very little about a lot of our signings, since 96, until they’re either finalised or close to being finalised…..Gabriel being a rare exception, where the boss was uncharacteristically public about the whole process. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over… Read more »
