Martinez has potential to be Arsenal Number 1

Arsene Wenger says that Emi Martinez has the potential to make it as the club’s number 1 keeper, after the Argentine signed a new deal this week.

He’s now 24 and has had some hit and miss loan spells over the last few seasons, but that’s still pretty young in the life of a goalkeeper, and Wenger says with time and patience he could be the man between the sticks for the Gunners.

“He’s our No 3 at the moment but he has the potential to become No 1,” he said. “That’s why we extended his contract.

“He learns a lot at the moment with Petr Cech and David Ospina. For me he’s certainly the future goalkeeper at Arsenal. The problem in his job is you have to be patient.

|When you see that Petr Cech is 34 and still play … when you’re a young goalkeeper you need to be patient.”

Martinez will get his third run-out of the season on Wednesday night when we face Southampton in the EFL Cup, a game which might also mark the return of Lucas Perez.

Good on the lad. He’s been silently improving. From the horror shows of reading 7-5, he’s developed a lot. Watched a few games when he was out on loan at Wolves, he looked very composed and commanding. Hopefully he keeps at it, and he can learn from two of the very best in Cech and Ospina

So Szczęsny has no future with Arsenal?

He wasn’t patient enough. He is not learning from Cech and competing with Ospina. This doesn’t mean that he has no future with Arsenal; he could be our backup keeper!

It’s funny really because a lot of people really rate Szczesny, and Wenger showed a lot of faith in him. I wonder what changed

Fee Arsenal

Apparently the smoking in the shower after that painful loss vs Southampton (the first PL fixture of 2015) did it for Szczesny

Come on!

Or Wenger was asked about Martinez so he politely answered.

It certainly suggests to be the case. Reading the bit about the pecking order made me automatically assume Wenger sees no future here for Szczęsny, as he’s usually quite prone to reminding us of depth in the squad and out on loan.

This was supposed to be a reply to Roswelch.

That’s good.

Tbh i dont see him becoming our nr. 1, i do think hes a goid goalkeeper. But he’l have to wait for Cech to retire/move on n then overtake Ospina first (who is what, 26-27?), n thats if Sceszny doesnt decide to stay and fight it out too. Say Cech for this season and next, then Ospina for a few years if form n quality permit ofcourse. Emi could be hitting 30 by the time he gets a look in. Thoughts?

For a goalkeeper, 30 like 24. Even in their late 30s, so many keeper play so well (Kahn, Buffon, etc). I am just happy that once Cech retires, our goal keeping will be in “good hands”.

Also, I like Matt Macey’s humongousness.

I think we will certainly sell either Ospina or Szczesny next summer. Both will have clubs bidding for them, so we should get a reasonable fee. The unsold one will take up the Ospina role of this season.

The way things are poised, I doubt Szczesny will play for Arsenal again (unless we sign him up again in the future), and will be sold next summer.
