Matt Turner’s summer holidays can begin after the USA were denied a place in the Gold Cup final by Panama.
Having progressed to the semi-final stage thanks to a shootout win over Canada that included a brace of saves by the Arsenal keeper, the hosts couldn’t repeat the trick at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium as they went down 5-4 on penalties.
The game had ended 0-0 after 90 minutes before the sides traded blows in extra time.
After a frustrating second half of the season at Arsenal, Turner opted to take part in the Gold Cup despite his country using the competition as an opportunity to blood up-and-coming and lesser-known talents.
They were unrecognisable from the side that beat Canada in the Concacaf Nations League final a few weeks ago when Folarin Balogun and Auston Trusty both featured alongside other stars from Europe’s top leagues.
By and large, Turner’s recent efforts leading the young US squad have been appreciated and he’s successfully consolidated his credentials as his country’s first-choice keeper.
It’ll be interesting to see what he does next. Given Arsenal travel to Washington DC on Sunday, he may want to continue the momentum he’s built up over the summer by joining his teammates for pre-season rather than hitting the beach.
That seems to be Emile Smith Rowe’s plan even though he’s spent the summer with England’s under-21s.
Kaya Kaynak, writing for Football.London, says the midfielder, who was part of the England squad that won the Under-21 Euros, has turned down the chance for an extended holiday and hopes to feature in the upcoming trio of friendlies against the MLS All-Stars, Manchester United and Barcelona.
Emile Smith Rowe to cut short his holiday.
What for Emile?
To spend more time on the subs bench or playing for the reserves?
So much talent and now playing second fiddle to a donkey like Havertz.
It must be soul destroying.
You must be the life and soul of every party you ever found yourself at.
As if they ever get invited to any form of social activity 😂
ESR is probably trying to show the manager he is serious about pre-season and getting himself in frame for the season ahead, just like you would likely do in his position.
Troll
Thank goodness ESR isn’t so weak-minded he would stop fighting for a place just because Arsenal signed someone against whom he’ll have to compete for a spot. Must be why he’s cutting his holiday short and you’re writing weird takes on the internet.
May Emile Smith-Rowe’s sacrifice be worth the while at the end of the day. His presence can only mean a plus for the team.
As a Gooner and an American, I certainly hope Turner does stay on with the US team for the next stint. The match play will only do him and Arsenal good.
And surely after so much frustrating time in the recovery room that’s what Smith Rowe is thinking. Match play, and building match sharpness. Let’s hope he’s all well and fully past the last season’s slog.
i can see the argument, but it might do turner (and arsenal) more good to be training and competing with ramsdale (and the others) ahead of the showpiece fixtures in the US.
under berhalter, the usmnt is like playing for half strength west ham and its not going to challenge or push turner to his best.
The Usmnt as half strength west ham is generous. I think usmnt would somehow seal their relegation by march if they were in PL. I see a bright future for us, our talent pool is growing all the time, but it might be the next 20 yrs not 5 like some are hoping. At least it’s more shot stopping work for Turner than with AFC, but it’s ball at feet stuff he needs to hone to compete with Rambo.
Apart from general recognition as their best player in the tournament, Turner also wore the captain’s armband throughout, and was clearly the team’s leader. From an Arsenal perspective, all of that is good.
ESR will always remain in my opinion, the catalyst of change, that player who was the first step from us being shit and the worst arsenal I have ever known, to what we are now (the best bar the invincibles). That win at Chelsea was when it all finally began to change and ESR was the boy who made that happen. I love him for that. And no doubt that boy needs to become a man now. I sincerely hope and trust he will. More time spent training can’t hurt in that process.
Also bar Ortega (whom only a finance steroid powered club like Mancity can afford as a no. 2), Matt turner has to be the best no. 2 in the league.
Also, fuck mancity, fuck pep, fuck oil money, fuck spurs, fuck Kane n Son, fuck man untd, fuck Chelsea, fuck Boehly, fuck Garth Crooks, fuck every pundit (especially Richard keys), fuck Paul Tierny and fuck anyone who doesn’t believe.
amen!
You missed that eminently atrocious sperm-producing human, Gary Neville. Fuck him too!
I read this comment to the tune of Tool’s Aenima
he’s certainly determined and willing to put in the work- if you watched any of the games recently (even in the abysmal current usmnt setup), you’ll notice his distribution has certainly improved, particularly into the central areas of the pitch. could that be something we take advantage of next season in the cup ties? i’d certainly be a lot happier with the more technically gifted players we have at arsenal receiving that kind of pass, rather than constantly playing out to a split center half, a pressured thomas partey, or just simply down the line and out of play.

That title belongs to John Terry
Off topic, we all know the lawyers are taking some time to finish the Rice move but why is the Timber deal in the not getting announced? Are they linked together somehow from where our money is coming for these sales?
Well they’ve both had a lot of time resting on the bench (and in ESRs case injured) recently so I don’t think they need as much time on the beach as some of the others, so good decisions for both imo. Will hopefully make Turner fully ready if and when he’s called upon, which will be at the latest when the cups start. Let’s get that quadruple.
