Gael Clichy will undertake a medical at Manchester City this afternoon as he edges closer to a deal with the reigning FA Cup holders.
The French international looks likely to seal a £7 million deal and will challenge Serbian Alexander Kolarov for the left-back position at Eastlands.
Pictured exiting a Manchester restaurant last night with agent Darren Dein, son of former director David, the 25-year-old appears to have turned down approaches by the likes of Liverpool, AS Roma and Paris Saint-Germain.
It remains to be seen whether City will also negotiate a deal for Samir Nasri. The midfielder has also been hotly tipped to move to the North West with a £20 million figure mooted.
Yesterday Nasri was quoted by the News of the World confirming his anxiety at the lack of silverware since moving to Arsenal:
“With no titles under your belt, you can’t be in list for Ballon D’Or. I came to England for trophies because I’ve not won anything in my career, apart from an Under 17 European Championship in 2004.
“We already earn huge wages. The priority is to make a big career and to win titles. This is more important than everything else.”
Despite the comments, France Football claims this morning that Arsene Wenger will refuse a move for the former Marseille man as he also battles to keep hold of captain Cesc Fabregas.
Aleksandar Kolarov is Serbian, not Russian.
Did you see Diaby’s Twitter comments yesterday? In reply to someone who asked a question about transfers, Abou wrote:
“cesc is off.. nasri 50/50. clichy as well deffo off.”
It’s nice that our players can keep secrets and respect embargoes, right- or is Abou sorting the transfers out these days? He probably reckons he can get some more game time next season.
Diaby is not on Twitter
No its true ! Someone wrote it down somewhere…so it must be fact. Welcome to the impatient paranoid skeptism of Arsenal 2011 summer.
Blogs……Diaby is on Twitter……..Some player(i think Wilshere or Persie) was following him, so even i followed……………………..
Wenger must surely know we’re losing these players. I do worry at the lack of news regarding players coming in, Gervinho exlcuded. I just get thg efeeling the board/Wenger aren’t particularly fussed as long as the bank balance is healthy.
The good thing with Clichy going to City is that everybody, including the tea-lady, at Arsenal knows his catalogue of weaknesses inside out and we should be able to rip the City left flank to pieces next season – assuming we have got any players left!!
exactly my thoughts…
Good luck to him. Feels like the time is right to move on on both sides and he’s done it the right way and kept his trap shut – unlike many others…
I cannot surely be the only one who wanted Clichy to leave, has been awful for the last 2-3 seasons, never learning from his mistakes.
£7m, thank you and goodnight!
The player exodus begins,.. Money has destroyed football. it’s sickening.
He seems like a nice lad, good luck to him, never became the player we hoped he’d be. I look forward to him playing RVP onside or giving the ball away for a goal when we next meet. Think we’d have won the league in 2008 if he hadn’t messed up at Birmingham.
He’s not the best player, and he’s not the worst. I hope he enjoys his time sitting on the bench with all the other overpaid failures. He’ll soon come to love the weather and distinct lack of culture. Not to worry though, if he lives in Southern Manchester like a lot of other footballers, it’s not too far from the airport.
I’m not sure where all the [Clichy is crap] is coming from. He does make his mistakes like every other left back, not more or less but has several excellent qualities that we will miss when he is gone. 100%. Anyway I’m sad that he is going (albeit in a minority) and will miss that perpetual presence up and down the left flank, that 15 metre burst to intercept which I’m not sure anyone does as well, his big heart and an extremely loyal player who always gave it his all. I’m sure, at the same time AW knows what… Read more »
Completely agree with mooro, would have liked to see him go abroad but that should always be up to the player. Good luck to him, important for us to improve that area by bringing in a solid player though, no mediocraty
Its a shame he is going and I wish him luck as he has been a good squad player for us. Its the other greedy bastard that is getting on my tits I hope he goes to Citeeee and is a big a flop as “Manu” did he pull all the stops out last season to make sure we won. Did Nasri score enough to beat Birmingham did he step up on those cold winter nights against the boltons or wigans. DID HE ??? For all of Wenger’s failings he does look after his team and nurtures them best he… Read more »
So we can expect to lose our captain, one of our top performers last year and the player with most premierleague caps in the squad this summer.
Oh well, back to the 1990s we go.
Good riddance.
No less than 10 mil for Clichy.
Plus, look what to happened to the other two we sold.
Agree that he always put in the effort, its a shame his final ball was tosh. I do worry that with some proper defensive coaching he will push on to the next step.
[…] selling Bale and Modric is a big indication of ambition that Arsenal would do well to learn from. Clichy looks almost certain to leave as he’s reportedly undergoing a medical some time today at City. Even though it has been four […]
I hate to say this but I still believe Glichy should be kept.
He does make the odd mistakes but what he gives is thrust down the left and he plays with heart which is sadly missing in alot of arsenal players these days…
It is sad that Arsenal has become a bull-dog with its tail firmly behind its back…and getting picked on.
Where’s the heart? where’s the aggressionn…where’s the good Old Arsenal of Old!!
Actually, about the Nasri situation, I just realise that he hasn’t ask to leave the club, even it’s likely to be that. But, he still have one year, doesn’t he have the right to be not sure about renew his contract for like 5 years, and be tight like Cesc the year before? My only concern actually, is, will he be commited? As long as he is, then fine. Just play. We’re mad about players breaking contract, rebelling, etc. If he fulfill it, and then leave, well shake his hand and say goodbye.
Michael Bastos would be good. I can imagine him being linked. At a French club too which always increases the likely hood of Arsenal interest…
Apologies for the Kolarov Russian/Serbian mix-up. Corrected now.
As for Clichy…the guy has quietly gone about his business for eight years. I wish him the best of luck. Shame he has to stay in the Premier League but I’m sure he’ll get a good reception when he returns to the Emirates.
And he’s gone…..and blimey am I relieved!!
No, no. Nothing to do with Clichy (who I wish good luck to again), but I’ve been shittin meself all day that we’d get suckered into taking Wayne Bridge in some last minute, twisted, mentalist part ex deal also involving a bag of chips and a coupla Bazooka Joe transfers.
See – life could be worse…
All the best Gael!!!
The only player with a Premier League medal at our club is gone.
