Wenger backs ‘upset’ Giroud to come good

Arsene Wenger admits that Olivier Giroud is distressed by his lack of goals since moving to Arsenal, but feels the attacker will come good on both domestic and European fronts.

The former-Montpellier grabbed his first goal for the Gunners during last week’s Capital One Cup hammering of Coventry, but having missed a penalty later in that game and having squandered a guilt-edge chance to snatch an equalizer against Chelsea it’s obvious that the 26-year-old has yet to find his killer instinct.

Asked for the umpteenth time about the form of his summer signing, Wenger reflected that it was sometimes difficult to soothe the frustrations of a non-scoring striker.

“He is upset,” said Wenger. “I told him not to worry but you say what you want. A striker who doesn’t score, doesn’t really listen to you. They run it through in their minds over and over again.

“I believe he has some qualities for domestic football because when he came on the other day you can say, ‘Okay, he missed chances, but he [only] had two.’

“He is still in what I consider an adaptation period because it is a different team, a different way of playing and different football.

“There is 100 percent commitment from the centre-backs here [in England]. They really go for it. He will adapt.”

Asked whether the Frenchman was a possible candidate for a starting berth this evening against Olympiakos, Wenger hinted that he could make room for Giroud.

“I make changes again, yes. I will sort that out overnight [on Tuesday].

“Giroud can be a valuable Champions League asset. Not only in the Champions League, I hope in the championship as well.”

Giroud’s start has obviously been far from ideal. While he himself has always made clear he needs time to adapt to life in the Premier League, his current body language suggests that being built-up as a replacement for Van Persie and then being written off as Chamakh Mark II has taken its toll.

Unfortunately for him, expectant supporters and this country’s trigger-happy media aren’t likely to change anytime soon, so it’s up to him to drag himself from his current funk. Goals are the only answer. Let’s hope he starts scoring them soon.

I really hope he starts and scores a couple tonight so people will lay off the poor bastard.

Absolutely nothing to do with this article, just a little something to put a smile on your faces –

Brilliant! Thanks man!

Hudson Hornet

Judge him after 3 seasons.

Henry took 8 gamzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Heh

Writing like thissssssssssssssss doesn’t really help pass your point across!
only trolls do this.

Eisfeld

i expect that he’ll score. Otherwise play me. I bag em like crazy for the U-21’s

Hudson Hornet

Nicklas Bendtner. Please come back.

All is forgiven.

glory hunter

Lol that made me chuckle.
I know what you mean, cos as bad as Bendtner was/is i still think he’s better than Giroud, i honestly hope im wrong tho.

Giroud really has to start taking his chances cos at this rate he’ll be worse than Chamakh.

Bucks

I think you’re both silly.

89 Anfield... It's up for grabs now!!!

I think their both cunts.

Heh

*they’re.

My bad. Point still stands though.

Shit car, even shitter person.

You’ll be eating those silly words very soon i hope!

R18

I fucking despise juve, taking our tgstel and giving him 11 minutes of playing time?. I was really looking forward to seeing him play but so far we have nothing, should have stayed with us atleast.

MAllen

He’s just not good enough. Look at the progress of a certain Dutch skunk over the years, then look at TGSTEL. He needs far too many chances to get a shot on target. Of 100 shots, 90 will be over the bar, and of the 10 on target, 2 will score. Maybe a slight exaggeration but you get the point.

Simao Segunda

I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate.

TORUC MACTO

At ma local viewing centre..am the most vocal supporter of giroud, i hope he starts nd score.,so i’ll shut so many mofos up!

George

“local viewing centre” is one of the more complicated ways i’ve heard someone describe a pub

eddymc2

To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a viewing center is just a viewing center…

Jayde

Well believe it or not in some other countries (they are other countries you know!), locals have a place where they gather for football matches all in their respective club colours and what not. No beers, no nothing. So it’s not at all odd.

TORUC MACTO

Lol….jayde z correct..am nigerian nd its a local viewing centre just as jayde explained..u guyz serzly got me lol

Bee

i’m sorry we didnt get to play in nigeria this summer, toruc

hopefully we can do it next year for all our fans over there, enjoy the game tonight!

TORUC MACTO

Bee, thanks, it was painfull when we heard the visit waz cancelled, buh it waz fun havin poldi, bfg and the bac.. i promise to be more vocal in our local viewing centre! coyg

Festa

This situation reminds me of Adebayor to a degree. When Adebayor first came to the club, he had all the right attributes but his finishing was woeful and his confidence was low. I dislike Ade as much as the next gunner but you have to admit that when he gained confidence, he was great for us one season (scroing 30 goals) and if he had kept his head on his shoulders, he would of been a top striker for us.

I see the same attributes and quality in Giroud, he just needs time to adapt and gain confidence…..

Midfield Corporal

That’s a very good comparison, he like Giroud would get into the right position but then balls it up.

I’m not worried about Giroud, football is full of players who started their careers at various clubs slowly, only to make their mark once they settled in. Look at Drogba, he was a figure of fun for the first year at Chelsea, he turned out quite good. The flip side of this is their are players who started their careers brilliantly, only to underachieve thereafter, I call this the Raphael Meade syndrome.

Matt

This is like when you have a bird who is great in bed but not so pretty. So you trade her in for one more pretty but not so good in bed. With persuasion(wine) and training pretty bird gets up to standard and you eventually get the best of both worlds.

Until she leaves you.

Ca$hley Cole

Haha, it sounds like your speaking from experience …

alx96

Who are you describing as “a bird who is great in bed but not so pretty”?
RVP? TGSTEL?

Merlin's Panini

haha. nice analogy.

ramgooner

i think we all know what kind of a bird john terry is.

Jack Jumblies

The only thing missing is goals. Providing assists, hold up play, intelligent movement, bullying centerbacks, defending from the front, defensive presence on set pieces and corners have been very positive. There’s no doubt he has the footballing skills. Also he’s not a spoiled footballer you typically see. I have a friend who was at Clairefontaine the same time as Henry and Anelka. He said Giroud knows himself very well and has always been grounded in hard work. I want him to do well not only for Arsenal but because by all accounts he is a very good guy we can… Read more »

Ive seen him strolling back with opposition players in possesion right next to him, several times. Defending from the back? Not so sure

R18

I’m sick of this, Just fucking score, all has been said already. Nothing to add on really. He should just score!

fight against fickleness

well fucking said!
just fucking score Giroud, its getting embarrassing 🙁

arseblog

Never has a username been less in tune with a comment

Nero

If not for the emoticon, I would’ve thought that was meant to be ironic

MAllen

R18 I think I know where you are coming from. After all, if you can score when you want on FIFA, why cant Giroud do it on the pitch? FiFA, pitch – its all the same, isn’t it?

sacklad

the fact that he’s fairly beastly in FIFA is one of the main reasons i have belief in him. is that bad?

Attasmani

Jesus, he’s here for a few weeks, judge him after 1 season. I understand that journalists make their money with selling stories and doom and gloom sells better, but I don’t see any reason why we should write him off that quickly. He has all the right qualities, getting in to good positions, creating chances etc. and he proved last year at Montpellier that he can also finish. And soon he will do the same at Arsenal. Until there we should support him

Jayde

Judge him after five games.
Okay, now Judge him after atleast 5 starts
Judge him now but dont judge him too harshly, he’s handsome.

Judge him after one season!?…..okay this is just way too extreme!

MAllen

Yep. It’s the same crowd that said the Dutch skunk was rubbish.

Midfield Corporal

Some people never learn, in fact they keep on making the same mistakes. Kosceilnys shit….oh actually he isn’t, we’ll then Rosickys shit…..no he’s not, Mertersackers attrocious……wrong, jenkinson will never make it…….looks like he will.
I think some fans get a kick out of knocking players so they can say ‘I told you so’. Throw enough shit and some of it will stick……… I guess thats Chamakh.

Donski

It’s getting embarrassing? Really? Wind in that neck of yours fella!

glory hunter

To be fair, we all want Giroud to do well, and i think he’ll deliver.
Ive always felt after his mediocre/average start, that he’s arsenal career would be the opposite of Chamakh’s!
Start poorly, and then just when we need him the most and have practically given up on him he’ll start banging in the goals.

Thats what im hoping for anyway.

R18

-On a one on one situation giroud cannot beat you.
-We’re laying him the assists on a silver platter but still he ain’t hitting the target.
-Our best crosser, jenks in on the pitch, giroud is on the bench, giroud comes in, jenks is already tired and provides meh crosses, mainly to atleast get a corner. Giroud has to start and prove that he’s something.
– One two passes not really going well for this guy, poldi/caz are okay.
-His finishing is still questionable.
But I will keep the faith.

eddymc2

I’d hardly call the service he’s getting “laying him the assists on a silver platter”. He gets so little service that I sometimes forget he’s playing.

R18

Off the top of my head I rem atleast 5 on a silver platter chances that he fluffed not that i’m counting o’ anything. Another thing i’ve noticed he’s overtly reliant on his left foot, not that its bad but come on does he always have to finish with hia preffered foot.?

Stephen

agreed. When he’s on the field they still play it our to the wings in the final third and then try to dribble it in. If he’s on the field the play should come through the middle because he’s strong. If the play’s on the wings the crosses should be dropped near him – every game they’ve gone feet over his considerable height.

MAllen

Bull – the service to Giroud has been poor. I have a feeling that Walcott especially wants to score himself rather than pass it this season.
PS. You’re not keeping the faith. You are a negative winging moany git. If you were keeping the faith, you would have observed the quality of the finish for the goal he score last week. Sheer quality.

R18

Quality of the finish he has, I admit. But so far he hasn’t had the quality to put away his chances!. Faith though I dohave mallen, that you cannot rob me of.

Midfield Corporal

Are you Yoda R18?

Fergie the Gooner

So if he can’t win a one on one how did he manage that goal against Coventry?

Give the poor fella some time, it’s not his fault that the skunk forced us into this position.

aditya swarup

I think Arsenal fans can sometimes behave like spoilt brats… Giroud has just started with Arsenal and people are doubting his abilities… Comparing him to RVP and then TGSTEL ffs… Yes RVP took his chances well last season(and year) but could you say the same about him before that… He used to miss sitters sometimes and even last season some of his goals were just served to him on platter by Walcott… RVP connected well with Walcott because they played a lot together and RVP knew when to delay his runs into the box… Giroud has just joined us and… Read more »

Wenger's Glasses

Agree with Aditya Swarup 100%.

& ffs sometimes some of these so called Arsenal fans are more anti Arsenal than fans from other clubs. Jeez.. I’m sure it’s only a minority, but what a bunch of loud pathetic spoil brats. Smh

argonaut

No. You are wrong. Arsenal fans are getting increasingly irritated in that Giroud is not being played in the position he was bought to play in and is not being given the opportunity to bed in properly. Using him as a sub for Podolski is ridiculous. They should both be starting and should be playing together. Playing Gervinho in the middle is also ridiculous. It sort of half worked once, but he is not a calm, clinical finisher and is far better suited to playing on the right. Arsenal have the players to challenge for the title this year yet… Read more »

Dick Swiveller

Do we really call a 6-1 win (even against so’ton) ‘half-working’? Or scoring in a big derby match for that matter.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that the guy who is providing more to the team is starting over him, shows strength in depth and a prioritisation of results over development to me, something sadly lacking at times.

Personally, I’m more irritated with his inability to put chances away but he needs time.

Taking The Mik

Watch him score a couple tonight and become a completely regiroudvinated player.

AgentITK

I actually winced reading that.

Arteta's Hair Gel

such sweet failure

Voldermort

A striker normally lives off confidence. He won’t get his mojo back by being on the bench. Arsene needs to play the bloke.

Heh

We need a small in stature striker come january. Someone aguero-esque with tons of pace and a great finisher. Bojan krjic or eduardo….. da silva one or anyone in that mould.

Giroud will come good but we still need another striker!

Red and White Stripey Socks

Is it just me, but why the fuck isn’t AW on a plane to NYC to kidnap Henry!

Dick Swiveller

He’ll be back, it’s notable that his fitness and form seem to be much better this year in MLS…I’m sure there’s been talk of him returning and he wants to do a little more apart from 20 minutes of play followed by 60 minutes of wheezing.

Also Heh, your striker is Joel Campbell and he’ll be here next summer.

sacklad

he’s genuinely been scoring for fun over here, absolutely could still have an impact

Merlin's Panini

Everyone seems to think he should have put that chance away against Chelsea, but I didn’t actually think it was that easy, plus there were defenders getting back on the line so I suspect it may have been cleared even if he did hit the target.
It is getting a little worrying but I think I’ve seen enough to know he will come good. If he can just relax a bit he’ll do alright.

Eric Irish gunner

Agree, and we should start playing him from the start

argonaut

In his correct position, and not shoved to one side because the latest “project” happens to be trying to turn Gervinho from winger to striker just to piss Theo off.

Mills N7

It is difficult to see Gerv playing through the middle as totally unrelated to Theo’s contract… But I think that Gervinho is a good option through the middle, but not right now. Giroud needs to play, he needs to be assured of his place for a couple of games in order to get confidence.

SiKay

I agree, it wasn’t an easy chance at all, by the time he had rounded cech there was less than a metre’s width of goal to aim for while moving with the ball.

Weedwacker

Judge him after one season. Yeah right…..
So what is the best team to crush the greeks tonight
mannone
jenkinson mert verm gibbs
ox coq arteta cazorla
giroud pod

D72

He scored 5 times last night in our 6-1 Drubbing of West Ham (On FIFA13)….. Clearly I’ll be basing my prediction of his performance this evening on that.

Arxavin

I have a feeling he’ll score tonight, if he starts..

argonaut

If you want Giroud to score goals, Arsene, how about you keep playing him as the middle of the front three instead of playing Gervinho there? If you never give the guy a decent run at the head of our attack, then how can he score goals? It certainly won’t happen while he’s on the bench. Gervinho is naturally a right winger, yet because of Theo we played him on the left. Now we are playing him in the middle, which is daft especially when you have such a great finisher in Podolski available, and Giroud, who was bought to… Read more »

the only sam is nelson

perhaps the manager will bench his top scorer to accommodate the wishes of an anonymous internet poster who insists he knows the positional play of the game and individual players better

or, then again, perhaps not

who knows?

Elly

He won’t unless Wenger shows a bit of faith in him and starts him more. Shame Wenger seems to be on a mission to turn him into another Chamakh, being subbed on after 75 minutes and expected to produce something incredible and then getting slated when he (not surprisingly) doesn’t manage to immediately win the match. Have some confidence in the guy Arsene and PLAY him as a striker for a few full games, and shift Gervinho back to the right wing where he can do what he’s been doing just as well.

Fatgooner

I’m sorry, but so far I’ve seen nothing to suggest that Giroud is the 25-goal-a-season striker that we desperately need. I remember when Bergkamp was signed and struggled to score early on; even though he wasn’t hitting the back of the net it was obvious that he was class and would eventually come good. But I just don’t see the quality in Giroud. And I simply can’t see why he is not being started in Premier League games. If he is our number-one striker how come he’s always starting on the bench?

MAllen

Another negative contribution by the FG. Quelle suprise. I can’t wait to see you eat fat humble pie on this blog when Giroud bangs em in.

arseblog

It’s an honest opinion, which he’s perfeclty entitled to hold and express. I’m sure if Giroud does start banging them in he’d be happy to eat some humble pie.

Provided it wasn’t served by chucking it in his face.

Dr Baptiste

Didn’t Bergkamp sign in the days when brilliant technical foreign players were a rare sight in the English leagues? To compare the 2 is pointless as it was a different time entirely in terms of playing styles, formations (who had heard of a team playing 4-6-0 with no striker before?), shape and speed of the balls, boots, etc…. The closest we have right now to Giroud is Chamakh and Giroud looks a far better player. It’s no coincidence that Podolski was scoring with Giroud on the field pulling defenders around but has struggled with him on the bench. As I… Read more »

sacklad

honestly i like it better this way, last year the skunk dragged us kicking and screaming to third, but this year i genuinely can’t name a player who is doing everything and winning us games (Cazorla maybe). We have a team now, and now the unmentionable is dragging United kicking and screaming. I genuinely think they are doing worse right now than we ever were last season, it’s just masked by the fact that Robin’s season wasn’t a one-off

big black clock

Fucking busybody media. Rooney hasn’t scored as well this season, bugger off and go bother him you muppets

Listen to the boss Olivier. He bloody KNOWS.

[…] 来源:[Arseblog News] […]

arsenal_southAfrica

why doesn’t Giroud start? With podolski, gervinho, gibbs and jenks providing quality crosses..? Or even carzola.. Who can put him clean through..? Any striker who plays 90min with a bit of talent at arsenal will always get chances.. That’s a fact.. the only reason gervinho has so much goals is the amount of chances he gets.. What if someone who is a proven goal-scorer gets those same chances..? What if..?

Arseblood

Giroud is a right turkey. Look at his awful body shape in the three sitters he’s missed….all wrong. His feet and body facing different directions. No balance, falls over when about to shoot. I said it in the summer….worse than Bendtner just a better attitude. I worry that Wenger won’t pick his strongest side just to give Giroud the chance of a goal……and Ramsey ahead of Walcott?…. just to teach Walcott a lesson. Bollocks….pick your best side.

Dr Baptiste

He did against City, and had Ramsey on the right, and we deserved to win while against Chelsea, losing Diaby changed the while shape of the team and made us unbalanced.

So far this season, Wenger has chosen the best team he thinks will win based on the opposition. I said before the game against Chelsea that Mertesacker shouldn’t be left out but can understand the thinking in terms of the speed of players.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it’s exactly that, hindsight.

Tom The Gunner

We NEED a new striker, its obvious that Podolski is going to play left wing so that leaves us with Giroud and Gervinho, they are not gonna cut the mustard!

Rvp practises cuntism but infact he’s really torn between that and mercenarism.

He’s getting closer to scoring and it will happen. his runs and movement is good.

if King Arsene says he will come good then thats good enoigh for me He does everthing right off the ball hes just lacking that bit of cutting edge up front which im sure will improve. In Arsene we trust!

Don’t worry, I remember people were writing off Park when he first arrived, er, anyway… :-s

Piers Morgan really is a wanker, takes a dig at Giroud at every opportunity and he has the cheek to call himself a “fan”
