Wenger: We’re disappointed and guilty

Arsene Wenger admits he and his side feel guilty for dropping more points after a demoralising goalless draw against Southampton.

Ronald Koeman’s side were penned in for much of the second half as Arsenal created a host of clear-cut opportunities but a combination of woeful finishing, coupled with fine stops by Saints’ keeper Fraser Forster saw the visitors escape with a point.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Wenger couldn’t hide his disappointment on a night when Arsenal dropped to fourth in the table, five points behind leaders Leicester.

“The frustration is shared [with the fans]. We put the energy level in, we created the chances. I cannot fault [the players] on that front.

“We created quality chances, it’s difficult to find somebody in our team who had no chance [to score]. That’s why we feel guilty tonight.

“It’s not only luck [why we don’t score]. I don’t believe much in luck. We created the chances and we wanted to finish [off] the game.

“We feel disappointed and guilty as well. A game like that, where you create chances, you want to win.

“If you don’t create chances you worry. Finishing is a bit cyclic, but we had enough chances to win this game. Their keeper kept them in it as well.”

Asked whether the Gunners could have done anything more to win the game, the boss remarked deadpan: “Yes, finish better.”

“You have always to think your opponent will play well and despite that still score,” he continued.

“The chances we created were of good enough quality to finish the game. We had them at our feet, in the air, on headers, on the volley. We had all kinds of chances.

“It looked like it would come and come and come…but in the end sometimes you lose these games.”

On whether his side’s current form is a case of ‘same old Arsenal’ – a criticism that they are faltering under pressure when they should be consolidating their title credentials – Wenger retorted:

“I don’t know why you say, ‘same old Arsenal,’ for twenty years we have been at the top of the Premier League. In recent years we have not been in a position , certainly not last year, to win the Championship.

“At the moment, we have to admit we’ve dropped points and our opponents have not but we have to keep fighting and to keep believing.”

Knock knock! Who’s there?
4th place trophy…

Siserio

Didn’t Wenger blurt out those words last week? Shame!! I fully support Leicester to do the business.

otamotpuos

No, Arsene’s right. This is a game of very tight margins. They could and should have won by three today.

Gargoyle

Except, Leicester seem to be getting things right way better than us so far. But it’s ok, we don’t have all that oil money… oh, wait.

LS1914

This sounds like a pathetic excuse – but I honestly think Leceister are benefitting from playing teams who simply don’t try as hard against them as when they play against us, man city, manure.

There are such fine margins in the premier league atm it seems to me teams the difference between 100% and 90-95% makes a huge difference.

Cygan's Magical Left Foot

LOL, your Licester excuse just typical delusion.

Are you 12 year old or somthing to say Licester games are less hard that’s why they top?.

SMH

Morty

Could, should, would. We should have won againt the poorest Chelsea team for years, we should have won yesterday, we should not have conceded three against Liverpool, we should win against Stoke. We could have been 5 points clear at the top, but we are behind. At the END of the day it is not margins, it is a lack of quality.

Miranda

Don’t think it’s quality we are lacking. Wouldn’t you say Oezil, Sanchez, Kos, Monreal, practically all of them are superior to the players Koeman or Ranieri or Pochettino have at their disposal? Rather than poor quality, I’d suggest poor focus, poor organisation, poor tactics and the lack of confidence that follows from these things are a bigger part of the problem – and have been for a good 15 years. Players come and go, often rather expensive players, but the manager, and our unerring capacity to blow it, is there every year. Why no mention of Wenger’s words to the… Read more »

arseblog

It’s possible to be unhappy with the referee, but also know that missing the chances was what cost us the game. Nowhere in his post-game comments does Wenger say it was down to the referee, but he specifically mentions the fact our finishing was bad.

Storm in a teacup this tunnel story. Stuff goes on in tunnels every week, at every game, that would make all managers/refs/players look a bit daft. Don’t get hung up on this.

Miranda

Tunnel spats and press conferences are both newsworthy – the tunnel spats perhaps rather more so because in contrast to press conferences they don’t happen at every match. Naturally the clubs’ official websites never report anything that shows the manager in a bad light, which is why they aren’t very interesting reading or trustworthy sources of news. Who’d go to a PR department for entertainment or truthfulness? This, however, is a news site, not a mouthpiece of Arsenal dot com so why would it be inappropriate to give equal coverage to both events? Do you think the Telegraph or Guardian… Read more »

Mr. G

Yeah, seeing as there’s no way this sorry squad will be anywhere near the title race at the end of the season, I hope Leicester go the distance and win it. I never believed we’d win the title. The mentality is not good enough. Aside from Cech, we have no real leaders or motivators in the squad. And now look at how many points we’ve dropped where we shouldn’t have. Some of you might say ‘oh but we’re only 5 points behind’, but I say to you if we’d won the games champions should have we’d be at least 5… Read more »

The words head and nail come to mind!

The Arse in the Gamb

You ‘support Leicester to do the business’ or you pray that the Spuds will trip and fall?
Whatever the answer to that the title does not seem to be about Arsenal this year.
A couple of weeks ago we asked for Arsenal to put some daylight between us and the other top teams….careful what you wish for they now say.

Despondent

Not Ozil or Sanchez come the summer.

Third Plebeian

Absolutely. If you think Arsenal are finishing any higher than 3rd, well, you haven’t been watching this team. We can’t get results, we can’t make things happen, we get muscled off the ball far too easily, we can’t score, and Walcott plays for us. The title dream sounded nice in October, didn’t it?

Eastupper

His expression in that picture pretty well sums up how I feel

racosin

annoyed..annoyed..annoyed. and finally a little exasperated.

Stillmatic

Same old Arsenal.

Tarquin Farquar

Our midfield is terrible. Can’t control a game. Create nothing. Can’t wait for both Flamini and Ramsey to be dropped. Ramsey is being exposed as a rank average player who runs about a lot. He is quite simply not good enough folks. I know lots of you don’t want to admit it but he was as I’ve said many times on here never as bad as fans made out and equally never as good. We really miss santi and coq in there.

Crew

Ramsey is a huge threat with his runs from deep into the box but that’s his only real great ability. Well, that and his relentless running. He’s an ok passer, creator and finisher but he can’t control the midfield and in a lot of games we need that and today is a good example. Cazorla and Wilshere possess the playmaking qualities required for the role, Ramsey doesn’t.

eduardo

How was midfield a problem today, did they miss the chances that was created, 22 shots, at least half of them good chances. If ramsey should be faulted for anything today it is that he did not make his usual runs into attacking areas, and have some shots, maybe if he had we would have scored the goal that Ozil x2, Alexis x2, Campbell, Kos, Walcott, Giroud all missed tonight.
this blog has gone beyond a joke with the Ramsey bashing.

Mpls

Just bashing in general. Any time it’s not a win it turns into a shit show. I’m in agreement with you on Ramsey today- strange, predetermined re-hashed line of complaint. We kept a clean sheet, I didn’t notice poor turnovers from him, they didn’t boss us in the middle on our own end. we just didn’t put the fucking football in the goal. When we play a fast counter-attacking game we don’t bother cycling the ball around all day in our own half. We also controlled major portions of the match in the attacking 1/3. That’s something I can live… Read more »

Serge Blanco

We are on a bit of an iffy run but are only 2 behind City. I accept last night was annoying and we need to snap out of it quickly but it is hardly all over. I guarantee as the pressure mounts Spurs will fall away and so will Leicester. Still see this as us and City going to the end.

Crew

Ramsey had a few silly turnovers today, watch it again. Finishing was obviously a problem for us as well but we were very exposed in the middle not just because of Flamini but also Ramsey not retaining the ball and not creating much from the back. Well, that and Gabriel losing literally every aerial duel vs Long.

Sanchezy

Ramsey is an attacking player hence why Wenger will play him on the right wing. I think if he was partnered with Coq, Elneny, or even Arteta, we would have more control in the mildfield. Arteta and Santi control the tempo and maintain possession with accurate passing.
I think the game is won in the midfield and that’s why we lost points today. Or we can have Cavani or a world class striker to finish those few chances.

I have to agree with Fatgooner and others that Theo needs to move on.

Cygan's Magical Left Foot

Some would have you here believe Arteta is the best DM in the league let alone Ramaey.

Arsene IS the problem.

The sooner he leaves with his cult the better for OUR club.

Mpls

That’s quite the claim. I don’t know that I’ve -ever- got the notion anybody around here would suggest such a thing.

Cygan's Magical Left Foot

Of course you won’t. And also you’d thought singing no one in the summer is ok as we were covered, Arsene would win the league.

Next summer all over again.

You want to see it or not…….

Arsene IS the problem.

Still a long way to go and games to play against those around us. Leicester play city next and then us. It’s been a funny old season that I expect will go down to the wire… But with Pep arriving in the summer there is an air of ‘now or never’ about it… But if that applies to us how much more so to Leicester?!
If we don’t do it the romantic in me would enjoy them taking the title. Proper Hollywood movie story that would be in the age of global brands and oil money.

Eastupper

I hear what you say, but there’s no pressure on Leicester to win the league. We on the other hand are The Arsenal, that’s the difference

Mc1892

If someone had offered me that we’d be five points off top at the beginning of February at the end of November when we lost half our team I’d have bitten their hand off. Perspective people, all we need is not to see Flamini again this season, Coquelin come back in firing on all cylinders and mesut and alexis to hit some serious form at the same time and we’re favourites again. That said totally agree about Leicester- never would I be as happy again that we hadn’t won the league if they did! Also think people are overstating the… Read more »

One word: Deluded

I’d love to know whether other teams fans are as unbelievably fickle and quick to jump ship as ours. It’s a few bad results for Christ’s sake, get behind the team and stop bloody whining. I’ve never seen a reaction to a game as bad as this on here, really quite bizarre.

Pachvasilion

Other teams don’t have 11 years of chronic bottling under pressure to look back on. Why? Because they actually DIDN’T COLLAPSE when they needed to keep results going! They actually rendered things like referees and the efforts of their opponents completely moot and got the 3 points at the end of the day, like a proper winning side is SUPPOSED TO. Fancy that. PS: And no, I would not have bitten someone’s hand off to be 5 points off the top at the beginning of November. I would have considered it a great dissapointment, and sneezed at it. To be fair mate it’s not just one game. It started way back from the game at Anfield in my opinion. Plus it isn’t that far off, we’ve been here many times before (2008/2009, 2013/2014) where our title challenge fades away inexplicably. Having said so I enjoyed the ride before Christmas, it’s just that this has a familiar sinking feeling to it. Maybe Wenger can finally turn it around. Mark

I think even more than Coquelin returning we really need Carzola back, he is such a difference maker from that deep lying position with his ability to control possession and spring quick attacks with his long passing (with either foot), something Ramsey cannot do nearly as well. We are in real danger of continuing to slip further down the table unless we can start to score again. Must win this Sunday and at a minimum tie LC in the next match. United and WH are nipping at our tails now and any more slip ups could see us dropping out… Read more »

eduardo

seeing as utd who are five points behind us are nipping are our tail and we are five pts behind LC, are we nipping at Leicesters tail, or is there double standards at play

Mark

If we were gaining ground instead of losing ground then we’d be nipping at LC’s tail, but as it is three points out of a possible 12 while the gap between United and WH has shrunk quite a bit means they are nipping at our tails.

voldermort

Couldn’t give a fuck about finishing in the top 4 personally. It’s all about money. It’s trophy we can’t win.its a myth that players only want to go to champions league teams. Pay them enough and they would join anyone.
If dropping out the top 4 means we invest in the team in the right areas and address our failures then so be it. 4th place is not and never will be a trophy and certainly isn’t good enough for a club like arsenal.

Alexstratz

Let me translate: our attacking midfield is so good at creating chances but our forwards keep bottling it. So since finishing is cyclic, you either buy another “good enough” striker to rotate with Giroud on his goalless periods, or you buy a consistent goal scorer (Aguero, Suarez, Lewandowski level) but let’s face, none are for sale. What you don’t do is count on Walcott and Welbeck… I still believe City is our main threat but with a dozen matches left, we seriously need to stop fucking around. At this point I’m ready to sacrifice CL and hope City go through… Read more »

Excuses after excuses…enough is enough. Win the league or leave.
Don’t care what you achieved 2004-5…Leicester is showing how it should be done.
So much for “automatism” and “Team spirit” winning us the league.

Jammathon

Won the FA Cup in 2004-05. Repeated in the past two seasons.

So much for knowing your history when you meant 03-04.

Trez

Obvious i meant 03-04…how does that change the fact that Wenger has lost his mojo??

Arigoon

Would you switch our players for Leicester’s? No? Then I guess what they have, when showing us how it should be done, is probably something like “team spirit” and “automatism”.

Toby C

Er, I think most of us would have Vardy and Mahrez in the team!

Arigoon

Of course! If they had been for sale in January, they would have been great additions. However, I’d put a bet on Vardy going back to mediocre sometime next season. I really don’t think Leicester play well because somehow their players all hit their peaks at the same time. And I don’t believe Vardy and Mahrez are enough to explain their position. I think Alexis and Özil, for example, have more quality then them. They have a game plan that suits the players and they play as a unit. Speaking of cohesion.

Trez

So why can’t Wenger get us to “play as a unit”?? You can’t talk of cohesion when you keep playing Ramsey-Flamini axis despite being obvious that it does not work and can’t control the mid.
All we do is talk and talk on the media about team spirit while fucking Spuds are slowly closing the gap and now they are above us.

Arigoon

Good question Trez. I’m with you on this one. I don’t know! I was hoping he’d go for Coq and Ramsey or try Elneny and Ramsey.
But I don’t think he put Flamsey in the middle to anger you. 😉

Trez

No, Leicester are showing desire. You see what raneiri did?? he plugged the holes he felt was in an already decent team, tweaked tactics and guess what?? Their high flying. That is what dear wenger should’ve done, not give us rubbish about spreading goals and expecting theo to get close to 20 goals this season and 10-15 for santi and ozil.

Mr Robot's Nipple

There’s also the fact that Leicester are ranked 2nd from last in the injury league (which complements their title ambitions) and we are at the negative end of the injury table in the top 4…

Not to diminish our many shortcomings, but luck clearly plays its part.

If Vardy and Mahrez had suffered the same fate as Cazorla, Coquelin and Sanchez (our key players) we mightn’t be green-grassing as much.

Dan Hunter

Bollocks. You can call it luck when it happens once or twice. When it happens every fucking season, then there is a problem in mismanagement. This crow should have left at the end of his last contract on an FA cup high and brought in Pep. That is the least he could have done. Now he has to go and make sure a proper manager comes in who will challenge Pep and possibly Mourinho at Utd. For me – Simeone or Joachim Loew.

greg

He looks fucked

Brent

“Finishing is a bit cyclic”

Where was the cycle this season when the team was scoring their chances? Looking at list of results, there was a 3 game stretch in the league where 11 goals were scored with the Olympiakos clunker in the middle of that. If finishing is cyclic, then you better start that scoring cycle pretty damn soon and for longer than 3 games.

...why?

Not surprised, not angry, not sad. Just a dull ache at the pit of the stomach. Fuckin’ Arsenal…

I AM ARSENAL

Arsene gets alot wrong but i think managers bear alot of criticism when the players are out their…He cannot score the easy chances that Ozil, Giroud , Walcott and Koscielny managed to miss…All created despite having the well documented piss poor partenrship of Flamini/Ramsey..

Alexstratz

Yet he can buy a goal scorer who is better than those cited. We all know they only go from good enough (Giroud) to below average (Özil) to hopeless (Walcott) in terms of goal-scoring prowess.

Arsepedant

Yes, there are dozens of strikers out there who never miss a chance, whose teams are just begging to sell them. Which one (or two, or three, there are obviously so many) do you think we should have bought in the window? Aguero? Lewandoski? Messi? Suarez? Neymar? Ronaldo? Aubemayang? Kane? Vardy? Lukaku?

Maybe because of our constant injury crises, we should have bought all of them. I’m sure all of their clubs would have sold them to us if we’d snapped our fingers at them.

Alexstratz

Anyone decent is better than a season-long injured Welbeck (we knew!!!) and the current Walcott which I’m sure Wenger was aware of. At least it takes the pressure off Giroud so he can rest and score consistently.

bigboned

Why do we hear this invalid argument time after time? “Who should we have bought?” Why are we paying Wenger and his massive scout team millions of pounds every year? Is it so, they can tell us “There’s no player in the world that can improve Arsenal?” Or are we paying them to find the improvement that a fan like you and me can’t spot. When you first heard about Koscielny, did you think he could improve us? I know, I didn’t. But, he turned out to be great signing and arguably one of the best defenders in PL. If… Read more »

gooner bee

Redsy

To be honest I always felt if we came out the end of this month no more than 4 points behind Manchester city we would win the league as soon as returning players gel again I don’t think any different now.
Our run of games after suggests we can do it.

Trez

Yeah just like our run games suggested we’d beat Norwich, West Brom and Spuds in November or how it also suggested we’d beat liverpool, southampton and stoke as well??
Face it this team is too inconsistent to win the league.

london

I’d like to see Coquelin alongside Elneny in central midfield. In my opinion, Ramsey leaves us too exposed and we end up playing a back 5 and a front 5. I’d play Ramsey on the right and drop Campbell and keep the rest of the team as it is.

He's got no hair but we don't care...

My mighty fellow Gooners, those of you who are blind and deluded that our manager, the once great and revolutionary manager in premier league history, how on earth do you still think he must stay in place. How can you defend him? PLEASE don’t spout off about what he’s done for the club, WE ALL KNOW THIS! it’s about the now and the future.

At the game too.We really only played like we could for a 30 minute spell after half time. The first half no body showed the urgency required and as for the first ten minutes it was like we were playing a testimonial allowing Southampton to settle into the game with no pressure at all. Not happy, not sad just… I guess content with that same fact, we are just about in top 4, but reality is, that other teams are catching up with us in the sense of squad quality, look at Leicester, Tottenham, I’m very concerned about Stoke for next season, they will be a force next year. Tactics is also somethings that needs addressing , why did neny not play?

The dreaded 4th place?! …..oh my God not again, followed by Wenger’s excuses and useless reasons for missing out on the trophy. Hope this is a dream!

I bet you, Wenger will stick to this formation untill Santi comes back, and Elneney who iwas a still think was a blind signing like squilachi and kalstrum (He is not in the Basel CL squad list! meaning was worse than the subs?!) we will never get to know good or bad he is just Coz AW can’t change tactics

Can we get Akpom back, let Hull have Wally. That’s not an affectionate nickname.

I must admit that i decided to not post any comment here last night after the game, as i was still seething with frustration, anger and utter deject at both the performance and the result. Yesterday, more than ever, did i feel that it might once again be like the past seasons and that is not a good feeling to have, especially when the season promised so much more. Looking back, with a much calmer mindset, i definitely do not think that throwing Wenger out, is the answer as no manager sends a team out there to lose. A couple… Read more »

I know there are still 10 plus games to go but Wenger is running out of time.
If he aint careful he could scrape for 4th. Then what?
I don’t know.If he has any dignity and Arsenal cant get win the epl or
cant even finish 4th,he shd in all honesty ,go..
So its not surprising he had a scrap with Koeman.

Oooh Ahhh Ray Parlour!

Panickers stop panicking please!!! It’s still only February & things change quicky as we have seen at first hand, look up & not behind us. Last night was really frustrating & the added fact that Spurs being above us makes me feel extremely impatient for the next game, but I’m sure the team feel this as much as anyone & are desperate to get things right. We have proven winners in this squad now & this is where it will show, Cech, Alexis & Ozil won’t just flake out & bottle it they’re proven winners. Agreed, the run we are… Read more »

I don’t know why this bashing. These things happen in sports, team played really well today. I saw a subdued player like Ozil all charged up and shouting. But believe me sometimes things don’t work out doesn’t matter how hard you try and this game was one of them.

Southampton where shitting their pants they saved the game some how. This Arsenal team is winning the league. Mark my words and save this screenshot.

As is usual Wenger has a spat with Koeman. I aint surprised. Arsenal shd move on and aim for a win over Bournemouth. Failure to win could be hugely unsettling. After a good run its only natural Arsenal are due a blip. Hopefully they can start another winning run and soon. Wenger seems to be preparing for the future when this season is so important and could finally win the epl..That’s why he is hoping to sigh Chilwell next season. Anything can happen from now . He could be asked to go. He shd have bought some quality guys but… Read more »

‘Should’, not ‘shd’, thanks 😉

I was there last night and it was so disappointing… we seem to make a habit of making things difficult for ourselves and that really was a game we had to win, given that our competitors are winning and we have some difficult games coming up. But I guess we need to try to think positive as there’s still a long way to go. I also worry that the current squad has gaping holes – or even chasms! I also think we can’t expect Ozil and Sanchez to do it all – they need better forwards to feed to. Walcott… Read more »

Watched the game, crinched, got ill today and started reading some of the comments. I gotta say, as much as I have lost hope for winning the league and believing in Arsene and his team, us fans surely are the worst bunch. The amount of scapegoating, bickering, bitterness and opiniated Fifa footballmanager personalities makes me even more ill. I’m as dissapointed by the result and not blind to our frailties but surely no other club has this many fans loosing perpespective and class come february.

Koeman does a good job vs Wenger…We created very well but failed to finish…We need that calming yet incisive Cazorlalike/Artetalike midfield presence…The league is more evenly matched than ever and every team will experience bumps….Spuds are for real, really freakin good….So are we…COYG!

Perspective: Koeman said “Not in 1.5 years at Southampton has a team created the number of chances that Arsenal did last night”
