The news that Jack Wilshere will have to undergo surgery to fix his broken fibula has come as a huge blow to Arsenal, but also to the player himself.
After a good pre-season, during which he looked to build fitness after an extended absence last season, the midfielder is set for at least three months on the sidelines as he recovers from this latest problem.
It’s got to be so tough for the Wilshere, a young man who lives for football, as a seemingly endless succession of injuries prevent him from playing the game.
However, Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta says he and the squad will be there to support him as he begins yet another programme of rehab.
“He has an enormous talent and support from every department of the club, and from the players because we feel sorry for him,” he said.
“He has an amazing career ahead of him. We are responsible for putting that into his head every day and to not allow him to fall down because, at some stage, that is the danger; that he does not believe in himself or his body and he needs to trust himself.
“Jack unfortunately has had a lot of difficult moments, but he has shown a lot of character and enthusiasm. He needs to use it to prove he can get back.”
Suggestions that this injury might be career threatening were played down by Arsene Wenger at his pre-game press conference in Zagreb this evening.
“This kind of injury is not career-threatening. I am not a specialist, but this was just an accident. It is a bone injury. It is not linked with the injuries he had before.
“There is nothing malicious in there, just a part of his bone that has not healed.”
We wish him well and hope that he can stay fit to fulfill the potential he has – and that’s proper skipper stuff from Arteta too.
Always appreciate the news, even when it’s bad. FWIW, fibia isn’t a bone. Lower leg bones are fibula and tibia.
Still, I’m sure Jack could find a way to break a made up bone.

Absolutely gutted for him. It must be so brutal to be constantly F’d in the A’ by injuries. It must be such a challenge near /on impossible to stay headstrong and positive when these injuries/set backs are becoming such a regular occurrence. I just don’t know whether we are ever going to see him fully fit playing a full season, which is a real shame. Because I think has the potential to be a world beater someday.
I feel for Jack and for the loss of a promising player.
However, I doubt he can play regularly. He has had too many hairline and stress fractures in the same area, it seems like he has a fundamental weakness in his bones, perhaps in his lower leg and ankles specifically. Some people are not made for sports, even the people who are do lifelong damage to their bodies.
The fans will support him too
Arteta always knows how to support the younger players in tough situations like this. For me, he is a very good captain, but I know he’s not for everyone.
Sadly some of the supporters don’t give enough significance to this side of captaincy and other things he does behind the scenes.
They have this image of Keane and Terry shouting around which sadly signifies a good leader for them.
There are different types of leaders who have different styles of leadership and we should start appreciating these players.
Jack’s still young and has a long and successful career ahead of him. He showed what he can do when he’s fit with six MOTM performances in a row for England. I hope he comes good from this latest setback and has a fantastic second half with us.

Santi Cazorla is 30 and has just reached his peak. He plays in a similar position to Jack Wilshere and given that Jack is 7 years his Junior, he does indeed have plenty of time to fulfill his potential.

Everything you know about the sport must come from fifa man. So if a Pogba or Gotze came in and got an unlucky long term injury would you piss them away the next transfer window too? Keep it realistic and support the kid
Am I being unrealistic? Is it unrealistic to assume Jack Wilshere will spend more time injured than playing for the first team? Based on past experience it is more than likely. Pogba is awesome, no doubt there. but paying through the teeth for him does not exactly constitute ‘value’. It’ll take two kings’ ransoms to beat Barca and the others to his signature.

Yes, it was a challenge from Gabriel that caused the original injury. There are rumours that people posted death threats on Twitter after it happened. All that proves is that some people on Twitter are idiots.

RVP had also his injury issues before exploding as a player. Hope Wilshere does the same, the injuries he is suffering are rather accidents. Although you wonder if his playing style with often holding to the ball a bit too long has a part in his injury record.
Is a shame for him. Wouldn’t want him to change playing style but I did wonder if there was something in somebody elses comment about him learning to ride challenges better. Hazard in particular gets taken out a lot and for the most part doesn’t hurt himself. I wonder if that’s down to hazard actively drawing fouls (and therefore anticipating them) compared to Wilshire who just wants to make something happen. Maybe Hazard just eats more Calcium Santoz
Great point re: Hazard. He seems to know it’s coming so gets his body in a position where it can’t be hurt, whereas Jack throws every limb in front of the ball.
He uses anticipation. He throws himself down before they get a chance to give him a proper kicking.
I don’t watch the games of England but truly it’s time to stop saying Jack has an enormous talent… He had time to prove it last season with three months as n°10 thanks to Wenger, putting then Özil on the left and Cazorla on the bench. We saw what happened! Arsenal was playing bad, losing, but everybody was focusing on hating Özil.
Wilshere out, Arsenal played better. I feel sorry for him, no doubt, but don’t see him better as he actually is. Or i could pretend i have myself a tremendous talent while never showing it.
I don’t understand why it always has to be player A is shit or Player B is shit, when the more realistic and feasible scenario is that the chemistry and how to adapt to each other’s style never got established.

How come you’re the only person who thinks we started playing better in the second half of the season because Wilshere was out? Everybody else seems to think it was because we recalled Coquelin from his loan when Ramsey got injured and that his presence as DM improved our play.

I for one am confident that Jack can overcome this. Seems to be just unlucky picking up different injuries, rather than it being one recurring injury that he can’t overcome. Bad luck can’t last forever. It’ll be a further test of his character to come back stronger but he has the right attitude to cope I think. Maybe it will help him to mature further, which is the one think I feel he needs to accomplish his potential. I love Jack, really concerned for him tho, during his last rehab last season in an interview he seemed really down and on the verge of welling up over talking about it, which wasn’t great. I just want him to succeed so much
