Partey gets Ghana nod for World Cup

Thomas Partey has been included in Ghana’s squad for the World Cup.

The Arsenal midfielder scored a vital play-off goal against Nigeria in March to secure his country a place in Qatar but he’s not featured since due to various injury issues.

Partey has netted 13 goals in 40 appearances since making his debut in 2016; a decent record in front of goal compared to the threat he poses on the club front.

The Black Stars play Granit Xhaka’s Switzerland in a friendly in Abu Dhabi on Thursday before opening their World Cup against Portugal on 24 November. They also face South Korea and Uruguay in the group stage.

This will be Ghana’s fourth appearance in the tournament and they’ll be hoping to better their best showing in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals.

He was always Ghana get the nod.

Eric Blair

An Accrate observation.

Boy Bastin

And some people say comedy is dead.

Johnny 4 Hats

Comment sections killed the stand up star.

Ospinas_thumb

But is he ready Togo?

Thierry Bergkamp (non negotiable)

Maybe if this was the 2008 world cup

Boy Bastin

Good news. Hopefully, he can stay injury-free through the tournament.

Safe Hands

Have a great tournament Thomas, just please go easy on those dodgy thigh muscles. Imo he is the most vital cog in our team, and we need him fit if we’re to pull off an unlikely title challenge.

house of goons

Almost too important. The thought of him getting injured keeps me awake at night – literally.

Not to be a dick, but c’mon S.Korea and Uruguay! I need Ghana out as soon as possible, so I can sleep at night. (Sorry, sorry, sorry to all the Ghana Gooners.)

Sean

Genuinely wouldn’t surprise me a bit if a sizeable amount of Ghanaian gooners were with you on this one 😬

Kojo

I hate to admit this as a Ghanaian, but I won’t shed a tear if we are knocked out in the group stage…COYG!

Boy Bastin

Yes, he certainly is injury prone (as we all know only too well) so we’ll just have to hope that he gets through Ghana’s games without serious injury. Sod’s Law is that he’ll probably get through the World Cup completely unscathed then pick up an injury at Arsenal’s training ground on his first day back! I hope not, but who knows?

Jeremy

TP is one of the best DMs to ever play at Arsenal. The way he controls games and dictates the pace, I will just never tire of watching it. Just like Gilberto did, he fills me with confidence whenever he is in the team. Have a great world cup and go easy on the thighs.

Daveo

Yeah, I think early we all (and Arteta too) got a bit too fixated on his box-to-box potential, we realised for the upteenth time that Xhaka is absolutely NOT a DM and we reversed the roles. Xhaka is thriving further forward knowing Partey and his exceptional mobility is covering behind him (and Zinny too) and Partey is thriving in his ideal role directing the play as a hybrid DM/deep lying play maker. It is just wonderful watching his subtle movement at just the right moment everytime to find space for the pass and then move it on quick or make… Read more »

Who needs TP more, Arsenal or Cornholio?

MinsterGunner

We need TP for our gung-ho (attacking play). Uh huh-huh

Johnny 4 Hats

He needed it for his bum hole.

We need it for our Arse-nal.

Fenko

“Partey getsthe nod”?
As if his inclusion in the Ghana team was always a doubt if fit?
Please, just come back to us healthy and ready to go again for the second part of the season.

SizC

Lol, we should sign all the players that threatened his place in the squad!

Alex

Of course

A Different George

I watched Palinha play brilliantly for Fulham yesterday. He would be perfect as someone who could play in place of either Partey or Xhaka without a huge drop in quality. I can’t imagine Fulham wanting to lose him, but every player has a price and this is one of those rare seasons when overpayng for a 27 year old might make sense. I am not saying he is the only one, but there aren’t too many at that level who aren’t already playing at a top club.

Badaab

not sure he’d be willing to take a step down and play backup/part time behind partey at 27, but he does fit the profile (however he does also love a yellow card, so availability might be an issue in the PL).
personally i’d look for a younger player who can learn the system and grow into the role, much like how we’re trying with sambi (who really isn’t the successor to partey in this position). danilo fits the bill here, but he’s unproven in the PL and may need an adjustment period to a new league/country etc.

Garnacho looks an incredible talent, let’s nick him from Man United.

Cobwebs

Hoping the Black Stars get their revenge against the cheating Uruguayans who robbed them of their semi final place.

Badaab

just leave a couple on nunez, its fine

ArsenesLongSufferingZipper

Fingers crossed, Ghana get knocked out in round 1, and Partey’s on the earliest flight out of Qatar. I am Nigerian, and the England-Germany football rivalry is kindergarten stuff compared to Nigeria-Ghana. In football, not wishing Ghana well is part of every Nigerian’s DNA.

Bleeding gums murphy

You can say that again

Fingers crossed, Ghana exit in round 1, and Partey’s on the next flight out of Qatar. I am Nigerian, and the England-Germany football rivalry is kindergarten stuff compared to Nigeria-Ghana. In football, not wishing Ghana well is part of every Nigerian’s DNA.

Leon

Part of me wants to see our players do well at this world cup.
But the bigger part of me wants to see our players back at Arsenal fit and healthy and ready to push on.
In fact, all of me wants to see them back at Arsenal and fuck this stupid world cup.
What a horrible place to stage such a world cup.

Man Manny

Thomas Partey is the only player in our first team we can’t really afford to do without at the moment. Thus, I am going to go selfish and wish him a brief but injury-free world Cup. Three matches only. Besides, he has more chance of winning the EPL than the WC.

Walleye

I am already depressed there will be no Arsenal this weekend.
december 26 is so away

TotsOfJack

He’s been simply outstanding for his country. Can’t believe the criticism he receives from some Ghana fans. Some people are impossible to please.

Brady’s bunch

Nice kit

For the love of God, mate, STAY FIT.
