Arsenal will face Leeds United at The Emirates in the FA Cup 3rd round.
The match will take place at some point over the first weekend of January. Unless it’s selected for broadcast on the Friday or Monday. In which case it’ll be then.
Either side we play Manchester United on New Year’s Day and then Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on the 11th January.
It remains to be seen whether Freddie Ljungberg will still be in charge of the first team in just over a month’s time.
The Swede scored in consecutive FA Cup finals during his playing career, hitting the back of the net against Liverpool in 2001 (the less said about that game the better) and our second in the 2-0 win over Chelsea. You may remember John Terry being left on his arse in the build-up.
In total he won the FA Cup three times, picking up medals in 2002/03 and 2004/05.
Arsenal and Leeds do have a history in the FA Cup, with some classic ties down the years – the most recent of which saw Thierry Henry score that goal on his return to the club.
There’s also the added interest of on loan Eddie Nketiah to take into consideration.
A fun tie!
We need to win this competition to save the season. No top four possible with these players.
Maybe it’s a sign of the times. Maybe it’s the money or lack there of. Maybe it’s because we won it 3 times in the past 6 years. But I don’t really give a shit about the FA Cup and would happily see the youth out for games prior to the semis.
When we were playing good, and constantly finished in the top 4, Leeds gave us a hard time in the FA Cup. Things have changed now, so I would not be shocked if we lost at home to Leeds. To think we can win FA Cup is a dream.
We would be mad to give Leeds permission to play Nketiah in this game.
I read somewhere that we were going to recall him because he’s not playing enough.
That would make sense; plenty of other Championship teams would give him a game.
We have never done this, so i do not think he is allowed to play against us.
Wenger allowed Sanchez Watt to play against us when he was on loan at Leeds. But I believe the rules have changed these days anyway.
Arsenal 4 -3 Liverpool in the final.
I don’t know what’s less likely, scoring 4 (without Arshavin) or only conceding 3
I do recall scoring 5 at Anfield and still losing
?
We all hate Leeds and Leeds and Leeds……. We all f***ing hate Leeds.
They’re top, we’re not. Tony Adams remembering Wrexham when we were Champions doesn’t help. Tricky game.
West Brom won tonight so they’re back on top but interestingly enough 3 out of WBA’s back 4 defenders used to be at Arsenal; Gibbs, Bartley, Ajayi.
Chris Willock, Joe’s brother, is also on loan there.
Wouldn’t it be nice to occasionally get one of the lower ranked sides left in it.
We do; Blackpool, Lincoln, Sutton in last three years.
Hmmm….could have been better. Don’t fancy going out to a Patrick bloody Bamford goal.
Uh… yeah. They’d be on my shortlist of teams we didn’t want to get matched up with. Bielsa’s dossiers on our players already probably thicker than Emery’s was.
Shit draw. Nothing to win but everything to lose.
Thought it was a decent draw for us; at home against lower league opposition is a draw I would have taken beforehand. It’s only the third round so nothing to lose really. Plus two from Liverpool/Everton / Wolves/United will be knocked out so not too bad a draw for Arsenal.
‘Lower league opposition’? Leeds are at the top end of the Championship, narrowly missed promotion and have a team capable of finish mid table in the Premier League. Add to that 6,000-9,000 awful Leeds fans and a whole load of ‘Arsenal should beat this lot’ pressure, this sounds like an awful fixture.
Yes they’re in the Championship, hence lower league than Arsenal. I would take a home tie against a Championship club rather than away at a premier league club. Leeds always bottle promotion, no evidence that they are same level as a mid-table premier league team. Forest are 4th in the Championship and we hammered them 5-0 in the league cup.
Well, well, we’ll……Dirty Leeds! Time for a little more ‘pay-back’ for 1972.
*well
Pay-back for 1972.
That’s a long time to hold a grudge.
Such a grudge can only be held towards John Terry cuz he is a cunt
Terry on one side, Norman Hunter on the other. If you add Bremner, Joe Jordan and the rest to the pile, that Leeds side were a team full of (talented) cunts.
Tricky draw, that. Leeds are a good side and will relish coming into this as the supposed “underdog”… although it doesn’t feel like there are many of those visiting the Emirates these days!
Then again, beating Leeds is always good fun. Just need to make sure we actually do it.
listen to tayo’s piece thats linked in the article then go watch the goal back.
such a great moment.
Loan Henry back from the MLS again
Another 2-2 game as Norwich Southampton and Watford gave us. And then going to elland road. Would have preferred Man city
Who remembers the fa cup 3rd or 4th round in 91 I think !! It took 3 Replays to get past Leeds that year!! 0-0 twice at Highbury
Oh goody, we face the abominable snowmen
To all my esteemed fellow hard lined supporters/fans here….WHO??…IF not Freddie …should lead us to winning ways and GLORY???…I like Rodgers ..BUT..Arsenal is too big for him ..me thinks…
Everyone just close their eyes and imagine seeing that goal for the first time, I’ll always remember :” He maybe cast in bronze but is still capable of producing truly Golden moments”.
My favourite Arsenal goal.
As things stand now, Leeds are much better than us. It really is surreal what has happened. Still can’t understand it to be honest.
