Aaron Ramsdale has made the 10-man shortlist for the 2023 Yashin Trophy, awarded by France Football to the best goalkeeper in world football.
The Arsenal stopper is listed amongst esteemed company with Mike Maignon (AC Milan), Yassine Bounou (Seville / Al Hilal), Andre Onana (Manchester United), Ederson (Manchester City), Brice Samba (Lens), Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid), Emi Martinez (ex-Arsenal), Dominik Livakovic (Fenerbahce) and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen (Barcelona) also nominated.
In a short blurb explaining Ramsdale’s inclusion, France Football says: “To compete with Manchester City in the Premier League, Arsenal needed a great goalkeeper. His incredible double save in added time against Liverpool (2-2) at Anfield reminded us of the exceptional nature of his acrobatics.”

Ramsdale reacted by saying: “Incredible feeling to receive a nomination of this magnitude, one which I will remember for a long, long time.”
Inaugurated in 2019 and named after the famed Soviet Union goalkeeper Lev Yashin, the Yashin Trophy is voted for by former Ballon d’Or winners. Last year it was won by Thibaut Courtois.
The news will come as a boost to Arsenal’s number one while he is away on international duty with England.
Despite being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year a couple of weeks ago, there were reports overnight that claimed Mikel Arteta is seriously considering giving loan signing David Raya a run in the Arsenal first team.
The Spain international was signed to up the level of competition for Ramsdale and it’s believed the club want to see what he’s made of before the month is out. In all likelihood, Raya’s first match will come against his parent club, Brentford, in the Carabao Cup on 27 September.
I guess ederson is winning da thing… Congrats to Ramsdale for the nomination
Congrats Jordan Pickford for your nom-…oh, wait a minute
2 things:
I too was surprised at Alison’s omission, and it’s become fairly common now to have at least one controversial case like that for all awards.
I suppose they consider team success and he might have been overlooked because Liverpool didn’t get much from last season. But then, I have no idea how Lens, Fenerbahce, and co performed.
Who the fuck is Mike Maignon and what did Milan do last season?! They finished 4th, 20 points behind Napoli
They reached the CL semi final.
Napoli won the league, where’s their goalkeeper?
Come on, John. You have no idea (neither do I) whether Napoli’s keeper played a significant part in their success.
No I don’t but I do know that Chelsea, Utd and Spurs all bought new keepers and not one of them went for either Milan’s, Sevilla or Lens’ goalies.
Loris got to a World Cup final, why isn’t he included if getting to the later stages of tournaments is a qualifying factor? And again if it’s not, it’s not a credible list without Alison, because he’s Brazil’s No.1 and the best keeper in the league
Onanist = Wanker.
Onanaist = Wanker in goal.
Barthez was pretty incredible in his peak. Champions League, Euro and World Cup-winning incredible… sounds like you only know him from his time in Manchester? I don’t see anything near that level talent from Onana.
I’m going to come out in defense of Onana in the name of the new generation of “outfield goalkeepers” that he represents, which include Ramsdale and Raya. We’ve come a long way on this in a short time and the footballing public at large still hasn’t come to terms with the importance of the GK in the buildup. The trend is clear though. At Arsenal, we went from Petr Cech to Bernd Leno to Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya, each more adept with the ball than his predecessor. Onana takes this to an even higher level and is essentially usable… Read more »
The irony in all you’ve just written is that Rice’s goal was the exact type of shot De Gea used to routinely save and would have potentially earned them a draw. I’m yet to be convinced the the goalkeeper/playmaker role is the tactical master stroke some believe. Unless you’re absolutely ball dominate like City I don’t believe a trade off in the goalkeepers primary job of keeping the ball out of his net will result in better results, especially in the Premier League where every team has the ability to score if presented to them. As for United I’m at… Read more »
I think you underestimate the difference the “modern” keeper can make in the way a team plays. For example: a ball-playing keeper with a high starting position is a huge advantage in allowing your attackers to press because it limits the opponent’s ability to counter. An opposing centre-half can’t just send an aimless long ball for his winger to chase–the keeper will get that ball. The ball that springs the counter has to be an actual pass–and usually a good one (like Eriksen’s to Rashford).
I get it but as I said, if you don’t have a team that facilitates a playmaker goalkeeper sacrificing shot-stopping ability isn’t a risk worth taking.
For me Onana doesn’t improve this Utd 11 and probably makes them worse. If anything the impression I get is he’s the exact opposite of what they need and precisely the kind of character they need to get rid of, someone who in a year or so is going to start behaving like he’s doing them a favour.
Obviously I’ll be delighted if I’m proven right!
I think you underestimate the requirements of having an excellent showstopper.
It’s a building block towards the style they want to play. ETH is in a tough spot because he only has half the squad he actually wants, but Onana is a step in the right direction for them. I agree as constructed they are a borderline CL team.
In 5-10 years we’ll see a lot more keepers who combine fantastic playmaking skills with top level traditional skillsets. In the PL I think only really Allisson qualifies as elite at both right now. Kids right now are being schooled in both the modern and traditional skillsets, and the playmaking will be much more natural to them as a result. Most GKs right now will have had to suddenly learn how to be an extra outfielder part way through their career – some adapting better than others, but very few mastering it, so it’s statistically unlikely to find many who… Read more »
Another sign of how far this team has come, for its members to be getting awards and nominations left, right, and center.
I guess the next step is to have more easy award wins than ordinary nominations, because then, it would mean the team has done well.
Declan Rice will be on this list this time next season.
I meant to put this on the Ballon d’Or thread. It’s not like I think he’s going to turn into a keeper 😛
There is an Arsenal blog that I follow. Quite toxic in a manner in which it is so divisive. Especially about Rambo. He’s a solid keeper and a very good egg too. The Raya situation is not in my opinion a reflection of his competence but ambitions of the coaching team.
We shoukd be so lucky to have him.
I like Ramsdale but i think if you’re a goalkeeper that has let in the first shot you’ve faced on 7 different occasions over the last year or so, i think it’s quite right questions are asked.
Le Grove is toxic and divisive, period. Not just about Ramsdale.
I didn’t want to say his name. But he’s quite something else. You are very right about him.
Was actually referring to some of the posters on that forum. Pedro himself is a dyed-in-the-wool Gunner who does nothing but support and encourage our players
