Gervinho nominated for African Footballer of the Year

As the influx of exciting Arsenal-related news during the Interlull continues, Gervinho comes to the fore – head ing up a list of 10 nominees for the African Player of the Year award.

Coming on the back of a title-winning season with Lille in which he contributed 18 goals and 10 assists, and a subsequent big money move to the Premiership, the Ivorian is well worth his nomination.

The rest of the nominees are a mix of established names and up-and-coming players, most of whom have played in the Premier League at some point. Familiar faces include former winners Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o, along with Seydou Keita, Yaya Toure, and Ghanaian penalty specialist Asamoah Gyan.

The list is completed by Gervinho’s former teammate Moussa Sow, Marseille’s Andrew Ayew, Kevin Prince-Boateng of AC Milan, and QPR playmaker and computer whizkid Adel Terabyte.

Were he to win, Gervinho would be the third Arsenal player to claim the award – former Gunners Nwanko Kanu and Emmanuel Adebayor won in 1999 and 2007.

That’s Dell terabyte to you sir!

Mooro

There’s only one Zhervinyu.

Highberry

This literally made me choke with laughter. Well played sir.

Gary

I think he has a good chance of winning it, he has had a good year and is a quality player.

Where is Alex Song’s nomination? He is world class and surely deserves at least a nomination.

Mooro

Good question. He’s probably deemed too controversial after his dust-ups with Eto’o.

Ace McGoldrick

Good for him

Scribblers

A travesty, surley the forehead can be the only winner?

IT’S EVEN GOT A TUMBLR.

” Gervinho comes to the fore – head ing up a list of 10 nominees”

Very clever indeed.

I think Yaya probably has the inside track here, although Gerv has a good shot. I don’t think the voting is for a while, which means he still has a chance to impress. Let’s hope he takes that as a little bit of extra incentive…

Damn right

Hope Zhervinyu wins it. But like the Fifa award, they dont give it out to who was the stand out player in that year. More about who the voting guys think is the best footballer out of the nominated guys. Most of the time the guys who know they wont win it dont even show up for the event. Sometime back drogba was the winner of the award but because he hadn’t shown up they named keita instead and i bet AW wouldn’t give Zhervinyu a day off anyway.

As long as KPB gets to do his rather handy MJ moonwalk, I don’t think anyone outside Blatter’s inner sanctum cares who wins it.

Lulu

No Song. Best tackler in the league, obviously a deliberate oversight.

I do think the forehead jokes should stop now. Gervinho plays for The Arsenal. Insults should be kept for players of other teams.

Witoldo

I’m pretty sure he knows he has a forehead.

Or two

or three

It’s just a bit of fun Lulu. I bet they all have fun with it in the dressing room too!
I’m personally still waiting for the replica foreheads to come in at the Armoury, with added sweatband at the bottom for that seemless authentic look.

TSOTIA

Gerv has a good chance but will have to contend with Yaya.
This list is ridiculous. How is Song not on that list and Drogba is there? DD is only there because of his name. What did he do in the past year. Like fifa, like caf.
Kanu also won the award in 1996 when he played for Inter.

GU1TAR-D3MON

As an African and Arsenal supporter, I really am happy for him and I do think he stands a really really good chance of winning… But don’t know why Song was nominated…

perrygrovesworld

So, what would win – Gerv’s fivehead or toure’s fat arse? There’s only one way to find out – FIGHT!!!!!

Merlin's Panini

fore (head) he’s a jolly good fellow, and so say all of us!

Kanu

Single handedly won Nigeria the Olympic men GOLD medal after playing my part in Ajax domestic success earlier that year mate. It was not because of my heroics with Inter that I won the award, as I didnt get to kick a ball for them until 97 (no thanks to my heart surgery). The one I feel a bit unsure is that of ’99, as I know it was just my hat-trick (within 15 mins of coming off the bench) against the chavs that year that helped me steal it from Ghana’s Osei Kuffour, who had his best season ever… Read more »

Gervinho will win because he has exceptional skill. Never have I seen a player who can run so swiftly at enormous speed and then able to put on the brake suddenly and again take off with excellent speed – almost instantaneously! Its a delight to watch and his unusual act has often left defenders chasing him – very often in vain. Over here we liken his act to a swallow that similarly fly swiftly at great speed and stops at will. Our Gervinho – the ‘SWALLOW’ – not bad!

ramgooner

in two years time it is going to be between zhervinyu, song bilong and frimpong!!!DEEENCH!!!!:D

manfredi

very good signing, is growing every game, will be so important in thefuture
