Arsenal ran out 7-0 winners against Aston Villa in the WSL on Sunday afternoon at Meadow Park, with a Vivianne Miedema brace, an own goal and goals from Beth Mead, Lotte Wubben-Moy and a Nikita Parris penalty. Jonas Eidevall spoke to the press post-match, all of the questions are from Arseblog News.
On why Lydia Williams started in goal ahead of Manu Zinsberger…
Manu was away for a bit of this week for personal reasons and hasn’t practiced with us so much, Lydia has and was able to have a good preparation, so that was the reason.
The power on that strike 👀@VivianneMiedema opens the scoring for @ArsenalWFC at Meadow Park!

On how well his players are using pressing to neuter opponents as well as create chances…
I think it is a big part of us not conceding goals. We are finding a good balance between the two different ways that we want to attack. Today and against Everton we found a good balance between lightning fast counter attacks and really good possession based, positional play. We are finding good positions and waiting for the right moment to go through. That is what we try to embody. Many teams are either possession based teams or counter attacking teams, we want to be both and understand when to go and when not to. We did that really well and for us. I am pleased you notice what the players do off the ball because the players work really hard at that. I think we’re finding that balance and I don’t know how many clean sheets we have kept this season but not conceding is a massive part of taking the points we want to take.
Viv is unstoppable!

On his team’s intent to go and score more goals, even when the game was over…
It’s fundamental from two perspectives. To get the highest possible league position, goal difference can be important but it is also important from a mindset perspective. We need to think about how much we do with each game. When you look at Barcelona, look at their goal difference in Spain. It drives high performance across a season and it has played a massive part in how they have developed as a team and I am pleased we are starting to create that culture here. Also we want to develop ourselves by really pushing each other, it’s really important.
We all ❤️ a @lottewubbenmoy Gunners goal don’t we?
That’s five for @ArsenalWFC!

On Jordan Nobbs leaving the pitch in tears after injury and whether it might be related to her future…
Nothing has changed from my answer on Friday (that Jordan has another year on her contract and there have been no talks about her leaving). I haven’t had a chance to speak to her or the medical staff yet and I can’t read minds, so I can’t update my answer from Friday.
That is a cold finish from @SBlackstenius ❄️
The @ArsenalWFC finds the back of the net from an impossible angle!

18.Williams; 16.Maritz (26.Wienroither ‘72), 6.Williamson, 3.Wubben-Moy, 7.Catley; 13.Walti, 10.Little(c), 11.Miedema (8.Nobbs ‘72) (12.Maanum ‘84); 9.Mead (14.Parris ‘71), 15.McCabe (25.Blackstenius ‘60), 19.Foord.
I personally think Jordan’s tears were about the Euros rather than next season. She worked so hard to be selected for the national team again and being injured right before the season ends is so heartbreaking. Let’s just hope it’s not a serious injury because she was able to walk out of the pitch.
Well done
Best thoughts and wishes to Jordan🤗
I thought this was a really good performance. The boost to our goal difference sets up a fascinating scenario. If we draw with Spurs and beat West Ham while Chelsea lose to United we’re tied on points. However, our GD would be 50+winning margin over West Ham whereas Chelsea’s would be 4-losing margin to United => Arsenal as champions!
Missed a digit: 49-losing margin to United.
That’s correct, Peter – I realised that this morning and frankly it’s a distinctly possible train of events. MU have a strong squad and looking at their team on the field yesterday, are capable of upsetting Chelsea – would be very nice 🙂
Frankly, the thought of drawing a Sp*rs at home is quite revolting.
Let’s just beat them 4-0 and be done with it.
Winning the league by the narrowest margin possible would encourage Chelsea fans to take to Twitter to moan (again) about the offside goal at the Emirates, the handball at Kingsmeadow etc, which I’m very keen to see.
Then we can moan about them rearranging their fixtures to allow Sam Kerr to play while we were without our Aussies when we stumbled!
Happy for Keets🎉🎉🎉
