Fischer: we’ll need a bit of luck against Arsenal

FC Basel coach Urs Fischer says his side will have to play at their best if they’re to take anything from tonight’s game with Arsenal, and admits they may need a little bit of luck along the way too.

Sitting bottom of the group, the Swiss side need a point and a Ludogorets defeat to give them Europa League football, and having just seen Arsenal demolish West Ham 5-1, he knows it’s going to be uphill task.

“I think we’ve played well so far but of course if we want to get anything from this game we’re going to have to be at our best,” he said.

“We certainly can’t make the same kind of mistakes we made at the weekend. If we can play at our best we can get a result, but we need a bit of luck too.

“I think Arsenal will put out their best side. They are very efficient. I watched them again at the weekend; they were always in control and then really turned it on.

“They’re very dangerous going forward. We need a point and I’m sure PSG will do everything they can to win the group in the other game.”

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger says he’s yet to decide how much, if at all, he’ll rotate his side, but is targetting the three points and after all it’s a bit que sera, sera.

“Sometimes I think that when a guy is doing well it’s more dangerous to stop him than keep him going,” he said.

“I haven’t decided on my team yet – I have another 24 hours to decide – but my main priority is to win. We want to win the game, do our job, and you never know what happens in Paris.

“It doesn’t really look like a problem finishing second. We’ll see what happens with the final results, but it looks quite even.

“The advantage of finishing first is that you play the second leg at home, and in extra time you play an extra 30 minutes at home.”

Careful. He’s a fischerman.

Given our away form, maybe we should hope for Arsenal and PSG wins tonight.

Lets hope Arse(ne) and Arse(nal) make an arse of Urs.

Well Urs, if we play like we did against West Ham, you will need more than luck. Perhaps divine intervention. If we play like we did against Man Utd, you will only need 6 one legged hobbits and a stick to beat us.

PeteyB

I like how this implies that The ManUre are worse than (or at least only as good as) the 6 one legged hobbits.

and a stick…

FrankTheTank

Well who isnt steamrolling West Ham these days? I reckon my Sunday league team would have a fair chance at getting a result vs that lot this season. But yes, Basel still need some luck and the margins on their side to beat us. But I think the West Ham game told us alot more about their general form and alot less about ours, Cause they we’re absolutely shite which in turn made us look alot better than we probably are.

Alex

Is someone playing twice in 7 days rather than three times really “stopping him” ?

badaab

Alexis is a workaholic, and Arsene is an enabler.
