After Wales boss Ryan Giggs expressed concern that Aaron Ramsey was due to face a Neil Warnock side just before the international break, the Cardiff manager says he hopes his team can ‘rough up’ the Arsenal midfielder, suggesting it’s how they’ll have to combat his quality.
In comments that hark back to the neanderthal approach of Sam Allardyce’s Bolton teams and the widely-held conception that the Gunners don’t like the physical side of football, Warnock paid tribute to Ramsey’s quality as a player but also insisted his team would target him when the two sides meet in the Premier League this afternoon.
“I will probably be wincing at every tackle, it doesn’t help that you are playing a Neil Warnock team,” said Giggs earlier this week, leading the veteran to respond, “I don’t blame Ryan for being nervous about the game.
“I hope we can rough him up. Needs must. Aaron is a top player and I’ve always liked him.
“I’ve always thought he was underrated really because he’s a player who doesn’t grab the headlines, he goes under the radar.
“He’s a manager’s dream. He’d be number one on your team sheet every week and then you put the other 10 around him.”
Despite his admiration for Ramsey, it doesn’t seem as if that will stop him instructing his side to ‘leave one on him’ as he returns to his former club, and you can be sure that approach will apply to all the Arsenal players.
