Report: Newcastle United 2-1 Arsenal (inc. goals)

Starting XI: Cech, Chambers, Mustafi, Holding, Monreal, Elneny, Xhaka, Willock, Iwobi, Aubameyang, Lacazette

Subs: Ospina, Maitland-Niles, Mertesacker, Kolasinac, Nelson, Welbeck, Nketiah

__

Newcastle United bounced back from Alexandre Lacazette’s early goal to beat Arsenal 2-1 as the Gunners terrible form on the road continued.

The two teams went into the break level after Ayoze Perez cancelled out the France international’s volley and it was the home side who found a winner when Matt Ritchie slotted past Petr Cech on 68 minutes.

The Gunner remain in sixth position in the Premier League but the gap on Burnley behind us is down to two points.

First half

Arsenal arrived at St James Park looking to register their first away points of 2018. This year’s four previous defeats at Bournemouth, Swansea, Sp*rs and Brighton inflicted irreparable damage on our top four chances, however, it’s fair to say the mood has changed a bit since the early March trip to the AMEX. A seven-game unbeaten run has steadied the ship and seen us qualify for the Europa League semi-finals.

With the focus very much on Europe, rotation in the Premier League has been the norm. Having handed Reiss Nelson a first Premier League start last weekend, it was Joe Willock who got the nod for a full debut this time. The 18-year-old started in midfield in front of Mohamed Elneny and the returning Granit Xhaka. In attack, Iwobi and Aubemeyang flanked Lacazette. At the back, the boss brought in Holding and Chambers as he rested Koscielny and Bellerin.

While it was far from our strongest line-up, we looked sharp in possession from the off. The first chance fell to Lacazette who rushed and effort on 4 minutes and saw the ball dribble wide.

In response, Kenedy, on loan from Chelsea, tried his luck with a longe range drive that Cech collected with minimal fuss. Not long after the Brazilian left Lacazette in a crumpled heap with a horrible challenge on the Frenchman’s ankle. He didn’t even get a caution.

The former Lyon man took the best possible revenge by breaking the deadlock almost immediately. After a spell playing the ball across the backline, Mustafi launched a great ball from the halfway line over the top for Aubameyang. The Gabon striker, operating on the left flank, controlled, crossed to the far post and Lacazette volleyed home from a tight angle. It was a lovely goal. (1-0)

Arsenal looked in the mood and from our next attack we should have had a penalty. Aubameyang, cutting in from the left, fired goalwards with a rasping right-foot effort, it deflected over the bar. Replays showed clear contact with Lascelles’ hand but referee Anthony Taylor waved away our appeals.

Arsenal were bright in attack and might have added to their lead. Iwobi, wriggling free in the box, toe-poked an effort straight at Dubravka and Lascelles came close to putting through his own net trying to clear a Chambers cross from the right.

Newcastle looked most dangerous playing long balls over our defence – a tactic that was to pay dividends. Having survived an early warning, when Mustafi made a last ditch challenge on Gayle, Arsenal continued to allow the home side room to hoof passes forward. On 29 minutes, Shelvey launched another pass to Gayle, he held it up, laid the ball to Yedlin who crossed low for Perez to fire home first time. The movement was good but that doesn’t hide the fact that for the second week running, Cech was beaten at his near post after an attacker got in front of Mustafi at the near post. (1-1)

We regained our composure and really should have restored our lead before the break. Chambers had two chances, the first a snatched miss after a neat Mustafi headed cross and the latter a header over the bar from a corner. Not long after, Willock, played in by Lacazette, who probably should have shot himself, completely miscued an effort that drew howls of derision from the home fans. All in all, an entertaining half of football.

Second half

The Gunners may have had 80% possession in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, but the game turned into a very scrappy affair. While we laboured up the pitch, the home side were often too hasty.

Pot shots by Ritchie, high and wide, and Iwobi, wide, were the best either side could muster before Benitez and Wenger decided to freshen things up. Gayle, charged with running the channels and testing the pace of Chambers and Mustafi, was replaced by Slimani, who provided more of an aerial threat. The Gunners responded by sending on Danny Welbeck for Willock.

Immediately, the home side took the lead. A poor header by Monreal across the backline left the full-back out of place, when the ball was worked quickly by the Magpies to where he should have been, Ritchie was in loads of space to finish past Cech. (2-1)

Newcastle nearly had a third when Slimani’s shot deflected up and over Cech and onto the bar. The Algeria international then left Mustafi on the turf as he set up Perez, thankfully the Spaniard could only hit the side netting.

In search of an equaliser, Lacazette squandered a chance to set up Welbeck instead shooting wide from a tight angle. The England international was furious. Off went Iwobi and on came Nketiah. We had lots of firepower on the pitch, but with the home side sitting deep, we didn’t have the necessary creativity to manufacture any chances. It was all predictably limp by the time we got to stoppage time.

Taking the lead and losing. It’s a very common story away from home.

Why are we like this?

Maniac

Arsenal the only side in the Premier League yet to gain a single point away from home in 2018. Arsene Wenger: Record Breaker.

lessthanthesumoftheirparts

Wrong, the only side in the top 4 English leagues yet to gain a single point.

Zakgooner

And we get these clowns coming out with the fans being the reason behind poor performances. Any fan who attends away games will tell you we are always behind the team (regardless of positions towards the manager/board etc), it’s always a collection of the hardcore fans who travel up and down weekly to support the team, no corporate clowns, no tourist, no neutrals….and look at the performances! There is something seriously wrong at this club

forest gooner

yeah
We have lost away points against stoke, southampton, and west brom

masterofthegoonaverse

Well he wasn’t ‘wrong’ then was he? Sorry to be pedantic but we are all pissed off today. Again.

Fatgooner

If we keep this up until the end of the season can we call ourselves “The Vincibles”?

masterofthegoonaverse

Completely agree but we’ve only played five in 3 1/2 months. Someone’s got to sort central defence out for fucks sake!

Ozenal

Shows up our lack of squad depth

Almọnd

Don’t blame it on squad dept but bad management. Liverpool are in Europe too and today’s squad on paper should be able to win the last 12 clubs in the league. I pray we don’t miss out on Europa and finish below Burnley

Ozenal

We have a fundamental problem with talent purchasing which doesn’t match our playing style. i.e. mustafi, who would fit into a burnley team who defend deep, but not a team who play open expansive football. And Xhaka who would be ideal in a direct football team alongside a proper defensive midfielder, but again not in a team where there isn’t a defensive midfield to cover his lack of pace and where the play moves vertically at a rapid pace. Liverpools playing style isnt as exposed as much as arsenal, as technical ball retention isnt essential, as they will just counter… Read more »

Darren

I thought we already qualified for Europa due to League Cup final?

Charvakan

No, but since Man City has the automatic Europa League slot and qualifies for Champions’ League, that means that the sixth place team gets a slot. If anyone but Southampton wins the FA Cup, then seventh is good enough for Burnley or Arsenal to go to Europe. There used to be a slot reserved for the FA Cup finalist if the the winner was in the top five (or six); if that’s still the case, Southampton could still get in by beating Chelsea and losing the final.

I think.

Gooner_IL

No, Man City’s League Cup Final European place goes to the 6th place team in the league. Unless Southampton win the F.A. Cup the 7th place League side will also qualify.

GoonerJust

First Newcastle’s win since 2005. And we are still pointless away from home in 2018, and its mid April already. WOW.
Yes, our season is over but resting most of our first tim players is a questionable decision. Typical sideway pass without any purpose, we didn’t even troubled their goal keeper.

Shitbird

Oh come on, if we’d played Ozil today and he’d got injured you’d be flipping yer wig.

Charvakan

Or play three at the back, AMN out right, and leave Willock on the bench. Joe as #10 was suicidal.

Arsenalman29

Because we are sh1t and have a shi1t manager. That every Arsenal fan with a footballing brain has seen for the past 10 years or more. 33 points off the top. So proud of this magnificent club. And it’s magnificent fans. Paying ridiculously huge prices to watch rubbish players playing for a rubbish manager and watch great players leave to win elsewhere. Wonderfully run club. Maybe next season we will finish in the bottom half. That should be our target next season. It seems the moronic fans are happy with it and happy to watch the decline over the previous… Read more »

Just buy a Tottenham shirt and change your posting handle. We won’t miss you.

grumpy

Well said. Fans frustrate me as much as Wenger does. Fans never look at the overall picture and have got very short memory
If we put up 3 losses and afterwards 2 wins, because the wins comes after…. they would be singing “there is only one Arsene Wenger”. Easily forgetting that win 2 loose 3 does not befit a club of Arsenal’s status

Not renewing

After a terrible first 75 mins against CSKA we put together a great move and scored and it killed them. How many went overboard with end result was staggering. The squad is lacking so many players. It’s embarrassing but Newcastle have a better midfield than us.

Acez

Simple answer really… Mustafi is pretty horrible at football.

Gooooonnnnnnaaaaaaa

Because we have a shmuck of a manager. I would have rested players but fucking play players in their position! Our idiot of a manager thought it was ok to go a season with 1 RB, so we end up having to play Chambers there who doesn’t look comfortable, then sub him off early when mustafi was by far our worst player on the pitch. Don’t understand why niles can play LB in big games like Chelsea and Liverpool but not Newcastle. Iwobi is so low on confidence nothings happening for him, you see he thinks twice every time he… Read more »

Jack

5 minutes to go. Arsenal 2-1 down and Mustafi and Holding still passing it back and forth to each other. That really was pathetic starting from when we conceded the first goal.

Ozenal

We just aren’t able to deal with compact defenses.

FFS Wenger

And Wenger decides not to get up and bollock anyone.

Gargoyle

If you’re gonna lambast the players you have to know what to say to them. You have to know how to correct what you’re seeing on the pitch.

HeComesFromSenagalHePlaysForArsenal

I dont think you need to spell it out to players that have dozens of games under thier belts. The need a fucking good fright a few threats that are made into promises. They rolled over and got shafted.FFs

Charvakan

If only we had a big forward who can change games and engineer a come-from-behind victory against lesser teams, like Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.

forest gooner

there was no creative mid
all strikers and all defenders/def. mids

forest gooner

welbeck was kinda playing number 10

forest gooner

it sucks to invest your time and stay up till midnight to watch such crap!
tomorrow is monday..it’s going suck even further
the whole week is going to suck

Gooooonnnnnnaaaaaaa

Try getting up at 5:30am to watch that shit, you trust me I feel your pain.

Firmcoq

Alright.

Anonymarse

We actually seemed to be trying for most of the game

FanniboyWelbz

You call that trying?

Anonymarse

If you take into account the whole match not just the last bit

First half I was quite happy. Didn’t last unfortunately.

FanniboyWelbz

I somewhat agree, the first 25 minutes it seemed like had some fight

Puskas

They’ve been very trying for the last 12 years.

cygan'sbaldspot

Maitland Niles > Willock. Don’t want to see Willock again.

Axedsoul

That’s a bit harsh of you. The lad has barely had any minutes with the first team under his belt, wouldn’t be fair to diss him so early on.

cygan'sbaldspot

It’s just my gut. You look at how many of these English guys ever come good. About 2%. Maitland Niles is still learning too but just looks like adequate quality. Willock will end up at a low level prem/championship club. Sure I may eat my words, but I think i’m right. Out of the current crop of youngsters AMN is the only one that will cut it at Arsenal.

Lettra

Interesting take .. I though t he did very well and the few mistakes he made can all be down to debutante jitters . I didn’t see a lack in quality ..No matter what young or old.. it’s simply not intelligent to judge a player after one game ..

cygan'sbaldspot

Fair point. Just my take on things.

ScotchEggsRule

Judging a kid on his first ever start is pretty much the dumbest fucking comment I’ve read on these forums….and there’s a lot of dumb things said.

Congratulations, you’ve set a new low.

cygan'sbaldspot

‘a new low’ – christ, it’s just an opinion man. I love arseblog but the haughtiness on the comment section is something else.

cygan'sbaldspot

any dissenting opinion – SQUASHED! I’m not fucking trolling or anything, just opening up the conversation.

ScotchEggsRule

Nothing to do with dissent. If you’re going to mouth an opinion in public, it’s gonna get shot down.

Don’t like it, don’t comment.

cygan'sbaldspot

‘Mouth an opinion’ your way of communicating seems a little hostile. You alright man? I’m totally fine with people disagreeing with me, that’s why I’m making salient points and you’re just fucking mouthing off your emotions.

ScotchEggsRule

Opinion or not. It’s a dumb opinion.

ScotchEggsRule

Let’s break this down, shall we….

You stated you don’t ever want to see a kid play for Arsenal again, after his first ever league start.

Just repeat that back to yourself.

Paul

Scotch, you played the man instead of the comment with your comment… “Congratulations, you’ve set a new low.” Peace and harmony 🙂

Goonerink

First start and first appearance aren’t the same thing, we’ve seen willock in other games and I too have the gut feeling he won’t make it. I wouldn’t go out and state it as fact yet but I still hold my reservations. Whereas AMN I feel will make it. As will holding who is still very young. Not putting down the lads potential, just the rarity of youngsters becoming ‘top top quality’ added to his average at best performances, and his stats (Attacking MF never scoring a goal for the club?) lead me to feel he won’t be a superstar.… Read more »

cygan'sbaldspot

I’ve had similar feelings about scores of English players and have never been proven wrong. Sure, law of averages dictates we should see a worldy soon but it won’t be Willock.

mmtv

you mention communication skills but tour opening point was pretty provocative.

Gooooonnnnnnaaaaaaa

You realize he’s 18-19 and that was his premier league debut right?

cygan'sbaldspot

Yes.

Charvakan

I’d have gone 5 at the back, AMN out right, and left Willock on the bench. He’ll be a good player one day, but it was a bad mistake to stick him in there today. The game passed him by.

C.B.

Attack was looking good, defence poor again, even the Dungeon. Need more in central midfield and defence.
5th consecutive away loss in the league, that’s crazily bad away form.

Maniac

Worst away run since 1984. Breaking all the records!

C.B.

Pointless this year!

That’s both:
– no points; and
– how much it is worth watching Arsenal away.

Axedsoul

Our attack looked solid indeed but our defensive woes continue to leave us in shambles.

Ozenal

When Monreal has to come across to deal with a header towards the right you know we have issues.

GraeB

We had our whole defence within 5 yards of each other out near the touchline and all of them were just ball watching. Monreal should have stayed left as should Holding, Mustafi, Chambers and Xhaka should be enough to deal with a throw in ffs. Chambers just gave up on defending at all well before that goal and is not good enough to play as a winger – what’s the point? When will Wenger learn that the purpose of defenders is to prevent goals not set them up? Iwobi flatters to deceive, so a midfield of him and Willock was… Read more »

Merteslacker

Infuriating performace, not unlike many of our league games this season. Without Ozil, we look so much like an average side.

Bois

Sadly not looking average still does not get us the points!

Bosscielny

Can we not play Mustafi from now on? Ever
I know Chambers & Holding are inexperienced but how much worse could they be?

Merteslacker

Chambers has been given many chances and has been a long way from convincing anyone

Ozenal

Mavropanos would be better than all three, bring him into the squad and get him some experience ahead of next season!

GoonerJust

AW was given the money and authority to buy defenders. Yet, none of the young defenders showed convincing performamces.

Ozenal

How do you know that? I think this season Gaz has made a point of showing that Wenger isnt in charge of transfers, which is why we didn’t get what we needed at all.

Instead we swap one striker for another who isnt allowed to play in Europa league. And dont have enough money to concurrently seal a deal for a defender.

Ozenal

This is a case of politics within a club ruining the footballing side.

Kwame Ampadu Down

Are you suggesting when Arsene was on charge of transfers we did get what we needed ????

GraeB

He’s not a full back or wing back. Go back to Swansea a couple of years back when he was totally outpaced and left to his own devices without the obvious cover required. He’s a CB pure and simple. Both he and Holding would look good in another team where defending is actually coached.

Mkhi Most

Mustafi always ball watching and never looks for where the threat from an opposition player is coming. See the first goal today. Wouldn’t blame Cech for that. And Chambers was so slow. He’s not a right back.

forest gooner

mustafi played big part in 1st goal

Kinghenrythe14th

Arsenal: The only team yet to get an away point in the premiership in 2018

Let that sink in…

Fatgooner

And it’s mid April!!!

forest gooner

baffling!

Mootilated

1) Pairing Auba and Lacazette seems to be nice. Now, if we could get some people who actually know how to actually play football instead of this lot, it would be great.

2) How Mustafi is a professional footballer is beyond me. If you ever feel like shit, just remember he’s paid millions to do a job he’s terrible at.

3) Wenger’s face after each defeat just gets funnier and funnier.

Ozenal

To answer all three points, we would need a strong centre back who can both play the ball and defend. And a midfielder who can play the ball quickly from our defence to our attacking third (we have two in the squad who are both currently injured)

GraeB

We could have had a defence of Carlos, Cannavarro, Nesta and Cafu and they’d still look awful without some sort of plan and training from the coach.

Atom

While recognizing the league is almost irrelevant at this point it is simply shocking we are the only PL team without an away point in 2018. The ease with which we are routinely carved open is also concerning given we are playing a much higher caliber side in Athletico than we have faced in the Europa League or even the PL during our recent good patch of form

Crash Fistfight

The league won’t be irrelevant if we’re having to play Europa League qualifiers in July because we’ve finished behind Burnley.

Wonga aht

Isn’t that a good thing? It’s either the champions league or no Europe at all. Also the youngsters get a few minutes under their belt.

Atom

For a club of Arsenal’s resources this is just flat out an embarrassing season. We could possibly save it by getting back to the CL via the Europa League (unlikely but possible) but I genuinely don’t understand the argument for retaining Wenger even in that scenario for anything other than purely sentimental reasons. Do people think somehow this is all going to get magically fixed over the summer and we will be back to contending?

Mkhi Most

Even if we did qualify for Champions League via the Europa League for next season, if Wenger stays on I don’t see us getting into the top 4 the following season given the way this team is coached.

FanniboyWelbz

How did i know they would turn it around? Maybe its because I’ve read the same book before. Two world class strikers and not a single shot on target the whole 2nd half (correct me if I’m wrong), and where is Kolasinac?? I want my 93 minutes back.

Chuffy

A much changed team makes no difference it would seem when it comes to defending. We probably had about 80% possession and they score twice from a few shots on goal. Wenger just cannot arrest this shit storm of a defensive shambles. Wenger still out.

Jules

2nd time in recent memory that Mustafi has allowed an attacker to run from behind him and score. Learn from your mistakes lad

Jenko

More to the point, why isn’t Wenger learning from his mistakes? Another away defeat to a mediocre team after taking the lead, just try different approaches and tactics, it’s all too predictable

Ozenal

Valencia mustve been laughing hard. How he is better than Gabriel. In fact didnt we try to sell Mustafi in the summer?

kas

Yes of the players we sold, OX World cup, Champions League next season. Sanchez, Champions league next season. Gabriel & Coquelin Champions league next season. Giroud possible FA cup final etc
The old idea that players were done when they left us is over.

Ricardo

Arsenal are bad away from home. Sad face…………

Mikeytaryan

Honestly, I don’t think there’s any reason whatsoever to keep Mustafi.
Besides his “potential” to be a good defender, there’s just too many cons that go against it.
No matter what, he’s prone to at least a mistake a game, he’s too rash and he is probably the worst passer of the ball in the team.
I think he’s been given enough chances and should be sold.

Vonnie

He’s been dropped by Germany because he made the same mistakes for them. Perhaps if he focused on his own game instead of pointing fingers at everyone else he might be better. Also what does Petr Cech have to do to be dropped. I’d rather have Ospina any day.

Kwame Ampadu Down

100% agree on Mustafi. He was laughably poor – not once but twice – for the 2nd goal (why arseblogger is blaming Monreal is beyond me) & yet still did his waving his arms around thing after as if it was someone else’s fault. Astonishing really.

100% disagree on Ospina. Cech is not playing well but is still better than Ospina who is just not a very good goalkeeper all imo.

ScotxhEggsRule

Mustafi is a fucking embarrassment. How many mistakes can one player make before being dropped?

Jules

On the plus side – Laca and Auba seemed like they could be a great partnership. Just need a bit more time to get some chemistry

Mayor McCheese

Hello everyone! Did I miss anything? Is the race for 7th still on?

Stephen

This matters. I know everyone will say “Europa League” but this matters. The idea that we’re not fighting to finish above Chelsea but instead will settle for finishing behind Burnley adds to the destruction of this club’s psyche and the fans that support it. We can put a better team out for points but instead it’s all smiles at the end of the game because “it doesn’t matter”. That’s a pathetic attitude. It will come home to roost if we fail to win Europa and finish 7th instead of possibly 5th. This isn’t Talledega Nights – places matter. Disgraceful –… Read more »

Mustafi Is exhausting

ScotchEggsRule

….and shyte.

Vonnie

Newcastle smashing into us all over the place and not a card in sight. Stonewall penalty ignored. We weren’t good but the ref didn’t help. Cech and Mustafi are shockingly bad and I don’t want to hear another word from Cech about keeping our focus blah blah blah because he’s fucking awful. Did I ever mention that I hate those chav blue shirts?

89 was fine

Not suprised as our away from is absolutely shocking and sticking chambers out wide on the right has proven not to be a sensible solution. Not much to take from this game that we all didn’t know already.

Ozenal

Chamber is time and again exposed on the right. The lack of support he gets from the right winger shows up both his defensive skills and his passing accuracy.

Glocken

Five successive league away defeats
Yet to win an away point in the league in 2018
First time we’ve lost five away since 1984
Another horrendous defensive performance

Irrespective of what happens in the Europa League this HAS to be Arsene Wenger’s last season in charge.

Crash Fistfight

I agree, but I could just about live with another season of him if we had Champions League money + exposure for recruiting players and (at least) consolidating our commercial income (I worry that we have deals that reduce with continued failure to reach the CL).

ScotchEggsRule

You want another season of Wenger spending our precious money on shit like Mustafi? You mad?

Crash Fistfight

Maybe there was something wrong with the way I wrote my post (judging by the number of thumbs down!). I meant that I want us to win the EL to get back into the CL and if that means Arsene staying I’d rather that happens than us not winning it and him going.

Glocken

Can’t agree with any of this. We can’t trust Wenger with more money. The squad & the fans are demoralised, it’s only the Europa keeping us moderately sane.

I’m afraid this weak attitude of ‘oh let’s keep him for one more year’ is killing us.

kas

Just for the sake of argument, wonder what a decent defensive coach would make of our players. Could they improve Mustafi & co like Klopp has improved the OX?

Glocken

Better coaches would probably make improvements to individual players but it’s just not going to happen with Wenger still in charge, he wont allow it. Jens has come in & done the square route of nothing to improve us as far as I can see. We can only move forward as a club & fan base if we get past & over this sycophantic obsession that fans have with him. While I totally agree he’s one of our greatest managers & we indebted to him you can have to separate his performance now to what it was. We were told… Read more »

Nice username. One bit of relief today anyway

Shitbird

Forgot there was even a game today, thankfully. Just now got online and watched the goals. Ours looked good, but theirs looked like classic Mustafi: arms up in the air, whose fault was that, certainly not mine. Having not watched the game, I nevertheless feel qualified to enumerate 5 things we learned today, so the Guardian won’t have to: 1) We need to buy a new CB 2) We need to buy a new CB 3) We need to buy a new CB 4) We need to buy a new CB 5) We need to buy a new CB But… Read more »

Starting to lose count of how many away games we’ve lost after taking the first goal. We flatter to deceive away from, we often start off looking quite good and dangerous, miss a few opportunities and then make defensive mistakes to give the game away. I do wish we’d fine a bit more urgency earlier in the game, rather than wait till the last 5 minutes to pass the ball forward with a bit of pace. Chambers is not a right back and shouldn’t be playing there and our whole defence needs a revamp. On the plus side Auba and… Read more »

Fatgooner

1. Totally predictable result: our rubbish away form was bound to continue, especially after a tough week playing away in Russia. And Newcastle’s current home form has been good. Having said that, we probably deserved a point.

2. Mustafi was pathetic for their first goal: maybe he should get some lessons in defending from Bould.

3. Top-four definitely gone now, but knowing Wenger he’ll probably win the EL and prolong his stay.

4. Arsenal to finish behind Burnley? Who would have thought that!

Clock-End Mike

I’m getting worried. This has never happened before. I’m finding myself agreeing with Fatgooner! I just thumbed up his comment! What is the world coming to?

Sid

We can’t defend FOR SHIT!!

Amusa

Games like today further reinforce my belief that Wenger should leave regardless of us winning the Europa.
Because that team regardless should be beating that mediocre Newcastle team.

Oenger wut

The substitutions by Newcastle were way more effective than our dire bench options.. Welbeck willock Maitland Niles Iwobi nketiah…. None of them aren’t arsenals standard. “but but they are only 18″well if that’s constantly gonna be an excuse, it means they aren’t ready!

Jdog

I just can find no love for this team. I want to rip their heads off 75% of games and punch them in the nuts. The players are technically better than most of the cloggers they come up against but time and time again they make decisions which are inbelievably thick. The defence is beyond slap stick. The ease which are players are beaten by a simple piece of skill or a looped cross. One aimless long ball takes out the entire back line. But worse than all of this is how the players feel justified to put in less… Read more »

Jean Ralphio

Passing too slow. We could have won the game in the first half. Willick didn’t have a great game at all. Yes, he’s still learning and we shouldn’t right him off and he can still improve. Had he scored in the first half we would have been out of sight I think.

I would have absolutely no problem with giving Rafa Benítez the job for a couple of years until a big talent becomes available to take over long term

Ozenal

He is an astute manager, but the type of players we have in the squad don’t necessarily work for the type of football he plays. If the subsequent manager who comes in after is different as well, it could well be disastrous mish mash of transfers by that time. Look at what happened at United, they bought in Fellaini and went direct football like Rafa does. And it didnt work. Continuity is key, just will we be able to recruit such a manager? It’s not the transfer fees the board is concerned about, it’s the wage bill, which is way over £200M a year and set to get higher just to keep guys like Ramsey and Welbeck, before we talk about big new signings. With the TV money, this might be sustainable, but only if we start competing for the title again.

Well, as I’m giving our attackers the benefit of the doubt due to the lack of tactics given to them by our manager, I feel I must do the same to our defense, however reluctantly. Bring in a new manager and let him decide if these guys are good enough. Right now, I’d say very few of them are but it could be as simple as changing the gaffer. We really must try that one day. I’ve heard good things happen when you do that.

Best case scenario: Finish 6th above Burnley (LOL)!!Beat Atletico and win Europa league!! next season get into the Champions league, scrape and qualify to round 16. Get whooped by Bayern or Barca!! Finsih outside top 4 again. What is the joy in this? Why are we OK with this? Wenger OUT!!!!

Worse case scenario: Finish below Burnley, get kncoked out by Atletico. Wenger stays, and the same crap again next season. Wenger OUT!!!!

Either way he needs to go. We need a new manager with new ideas!

After I just typed all that crap I realized I could’ve summed it up easily…

Benitez > Wenger

Clock-End Mike

I guess I made the right choice — it was more uplifting watching the Arsenal winning their Women’s FA Cup semi-final at Everton. Turned over after the match ended to watch the second half of the Newcastle match, and wished I hadn’t. The women’s team weren’t at their best, in fact, but they showed more drive forward, more passion (and defended much better) than the men’s team, who could learn a bit from them, at least in terms of attitude.
Wembley FA Cup Final on 5th May, anyone?

FFS Wenger

Wenger , Bould etc etc.fcuking up too much. Dont like Stan but money is always available.
Laca and Auba goal machines (shadows of thier former selves)
Mustafi a defensive monster in Valencia and Gabriel in starting 11 there.
Ox,say no more
Giroud, has more fight than iwobi and Wellbeck together
Kolasinac not a look in
Injuries, lack of balls, complacent,no composure, lack of team spirit, etc etc .Wenger is not exactly Mr Motivator and should take Yes man Bould with him out the door.

Jack4343

Valencia buys Coquelin and Gabriel from us and we buy Mustafi from them. Who is the better run club?

I dont really care but i kinda care

JAL

Our performances are nothing short of an aberration, our style of play is now unrecognisable, our recruitment has been nothing short of shambolic (£70m spent on Mustafi & Xhaka) to name a few, our development of players non-existent (Chambers, Holding, Bellerin, AMN, Iwobi etc), our contract management with key assets has been abhorrent. We pay the highest prices in world football and yet continue to be mugged off by the Arsenal board who refuse to act or are simply incapable to act. I have no idea how much longer we need to endure this, but one thing’s for sure, i… Read more »

yeah, I don’t know why willock is in the team as he does nothing, not surprised by the scoreline, I watched the under 23s and the captain DaSilva and the number 7 amaechi done really well, thought they deserved a better chance of playing in the first team than amn, and some of the other youngsters

Well, on the plus side…either we win the EL this year or we get a new manager. So either way, it’s something to look forward to.

Alex

The sad thing is I’m finding it hard to care any more. I want us to win the Europa, but what exactly are we fighting for in the league?

To finish above Burnley

The Anthony Taylor/ Mike Dean axis

FFS Wenger

Out of a team of 25 players, I cant name 3 that have improved under wenger in the last ten years. He was good but now not. Life is cruel. If i under perform during a short spell my boss asks why and if i dont improve then theres the door. 10 ish years piss poor performing and the selfish cont is still there. I really cant fathom it.Hasnt got the balls to stand up to failure and move on. Could have gone a legend 5 or 6 years ago but for me has lost ALL recognition. Only the fond memory… Read more »
