Arsenal should complete the signing of Joel Campbell today, with the player’s father admitting it’s just ‘details’ in the contract which are holding things up.
Speaking to La Nation (Spanish) Humberto Campbell said, “I thought it be decided yesterday but we need to review some points in the contract.
It’s a question of looking at what they’re offering and making sure everything is ok. If so, he will sign with Arsenal”.
The young striker will be part of the Costa Rican squad for the U20 World Cup and while his father would like things to be resolved before the tournament starts on July 29th, they won’t make a hasty decision nor rule out interest from other clubs.
“The intention is for him to travel to Colombia with this whole thing resolved, but we do not want to rush things”, he said. “We will negotiate with calm and make what we believe to be the best decision.
The other deals are still standing. Until you sign, you can not rule anything out”.
However, it seems Arsenal are in pole position and the club will be anxious not to lose out on another South American target this summer having seen attacking midfielder Ricky Alvarez go to Inter Milan.
The Gunners interest in the player was first reported by 101 Great Goals and followed up by Gunnerblog.

Sorry mate but you must have missed the developments last night.
Arsenal are no longer in pole position, another PL club entered the scene last night. This is old news
Chris,
The most recent article upon which this post is based was written AFTER news of the rival EPL club became known. Arseblog news has used the most recent source – it is not old news.
Yep, what Sniff said. This is the very latest
Until ANOTHER club comes in for him ahead of us, like …
Even if we do sign him, it means Arsenal are finally world class. A world class training academy.
And if we don’t, we won’t be able to sign a 19 year old from Costa Rica.
Another excellent defensive addition at just the right age to have an immediate impact!
….. Oh wait.
Couldn’t care less if we get him or not.
You guys are very short-sighted. While we do need mature players who are ready to make an impact in the first team NOW, we also have to continue to bring in talented young players for the FUTURE. If this deal goes through, we will be getting a fast young goal scorer for a bargain price.
[…] of the summer so far. Ivory Coast striker Gervinho is expected to join however, and Arsenal are reportedly close to a deal for Costa Rican youngster Joel […]
Any idea who the other EPL club is?
Probably Sp*rs or Liverpoo.
They’re always sniffing around anyone we’re interested in. I’m sure their scouts just go around stalking ours and copying everything they do.
Thing is, occasionally we pull a fast one on them and they end up with shite like Stewart Downing.
They go:
“YES!! We got Stewart Downing! In your face Ars…oh, hang on… shit.”
Not really a case of short sighted. We are constantly told there is plenty of quality in youth/reserves as it is.
All of our resource this summer should be invested in the first team in order to actually provide a sustained title tilt..
Chris think your the one working on old news
You should work for the daily mail
Have any of you forgotten a young 19 year old called Anelka? A French boy who was recruited by Arsene from the French league displaced Wright and scored 22 goals to secure us the title in 1998?
I like the look of this boy and I can see Anelka 2 written all over it.
Well, I don’t know that I agree with that assessment of his talent. He is a promising player, though, so count me among those who are glad that Arsenal is not dropping everything else until an elusive CB is signed. The team must go on as best it can, which does not mean brooding over one spot in the squad at the expense of the rest of the club.
Apparently, the guy is having a medical tonight at London Colney.
Ok….not at London Colney.
At Cima hospital in Costa Rica. Arsenal Club officials are going to oversee it. Richard Law flew to the country to complete the signing. From the Guardian’s report: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jul/18/arsenal-costa-rica-joel-campbell
I welcome any new signing, until they turn out to be as “good” as Sylvestre or Squillaci.
He’s got a good left foot on him, looks a good deal for around £1 million, that’s a sixteenth of David Bentley (urrghh even writing his name feels wrong…)
Seen a few of his finishes, Christ he can spank a ball can’t he?
In last month’s World Soccer mag preview of Copa America, Campbell is said to have ‘lingering personality problems’! Hopefully, not a young Ademoneywhore!
Lingering? He’s 19. They are probably only just developing! Hopefully he can come to Arsenal soon where he can be enabled to mature properly into the game.
He’s had a better offer and fucked us off, just like everybody else. Awesome to say the least…oh Mr. Wenger
