Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka says he’s pleased that his club have managed to sign Calum Chambers on loan from Arsenal.
The Spaniard revealed that the 21 year old had other options – including offers from abroad – but chose to go Boro to play regularly and develop.
Speaking the official Boro website, Karanka, a former centre-half himself, said, “I’m really pleased. It’s a position where we’ve been working towards bringing the right player in.
“We haven’t been in a hurry because Calum was the player we were waiting for, and he’s going to help us a lot.
“I’d like to say thank you to him because we know he had another offer, but he wanted to come here. That’s important and we’re looking forward to working with him.”
Meanwhile, there was the obligatory ‘delighted to be here’ Tweet from the Arsenal man:
Pleased to sign on loan for @Boro. Excited about the season ahead and can't wait to get working ???⚪ pic.twitter.com/QePBCff1Cf

On paper this is a good move for both parties, let’s hope it works out.
well I’ve never had a reason to watch Middlesbrough before (except when we’ve played then) but I guess I’ll catch a game or two now, hopefully this will work out for everyone (except John Terry)
Nice to see Karanka thank Calum publicly for choosing Boro…
You’d come back a better player, son, I’m sure.
Not sure why the manager lost faith in him. Haven’t been overly impressed with Holding. Hopefully these two can be the centre of our defence in years to come.
he’s looked poor of late, think lack of playing time is a big part of it, Holding has looked impressive to me but give it a year and i’m sure he’ll be a target of unhappiness
Not being critical of holding. To me its just like the Sanogo situation, thrust into starting XI when clearly not ready due to lack of alternatives. You can thumb this down too, i couldn’t care less 😉
And for Chambers are you basing this off the Liverpool match? All young players have ups and downs Wenger just hasn’t given him the same trust he gave Senderos, Djourou et al.
Which goes to show that maybe Wenger does change his habits for the good of the team after all. Also that is 2 summers in the last 3 where we spent around 100m.
They play good football here. This is a good developmental loan move for Calum if he gets enough playing time in the first team.
Good luck Calum hope the loan is a good one for you, will look forward to seeing you in an arsenal shirt again
Good luck to him. I really hope it works out for him. since he lacks height and pace think he needs to bulk up a bit to compensate if he’s ever going to make it at Arsenal.
Calum Chambers is a smidge over 6′. The average height for British men is 5′ 10″.
How exactly does Chambers “lack height”?
Are you sure you haven’t confused him with Santi Cazorla?
Good stuff, good luck, see you when your older.
All sounds positive. Hopefully he will get plenty of game time.
Great move. Middlesbrough already looking the potential surprise package of the season and if Chambers can get game time I’m sure he’ll develop. Karanka himself was a former assistant to the special asshole I’m sure he knows a thing or two about defending.
I think he should play at Rback like during his impressive spell at Soton.
That said, if he is going to develop as a Cback, then probably better to make mistakes at Boro and learn from them.;)
Good considered choice by Wenger to have him under Karanka’s tutelage.
Disagree. He’s not agile enough, or have rapid enough acceleration to be a top level full-back as far as I can see. He is fast when he gets going and has a good physique for playing centrally. It’s his positioning/decision-making that lets him down, which I’d hope he could improve under a coach with a more defensively focussed mindset.
I have to say the potential is there for sure. He has a great leaping and heading ability for someone his height. But sometimes he will just do the ‘odd stuff’
Hope he will come back stronger and better. ✌
Really hope he gets playing time!! League games not just Cups …
