Welbeck relishing competition for England place

Danny Welbeck came off the bench to score for England as they beat Costa Rica 2-0 in a World Cup warm up game at Elland Road last night.

The Arsenal man is the leading international scorer in Gareth Southgate’s squad as the Three Lions head to Russia, and he’s relishing the fact there’s genuine competition for places in the team.

Speaking after the game, he said, “I am always hungry for more. I am really excited for the upcoming weeks.

I have got a good record when I am playing for England, scoring goals, getting into dangerous positions, players have been finding me in dangerous positions as well.

“I am making runs and always trying to put the ball into the back of the net.

“There is a lot of competition throughout the whole squad and there is a lot of talented players on the pitch, but I think that ups everyone’s game, and it is healthy competition.”

With just 12 months left on his current deal, Welbeck’s future at Arsenal is not entirely certain, but a good showing at the World Cup this summer won’t do his chances of a contract extension any harm.

Of course it remains to be seen how he’s viewed by new boss Unai Emery, and the English premium on transfer fees could see him sold for a decent fee and reinvested if it was decided to go in a different direction.

Unless we bring in someone better I’m all for keeping Danny. He can play on each of the 3 forward positions, as well as a second striker and he always puts 100% in. It’s a bit like Elneny. Not world class but very healthy to have such players in the squad.

hahahaha

And all the ‘memes’ aside, he is someone who I think, under the right guidance and mentorship, could turn out a very very good player.

imo keep perez and sell welbeck. He will fetch more money then perez which can be reinvested on more worrying issues. nketiah, perez, aubameyang, lacazette seems good enough for the upcoming season.

Apart from Auba none of the mentioned can play on the wing. We do not have a lot of wingers in the squad anyway. Perez would be striker number 3-4 and would therefore don’t play at all which isn’t good for the team spirit. Welbz, due to his versatility, would get more game time. Much more useful as a squad player than Perez.

Q3 Technique

IMO Welbeck would do really well under Emery. He’s hard working, got good stamina, and can actually following tactical instructions. He has the potential to do really well under a pressing system.

I am hardworking, some say my stamina is not the worst and my bosses know I can follow tactical instructions. On a side note, I want to see Arsenal improve and stop finishing below 4th. Time for sentiments and excuses is long gone. I hope we sell him and invest in better players to make us better. The days of blaming Ozil and Sanchez when we don’t win and look at a few others and say ” he’s a nice lad, he’s honest, he never hides, it’s because he just came back from injury 4 months ago, but he’s got… Read more »

Auba, Lacazette, Welbeck and Nketiah would be a great front 4 to have next season. I think Welbeck has more to offer in terms of goals. Last year he seemed to be finding his feet after massive disruption to his development owing to his injuries. He could develop further, with his runs, his ability in the air, and his finishing. Would he like to potentially play second fiddle to Auba/Lacazette?

Pete

That’s quite some formation mate. Who will be playing behind the front four? 😉

afan

I say get rid, he never was or will be good enough for arsenal

Surely the turd emoji to cover that eejit’s infuriating face? ?

We should have four strikers (besides Özil and Iwobi). If Welbeck goes, he should be replaced.

afan

OZIL, striker!!!

I think any coach in the world would like a player like Welbeck. Even though he ain’t so much a goal machine the man can do a job on the pitch. He is tireless, puts a shift in every time he plays and really tries to help teams he plays to. Even though I wouldn’t say he is a starter I would very much like to keep him in the team.

A Different George

There’s also the most optimistic possibility: that Danny has everything he needs to be a top forward except confidence. Everyone knows he has pace, strength, stamina, and works hard. But he is also–except in front of goal–a good technical player. The ridiculous miscontrols and miskicks never happen outside the penalty area, or really outside the six-yard box. So, maybe (I said it was the most optimistic, not the most likely, possibility), with a bit of confidence he can score 20 or 25 goals.
