Confirmed: Marquinhos joins Norwich on loan

Arsenal have confirmed that winger Marquinhos will spend the second half of the season on loan with Championship side Norwich City.

The 19-year-old heads to Carrow Road having featured six times for the Gunners since his summer move from Sao Paulo. The youngster also made an impression at academy level scoring four goals and making two assists for Mehmet Ali’s side.

Signed for £3.5 million, Marquinhos arrived raw but enthusiastic and has done well to get the minutes he has considering Arsenal had intended to loan him immediately after his arrival.

Six months in the rough and tumble of England’s second tier will certainly be an experience and at this point in his development, certainly more use than sitting on the bench at the Emirates. With the arrival of Leandro Trossard and Reiss Nelson likely to be fit soon enough, his opportunities to play were likely to be limited.

Word reaches us, he’ll be staying in the Linton Travel Tavern, equidistant between London and Norwich and with an excellent view of the A11. We hope he’s taken his own 12-inch plate for the breakfast buffet.

Good luck, Marquinhos.

Alan, you’ve come free at the side.

Cannon and ball and arse’n’all

With his pace up top so here ends the pedestrianisation of Norwich City’s centre

K-Gooner

Good luck M! Come back stronger 💪

Bryan

What is this nonesense am hearing bout jorgihno to arsenal almost done ? 🙄 and mikel arteta is the one backing the deal ?😣💔 …….if this is true then whatever happens ill bring out my arteta out .how can we go from cech ,willian n luiz n bk to this after all the work we have done with our squad.this is madness

Man Manny

For me, Jorginho in there is better than nothing. Everyone’s seen Brighton’s stance on Caicedo, our number one target. All we need is someone to cover for Partey in the case of any injury. Lokonga does not fit the bill; Elneny is crocked.
18 months deal does not drag the club back or stiffle any young player that much. If Rice and Caicedo come in this Summer, we can move him on.

John C

He would be the replacement for the next 18 months for Elneny, who would be shown the door in the summer if he’s signed.

The issue is how much sympathy or support the fans are willing to give him. Any mistake he makes will be seen as unforgivable to many

Nainsley Aitland Miles

If an Arsenal fan in the stadium can’t forgive a player’s mistake, then that fan shouldn’t be in the stadium. Leave the tickets for the fans who will support every player.

John C

As I’ve said the issue for me is what effect it might have on the harmony that’s been cultivated. Jorginho is clearly a better player than Elneny but so were Willian and David Luiz and they were hardly warmed to.

Boy Bastin

Say what you like about Chelsea (and people certainly do, quite rightly) assuming the deal goes through they’ve shown again an almost uncanny ability to shift players just at the right time (for the club), and often for decent money. They bought him in 2014 for £50 million or so I think, and having got the best out of him still manage to sell him to us for £12 million after eight years. If only we could do that sort of business! We usually end up paying players around his age to leave Arsenal. Rather than concentrate on player transfers,… Read more »

Boy Bastin

*I’ve just read that he’s only got six months left on his Chelsea contract so they would have lost him for nothing in the summer. How do they do it, and can we find out?

Merlin’s Panini

Let’s just put this into perspective. Cech, Luiz and Jorginho have all won the Champions League. Willian also won basically everything else. There’s a premium that comes with players with that experience. As much as I hate Chelsea, that’s why. They know how to win. What did Mustafi, Kolasinac and Ozil win with us other than a couple of FA cups?

Badaab

Matt Smith is a better option than jorginho, who has the turning circle of a battleship and moves twice as slow

Santi’s Thigh Grab

Arteta obviously doesn’t think so.

Eric Blair

Correct, and Rteta has accumulated so much good will after the first half of the season that he can do as he pleases right now. Having said that, if this situation bites us in the backside there will be a significant portion of the fanbase who will probably never forgive him

Daveo

You really think Arteta said to Edu: “mate, go out and get me Jorginho, stat!”…lol!

More like:
Arteta: “mate, go out and get me Bellingham, Rice, Caciedo, or Camavinga, stat!”.
Edu: “Amigo mio, guess what, I got you a player with more combined international caps than that whole group – Jorginho! Can you fucking believe it!”
Arteta: “I’m going for a walk”

John C

He biggest issue i have with Jorginho isn’t that i don’t think he’s a very good player, which i don’t but the soft factors.

The club has built up such good will between the fanbase but this risks testing that to the very limit. There’s very real potential the atmosphere could turn if Jorginho starts to cost us points in a way I don’t think would happen if Sambi did.

It’s a big gamble that means we must win the league in a way i don’t think would be the case even if we sign no one.

Der32

Then support him with everything you’ve got once he pulls an Arsenal journey. Once he signs, he’ll be our bastard. I always hated playing against him, but soon our opponents will be the ones feeling this way.

Der32

Arsenal jersey*

John C

Like Willian was?

John C

What also makes no sense to me is Jorginho’s transfer cost will be circa £8m a year for the length of his contract and for that money you might as well go to £80m for Caicedo who if we have him for 10 years will also be £8m a year.

So again, unless he wins us the league he’s a gamble I don’t think is worth making

Funsho Patrick

Better we have jorginho then find a long term replacement for himself and partey while probably integrating Azeez….caciedo is a 35m player on sane days…

John C

He’s clearly better than no one and almost certainly better than Elneny

Badaab

Sorry, but the “my country right or wrong” stuff is for saps. You’re allowed to dislike it when people make obviously bad decisions and should in fact criticize them for it. Jorginho will be a disaster on so many levels.

Eric Blair

Let’s get behind him and see.

Badaab

Let’s not and instead let him try hard to win our support through actions rather than buying into jingoism

Eric Blair

A surefire recipe for success, you go for it.

Boy Bastin

Well, as the blog on the site suggests (and a small number of us have said in other comments) this all looks a little desperate now. Plan A fell through when Mudryk joined Chelsea. Plan B never really looked that well thought out and is probably a dead duck – good news, in my opinion as Caiceda was grossly overpriced. We’re now at Plan C, apparently bidding for a 31 year old with no re-sale value and doesn’t remotely fit the club’s age profile (key corner stones of Edu’s transfer strategy) who is, understandably, looking for one last big payday.… Read more »

Boy Bastin

*Caicedo

Rick_Sanchez

We need another midfielder asap, Caicedo is not available, the market is dry and we clearly have big targets in the summer (Rice and whatnot).

We are not breaking the bank (12m per Ornstein), we get an experienced lad for 18 months and can push on in the league.

Another one from Chelsea? Not my favorite option but in the end it all makes sense!

Badaab

Sounds more like you’ve talked yourself into it than it making sense.
He’s old. He’s not good. He doesn’t know the system. He’s got expensive wages. He’s slow. He’s not what we need and reeks of desperation. It could very well unbalance the dressing room and ruin the season.
Recall patino. Put in Smith. Huge mistake signing an ancient glory hunter from those blue pricks

Santi’s Thigh Grab

Neither Patino or Smith are nowhere near ready for a PL title run in.

Badaab

Neither is some slow old cunt from chelsea

Eric Blair

Arteta has clearly decided that of all the available options right now, this one made the most sense. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Daveo

100%. What about the notion of being a little bit prepared? Maybe moving for Caciedo at the start of the window instead of the ridiculous overdrawn flirting and chasing of the Mud. Here’s a thought: Bid for Mud in late Dec – asking price is a firm 100M quid. That’s too much. Move for trossard early jan – lock that up quick smart Move for Caciedo or Rice early Jan – wrap it up by mid jan. Two weeks left for BHA to find a replacement. Instead, it’s all about now trying to talk ourselves into how great Jorginho is… Read more »

Eric Blair

Logically you’re absolutely right, but this just makes me feel so dirty.

Shano

Lots of emotions today. If he came from Italy Juve, inter, AC etc I’d be fine.
It is what it is.. if I take my feelings out of this, he is better than elneny

Boy Bastin

Possibly, but taking feelings out of it, instead of a relatively expensive stop-gap – £12 million for a 31 year old + large wages I imagine over 18 months – we should have gone for a long-term option, shouldn’t we? It’s pretty clear given the rush for Caicedo that there was no real alternative, thought out and ready to go, more “we’ve got to get someone – and quickly”.

Santi’s Thigh Grab

This need for an Elneny replacement just appeared in the window. A DM was not on the Jan shopping list. A lot of emotions today, I get it, it’s Chelsea, I fecking hate them and everything they stand for, but at the end of the day, he’s better than Elneny.

Boy Bastin

Well, we’ll see one way or another. I hadn’t realised that he only had six months left on his contract so would have left Chelsea for nothing in the summer.

Eric Blair

My big concern is that they are absolute thundercunts. Would they really let us have him if they thought he would help us win the league?

Emi Rates

Remains to be seen if he’s better than Elneny. I hope he is. The debacle that is Willian keeps ringing in my ears though. They’ll laugh themselves silly at Chelsea and everywhere if he fails.

Shano

I know I’m sick to my stomach that if he’s more than a break glass in case of an emergency and it goes tits up this will be painful..
I honestly would of thought arsenal would’nt of wanted to deal with then re the mudryk hijack

Shano

There’s allot of games coming that we should be winning comfortably. If he allows us to manage parteys minutes by taking him off at 70 minute when we are 2 up, I’m all for it.

Emi Rates

We just knocked 11 million off Chelsea’s gazump of us over the Mudryk deal. It makes me want to puke.

I guess there are no sentiments in business.😄

Daveo

Nice how they included last season in those stats? Can you show the comparison just for this year?

Cannon and ball and arse’n’all

This is a guy who has won several trophies in England during his career – so I’m not sure how only using stats from this year versus a 21 year old at 8 times the price who has only played a handful of games in totality reinforces your point – Jorginho brings something to the squad that has been proven over many years – not just one. Sky has also done analysis of Jorg vs partey Which I have summarised: Sky have shown an infographic on partey vs Jorg – Jorg outperforms partey on all but one stat (overall completed… Read more »

Nice legs

Leon

A great move for him – cutting it in the Championship is the perfect platform to be successful in the Premiership.
With his talent and pace he could be a great asset for Norwich.

Leon

Just heard that we have signed that has been fucking donkey from Chelsea. Despite the position that we are in the league and how well we are doing we can never aspire to anything more than buying the dross from Chelsea. Edu had all of last summer and this window to find an appropriate solution and this is the best that he can come up with – a slow, limited, bone rattling dinosaur that is more liability than asset. Arsenal need someone who is decisive in the market not someone who dithers until either someone else comes in for the… Read more »

I suspect you will find he is none of those things, or we wouldn’t be signing him

Emi Rates

Once again we allow Chelsea to dump their hand-me-downs on our lawn. We even pay them for their littering.

He better fucking perform because if he doesn’t the hatred towards him and management will know no bounds

Der32

It’s not Jorginho’s fault Tits Boehly decided to hijack the Mudryk deal. Let’s stop any vitriolic behavior towards Jorginho before it even starts. If he signs, he’ll have my 100% support.

John C

The deal for Mudruk will cost them less when you spread the cost across his contract than Jorginho will cost us. What piece of business is better?

Boy Bastin

I’m not sure (and not for the first time) why people are leaving negative votes for a statement that is very probably true – whether they like to read it or not.

The whole point of closing the legal loophole in FFP rules that Chelsea were exploiting successfully by giving extra-long term contacts was precisely because it spread out a large cost over such a long period – making the annual expense very manageable.

Emi Rates

Oh how I miss the good old days of Chelsea when they were owned by Putin’s favourite oligarch. They were such a beacon of humanity and honestly under Abramovich.

Boy Bastin

Yes, but also so successful as well, don’t forget. Their fans didn’t really mind about “Comrade A” as long as he produced the trophies. Had he taken over Arsenal instead – and he did ask about it at the time of his interest in Chelsea – I would hazard a guess that at least 95% of our fans wouldn’t have cared much either. The gleam of silverware (and lots of it) is very attractive.

Emi Rates

Which makes nothing about Chelsea and its links with the ongoing genocide in Ukraine any less disgusting.

Marquinhos is getting out before that horse faced pensioner arrives from Chelsea and we help them skirt ffp… smart boy

Rayzr

I watched him lead Italy against England and win the Euro Finals! He is exactly what we need not an £80 gamble when Rice is the main target for the summer. We gonna do it this year have some faith!
