Chambers: We were up for the fight

After Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, Calum Chambers and Danny Welbeck faced the Sky Sports cameras.

Here’s what the pair had to say…

__

On the performance…

CC: We’re very pleased, it’s a good result. We were strong at the back and it was a good defensive display. I thought the boys dug in. As you said, it’s a good result for us.

On the VAR being called upon after a coming together with Fabregas…

DW: I didn’t know it was for that incident. I knew I’d clearly got the ball so I wasn’t worried at all. I could see him [the referee] talking to someone in his ear but I knew that I got the ball clearly. I wasn’t worried.

CC: You’re aware [of what’s going on], you can see the referee talking in his ear. It’s one of those things, we’ve got to get used to it.

On showing grit that was lacking at the weekend in the FA Cup…

CC: We showed grit today. As I said earlier, I thought we dug in deep. It was a good display from the whole team. That’s the pleasing thing for us.

On the performance being similar to the league 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge…

DW: Yeah, it’s down to the manager, he does the tactics rolling into each game. One I get on the pitch I want to give 100 percent. Today we put in a great defensive performance and we tried to nick a goal. We look forward to the second leg now. First, we’ve got the Premier League game [against Bournemouth] at the weekend.

On penalties being the only thing separating Arsenal and Chelse after four games this season…

CC: We’ve played Chelsea a lot recently. We know how they play, they know how we play. We’ve got to be ready for it. It’s always a tough game. Tonight I thought we were ready for it and up for the fight. We’ve got to go into the second leg like that as well.

Not interested in the said fight. What I am interested in is to tell Wenger to use this transfer window to bring in players that will strenghten Arsenal as a team. Let Sanchez and Ozi go. Just sell them off! And bring in players.I mean reliable ones. There are some very good players out there: the likes of Leon G; Thomas L; Nibir F; Jonny E; and so on. Get us a world class defensive mid fielder and lets put Sanchez and Co to shame that we can do without them.

Liverpool have? Salah, ox, Van Dijk, Keita. All the positions we need and they gone out and done it within 12 months. Problem is we aren’t getting 140 mil for the best assist maker in the league for the last 3 seasons in Ozil, a world cup winner with many more honors, like Liverpool have for Coutinho, a player who’s won very little. Sanchez is going for a free too. Bad business, but who expects them to stay when they havent been complimented with any top class talent. We only just signed Lacazette…and they have been here 5 years!

Well done Calum. Well done Rob. Instead of cower or lose confidence, they improved and bounced back. better awareness and decision making by the pair. Mustafi also in with some critical blocks today. We were a bit blunt going forward. Midfield got cautious second half and lost impetus without the direction of Jack. Shows our fragility in the engine room at the moment with Coquelin sold Lacazette could have been sharper too. Some of the alternates do not inspire confidence. Welbeck also particularly clueless but at least he did a bit of defending. But back 3 decent today. Hopefully Koscielny… Read more »

Lacazette was ill, Coquelin didn’t really add a great deal to our ‘engine room’ other than being another body. It seems to me that AW wants to ‘not lose’ these games as opposed to trying to win them, so getting them back to our place at 0-0 was probably the goal.

Bye bye Alexis and the cocq. One game from Wembley. Again. Gutsy. Rambo back. Ozil. Giriud.? Lk. Lemar …
