Giroud hints that new contract will be signed soon

Olivier Giroud has denied that he’s already signed a new contract with the club, but has hinted that he’s not far away from putting pen to paper.

The 30 year old started just his first Premier League game of the season in the 1-0 win over West Brom, and despite not playing much seems ready to extend his stay at the club he joined in 2012.

“People have been saying I have signed a new contract,” he said. “It is not true but may be soon.”

He also spoke about a campaign which has been challenging for him on a personal level. Having lost in the final of Euro 2016, he came back late, Alexis took his chance up front, and he had to deal with an injury which cost him 6 weeks of competition.

He sounded sanguine enough, but there was certainly an undertone of frustration.

“I was speaking with the boss, we had a couple of discussions together and he explained to me why I hadn’t played too much until here,” he said.

“I came back a bit late from the Euros and it was nice for my body because I could rest but not good for me because the team was doing well and another striker was doing well up front,” he said.

“This season has been difficult because also I was injured for a month and a half, so it hasn’t been easy. Today I played, I tried to give everything for the team and hopefully things will change for me.

“But as long as the team is getting better I am happy and I am part of the club since five years and I want to carry on.

“But we have to see, I need more time of games but we will see in the future. The best thing is to keep within distance of Chelsea.”

Top man. Ideal squad member

SG_Gooner

guys, go see the goal clip again, sanchez kicked giroud’s ass

sneaky fella

Bai Blagoi

He nailed it

Gudang Pelor

I saw that, and l like it. The similar gesture when giroud scored against (forget), alexis would climb on giroud back. Looks cute since giroud is a giant specimen whilst alexis is a pint size maverick. He didnt seem to be affected with alexis on his back.

Anonymarse

Perhaps they could be more effective if they played like that

Lord Nicki B

I’d go with the flip. Alexis’ legs and Olli’s head.

Iceberg10

Massively underrated. His critics have been strangely quiet since the weekend game.

David C

top option off the bench and a decent rotational player against big teams that sit back. he has to accept that he’s not in the starting 11 each game, but he could play a role on this team for at least a few more years.

Possession

Olivier is a top man and a top striker. He does not fit into our best 11 with the style and pace that we prefer to play with as we all know but what a player to bring on late in tight games against bus parkers. He’s a vital part of our squad and I’m really pleased he’s staying.

Santa Cazorla

Best Plan B ever.

The Gooner7

Haven’t seen anyone as loyal as Big Oli.
Even though people critsize him, he gives 100 percent to the team.
Happy that he’s signing a new contract.

Congested Hull city defense, Sanogo, Giroud with the backhill, Ramsey with the first time shot and scorrrreess!!!!
We love you HFB

Goontang

Top lad. Top gooner. Lets hope he gets a good run of games and goals.
Think we need his ariel presence at both ends against palace.

onenil

How many points has he got us this season already? And that’s as sub for a team who don’t like to cross it.
Is there another player in the league who could have scored that goal while being wrestled by the defender?
He may not fit our current style, but we need him, and if we give him the service (as Ozil did) he will score those vital late goals.

Georgycharles

I really hope OG does extend his contract but looking at what he said, the last sentence in particular, I think his words were quite guarded and carefully chosen. The interpretation could be that whilst he’d like to sign, he first needs to see how things go in the games ahead, in order to see how much playing time he gets.

HIs game isn’t based on pace. Many people tend not to give him credit for what he is. Aside from strength in the air, he is also excellent at the first touch lay off (wall passes/give and goes). His near post finish is also immaculate. IN fact I’d go as far as to say he is a bit of an artist when it comes to his finishing at times. PLus he is/has been one of our most effective strikers ever in terms of goals per games played. Currently we have 4 striker options. Aside from Giroud there is the exciting… Read more »
