Wenger provides confusing Danny Welbeck update

Danny Welbeck was forced off the pitch during the 0-0 draw with Chelsea this afternoon after suffering a groin strain.

The England international had been hard working and busy throughout, but the last thing he needs is another big injury problem having missed so much football over the last couple of seasons.

Hopefully it’s not too bad, and that’s what Arsene Wenger appeared to saying after the game, although his update was a bit confusing.

Asked about the striker after the game, he said, “He has a groin problem. I don’t know how severe it is but it looks like a ‘good’ groin problem, not an easy one.”

So, we assume it’s an uncomplicated groin strain, but what does he mean by not an ‘easy’ one? Is it easy in that it’s so bad it’s easy to say how long he’ll be out for, or something else?

I guess we’ll find out soon enough, but fingers crossed for Welbeck because it’d be a shame if he were sidelined for any sustained period.

To quote a well known Author..

Nobody gives a fish’s tit if you’re the first to comment on an article.

bidOnLard

Why did it get approved in the first place?

Neder

4… months I mean. Knowing poor Danny’s injury record I mean.

Michael Bolton Wanderers

Well he is a spy after all

adriano

Hey! I did that only once in my life and it was a terrible mistake. It’s been over a year, let me be free again!

Gun4Gun

Lmao

Martin

Not even a comment. Pure childishness

C.B.

Can’t anyone doing this be blocked?

Crash Fistfight

Can’t people just ignore these posts (and if they’re that bothered, down-vote them so that they disappear)? Seems like something very trivial to get worked up about (as stupidly banal as typing ‘first’ is).

Flummoxed

Especially since in the arses thus is kind of a “thing”. On blog posts it’s all “well in” and “good one”. I don’t understand why everyone hates it so much here. I’m not fond of it, it seems silly, but no reason to get all bent out of shape or a reason to have the comment moderated.

Lack of Perspective

Arse in general is a different dimension

goongot

sanchez’s reaction for ramsey-laca chance was so satisfying.Love the man he could have sulked like van djik and coutinho but he is different class altogether.

Alex

You’ve already forgotten how he smiled when Arsenal lost against Bayern and Liverpool?

PB70

Yes

Anonymarse

Performances like that are probably the main reason why he wants to leave, which to be fair I can understand …

Anonymarse

I would leave myself sometimes, if that were an option …

adriano

All match I was texting my friends saying I was a Liverpoop supporter now. I was joking of course but we were being absolutely ripped apart. There were some serious moments there where i wondered if i could start following a second club, low-key.

Goonerink

I think it’s his ego.
‘should of kept me on’
‘ha! See I would have scored that. Play me!’

Which in a player of his calibre is both common and not always detrimental.
I mean if it’s a player of his calibre he should be playing, and only when he isn’t for some reason the negatives come out.
I would love to say after today’s performance replacing him wouldn’t be hard. But that’s forgetting Thursdays beauty and the masses he has scored for us so far.

Anonymarse

I think we would be ok without him, particularly if we signed a quality replacement

Better to have him than not, and better for City to not have him

Mongolian Gooner

My reading of his reaction was completely different. Everybody on the bench was on their feet anticipating the goal, buzzing. Sanchez was smiling sure but that was most likely because we were looking quite good going forward, we played positively. Don’t understand all these people saying he was being a psycho

Ion-forte

For once someone who understands it differently.Just told my brother same thing as you have just said.I saw a positive and encouraging reaction not a negative one

Anonymarse

At the time he looked like he wanted us to score

Non Flying dutchman

nothing malign in his reaction there…. though not sure about his slapping the arm of the back up goalkeeper with such severity

adriano

Was anyone debating this? I thought the post was about how he showed a great reaction today and the only negative reactions were during the Bayern and L’poop games. Today he was undoubtedly excited that we almost scored and showed some awesome team character.

Paul

Anyone count the amount of times he gave the ball away when he came on? No, thought not. The bloke is a liability!

Martin

Lucky goal the liability scored against Cologne.

adriano

None of that matters. You saw what he did in the Cologne match.
How many times has Alexis came off the bench in his European career? He’s never going to make his fullest contributions that way. He can give the ball away a bunch today, but it’s not the time to criticize that.

Alexisshorts

Alexis looked pretty happy and involved when Ramsey almost scored. Funny that the press always look to manipulate these moments to suit their narrative. When we lost to Liverpool it was hard not to know whether to laugh or cry so I don’t blame him for that.

adriano

Did the press try and colour that badly? I didn’t see much post-match stuff except from Sky.
I’m sure that was pretty obvious to everyone how much he cares about the team and was excited we nearly scored. There didn’t seem to be any grey areas in that scene..

Martin

How do you know what he was smiling at ? Stupid comment

Tony Andreas

I smiled too! It’s great to see Arsenal lose!

Paul

I don’t think him laughing about it was satisfying at all. Please someone post it from the interweb? Giroud and Ospina were gutted and he was laughing…

sixteen swans

Post Hoc Ergo fucking poxy Propter Hoc.

Looney

Did you watch it closely… The guy was laughing at the missed chance… Giroud had the perfect response though for someone who is a direct competitor. Such passion from Giroud. He wears his heart on the badge

Dave M

Credit to you for even wasting breath on comments like that Andrew

Crash Fistfight

I thought he was laughing because he was enjoying himself. I assume he just enjoys watching football, rather than being in agonising fear over the result like a lot of us fans.

Think about times when we’re winning comfortably and miss a chance like that – do you honestly wring your hands and/or snarl because we’ve missed a chance or do you turn to your mate next to you and say “did you see that?” in the same way Alexis did?

adriano

I thought that was pretty dope to see. Nothing but a pro, and he will never leave any club with a tarnished character.

GYWE

To be fair Welbeck is a confusing player

Anonymarse

and Wenger is a confusing manager

Cagooner

I read that quote as “it’s a good and proper groin injury”. I.e. It’s quite bad. Really hope I’m wrong tho as Welbz has been key to this little run we’re on.

Anonymarse

Maybe it’s a good bad one

ArsenAlan

He raised his hand straight away, never a good sign. Hopefully he recovers quickly as he had started to score goals.

A different George

Unfortunately, I think that’s exactly right–think of using “bon” as an adjective in French in that context. Wenger was saying “it’s a real one, not the easy kind.”

adriano

That had to be what he meant. That was my take, straight-away, at least.

Liebenrood

The only “good” groin strain is achieved in the sack, not on the pitch.

christophe royer

Unfortunately, I think it is possibly one of these occasions when Wenger directly translates from French to English as he speaks. “Une bonne blessure”, if translated literally would be “a good injury” but in fact means “a serious injury” in French.

LEFT08

Just saw the video of AW. I think he means to say that it looks like a serious injury. Hope I’m wrong.

andre santos

just when he was on a good run of games

Rocky Mountain Gooner

The man is like Michael Scott off of the office. “It’s a secret jim. You wouldn’t understand” well is it a secret or I wouldn’t understand???

santori

The hard work was key today because they were very active trying to close us down and deny space. Lacazette struggled today likely unused to the intensity. I expect he will take away great lessons from today. BUT Danny, Iwobi and (later Elneny) all included to ensure we kept up the chase. Every man counts in these sort of competitions. We may have benefited from Ozil’s vision to unlcok them further but the risk is we may have been a little more exposed defensively. With Ramsey more discipline (he tends to be in the ‘big games’) and Iwobi providing closer… Read more »

Good thoughts. As for Mustafi, I think Wenger wants to make players happy in their lives (if a player has class and acts like a proper decent man, then why not?), and if they won’t be happy at Arsenal then he will likely try and facilitate a move. In this case, he would’ve wanted to find a replacement a the last minute and I think that proved too difficult. January window this could be a thing though, especially if we’ve made the agreements already. I’m sure he likes Mustafi but it’s also clear that he’s not irreplaceable like Kos. Once… Read more »

adriano

And I consider Monreal a CB for all intents and purposes. A first-choice one as well, along with Kos. Everyone else falls into rank behind those two.

santori

I think Wenger is using the word “good’ like some people use the word “bad’ as to mean good …the word craftsman that he is.

Matt

Today gave us a glimpse of Arsenal without Ozil and Sanchez in the starting line-up.
Quality players that they both are it still shows that with hard work, Tactical awareness and good defending we are a match for the champions.

adriano

Well-put. And now think about this, Wilshere and Xhaka in the middle with Rambo pushed right up behind Lacazette in a completely free role. He can be everywhere at once, and probably get back that wonder-goal touch from a few seasons back.
Welbeck or Iwobi could play up with Lacazette and Rambo, but if we sell Sanchez we’d be talking about Lemar or Draxler behing involved too.
I don’t think we’ll be in too bad of shape at all.

momozemio

(in french) it looks like he wanted to say that his problem was a tough one. When you say “j’ai pris une bonne cuite”…”bonne” means litterally “good” but there this can be translate as “I was severely drunk”…
In other words, I’m quite sure it’s a bad one.
Good Lucky Danny !

Ricardo

…with Arsenal players, it usually means it is not an easy one to deal with.History says that if the injury is supposed to last 3 months, with an Arsenal player it will be 2 years.

Looney

In fact, I strongly believe that part of the reason why we had such a spirited performance was because the other players wanted to show that too much emphasis is being put on the 2 contract rebels. They wanted to prove they aren’t useless without them. For a moment, when Bellerin committed that late foul, I thought I was watching Athletico. And on the strength of this performance, they have made a point. Team ethics often beat individual performances.

Leon

Wenger and confusion – in the same sentence?
That aside, good to avoid defeat today with an earned draw.
Lets hope we can get some good results with the “easier” run of games coming up and build some momentum.
We really do need champions league football next season – Sanchez will leave but we need to attract a top quality replacement and CL football will help with that..

Osk

We had this thing last year with wenger after James from gunnerblog asked him a question about a player. It’s definitely lost in translation from French I think he means similar to the American ‘he’s hurt himself good there’ when he uses the word ‘good.’

Frenchy Arsenal

Wenger’s comment on Welbeck’s injury is a literal translation from French I think:

It does mean that it is a severe injury.

In French you might say ‘C’est une “bonne”
cicatrice que tu as’ >> literal translation ‘It’s a “Good” scar you have’, “good” in this case equals “major”.

shmokin\'em

i think he means He’s done his groin good an proper an its not a simple one

Lord Bendnter

“He has a groin. Problem?”
“I don’t know how severe it is but it looks like he has a good groin. Problem?”
“Not an easy one!”

Neil #2

I like Wellbeck, but I feel like we have had too many key players who work hard, but who lack final product, and who constantly struggle with injuries (the Ox, Walcott to name just two). I don’t know if it’s a question of our style of play or the type of player we bring in….

Aleksander Włodarz

It didn’t look ‘good’ to me and i had a hernia op some time ago …hope Danny’s alright as he’s a really positive force of nature

Font

The man of the match was wenger today.

Mesut Ozzle

Honestly, one of our most important players. Welbeck and Iwobi were so important to our gameplan today and we dropped a bit when they went off, I think. Will be gutted if he’s out for a while.

Matt

It could be that – as is often the case with Wenger – it is simply a calque of a French expression that makes his speech ambiguous or poetic. “Une bonne blessure” or “un bon claquage” could be translated literally as “a good injury” or “a good strain” but it actually means “a serious injury/strain”

Christopher Sam

eh! you know, i tell you as well i am Arsene Wenger, the manager of this club, and that is not an easy one!

Crash Fistfight

Telegraph reporting it’s a potential groin tear (ouch!). Anyone know the typical recovery time for that?
