Various reports this evening suggest Petr Cech’s move to Arsenal is moving ever closer.
Despite the Mail insisting the deal was done, journalists close to Arsenal like David Ornstein of the BBC and Jeremy Wilson from the Telegraph insist nothing is complete yet.
Indeed, Cech’s agents even took the Mail to task for suggesting the move had been finalised:
It’s likely the Mail’s info is as good as anyone else’s and they’ve simply jumped forward a few steps so they can claim to have been the first to confirm it.
In this world of ITKs they can simply ignore any criticism if, for some reason, this deal doesn’t go through.
Anyway, it’s more smoke, the fire is burning more intensely than ever, and it looks as if the Czech international will be an Arsenal player sooner rather than later.
However, until all the Is are dotted and the Ts are crossed, you just never know what might happen in any transfer deal.
Finding it difficult to think of any goalkeeper better than Cech in Europe other than maybe De Gea and Cortious… Top quality signing.

An alexis/ özil signing of the central midfield persuasion puts us up level favourites for the title with Chelsea. Mourinho’s arrival at Chelsea coincided with our downturn, but the idea of mourinho vs wenger as the top two teams a la wenger vs Ferguson has always been a tasty proposition. Can’t wait for this season.
What about Manel neuer? Don’t get me wrong cech is quality but I’d consider neuer or lloris as good or better, don’t forget lloris plays for a shit team and still has good stats.
Neuer would cost at least 25m and it doesn’t seem like he wants to leave Bayern. Lloris would be a great option but i find it hard to believe Levy will let him join us regardless of the amount of money. Cech is the only world class Goalkeeper who is not first choice in his team and relatively cheap. Casillas is an option but i’d much rather have Cech as he is PL and England acclimated.
Definitely Lloris for me. The really top-top keepers (De Gea, Courtois, Neuer) are out of our price range but I can’t believe Spurs will hang on to Lloris if a decent offer comes in. Bet he goes to United. I’m not massively against the Cech transfer but he wouldn’t be my first choice and, given his wages, he’s not coming cheap. Szczesny is ofcourse younger and better than Ospina. But just imagine, how long will he be ready to play second fiddle to Cech? He is already frustrated a little right now for sitting on the bench. He is definitely not gonna renew his contract, assuming that Cech will seal the main goalkeeper role for another 4-5 years. In that case what is the point in opting Szczesny based on his age? Well, the entire reason for getting an older keeper is to give Szczesny a chance to sort his head out. As it stands, the only thing Cech is better than Szczesny at is withstanding a bit of pressure, either that or simply keeping himself level headed, whatever it is that causes Szczesny to go off the boil. So, if Woj sorts himself out then we have better, more experienced cover while Cech is here, if he doesn’t then we have a decent keeper that is over 6 foot.

Between that and the other factors, it would have to be Ospina moving on for me.
The other possible scenario I see is Ospina being more accepting of being cup keeper for a year while Szcz goes on loan to a starting role, guaranteed to return.
But I’d prefer WS stays here, learns from Cech, and wins some cups.

Petr Cech did them great service and he gets the move he wants and we pay Chelsea more than enough to get what we want (i.e if Wenger wants Cech). End of Story. Posted this elsewhere today but my thoughts currently: This is an excellent signing (if it’s actually happening). I don’t agree with those that say (not here but elsewhere) that there’s little difference between Cech and Scz and Ospina when they’re on form. Cech on form wins you a Champions League or the necessary 6 points that can be the difference between winning the title and coming second. The line from the media is that Szczesny wants to stay and fight for a place, whereas Ospina wants to leave. That seems like the decision is being made for us.
I’m ambivalent. I think Ospina can be underrated at times. Both him and Szczesny are young enough to learn from Cech and look at being his long-term successor in a couple of years if they improve commensurately.
To me, Ospina is a perfect number 2: someone who doesn’t cost you any points, but doesn’t really win you any either. Szczesny is a potential future number 1, as he can make the saves that win points, but this season he wasn’t as reliable as you need a goalkeeper to be. Keeping Szczesny would make more sense in the long run, but Ospina could be an important squad player for many years to come as well. This is probably the first genuinely experienced goalkeeper since Seamen retired. I know a lot would talk about Lehman but apart from that invincible season and CL 2006 run he was wayward and prone to mistakes. Think Cech is a massive upgrade to all the goalkeepers we had since then. Personally, I don’t think we need anymore players but if Wenger goes out buy one or two, I wouldn’t be complaining much.

Didn’t really expect this to happen, but if Cech really wants to join us, then it would really be a shite move by Chelsea to block it after all his years of service. Obviously Mou would have no problem being a dick to block it if he could, but then Cech could simply play out his final year of his contract and come us for free next year.

– we sign cech
– we loan out scz (courtois style) for exp
– leaves us ospina ass #2 for cupmatches and back up.
– we still have a decent martinez as #3
– In 3-4 years time cech will make way for grown up scz while ospina will be sold.
– a buy back clause works too for scz in case we go that route

Arsenal show an interest in one of their best players and the whole thing has to be above board, professional, gentlemanly and discreet. The potential transfer is worked on in an atmosphere of businesslike respect.

I don’t doubt that’s the point. It will either be the catalyst for Chesney to go up a gear or it won’t be and we’ll still have a WC keeper for the next 3/4/5 years. Its win-win.
I also think that this is the main big signing we need this summer. A lovely new shiny striker and a midfield destroyer would be nice, but a WC keeper instantly makes us contenders.
