After a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes against Fulham and Swansea Wojciech Szczesny hasn’t been immune from the criticism arrowed at Arsene Wenger’s misfiring squad. Indeed despite being consistently positive about Arsenal’s chances of Champions League qualification, the Pole in goal has been unfairly characterised, in certain quarters, as a man good who is good for a sound bite, but not a performance.
Luckily, the 21-year-old is not concerned with what the moaning minority (or perhaps it’s majority after Sunday) think about either him or the current malaise in N5 – he remains steadfastly confident that a top four finish is feasible despite the Gunners being five points adrift of Chelsea.
Speaking to the Arsenal website with the kind of passion you wish all footballers would have for their respective clubs Szczesny reflected on the challenge ahead and made clear there would be no bowing to future pressure.
“I am confident that we will pick ourselves up, will win games and get our position in the Champions League. I am not worried, just disappointed obviously.
Reacting to Arsene Wenger’s suggestion that a failure to qualify for Europe’s top competition would represent a failure, the Pole continued:
“I think this club should be in the Champions League year in year out so I understand the manager’s point completely.
“I think this club has enough experience to deal with that. Hopefully we can deal with all of the pressure that surrounds us at the moment and live up to the expectations because these fans and this club deserves better results than we have got in the last few weeks.
“We’ve been there before and we have reacted very well. I think we’ll do the same thing again and make sure that this club goes in the right direction to finish the season where we should.”
Taking particular heart from the prospect of Arsenal’s injury crisis easing in the coming weeks, Szczesny concluded:
“It should be a big confidence boost for us with the likes of Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna coming back and Kieran Gibbs as well.
“They are very important players for us and if we can have them back in the team as soon as possible then it will give us a lot of confidence. Hopefully they will help us get the results that this club deserves.”
Oh Szcz how I love you so….
Szcz we can.
I love the passion for the club a lot of our lads are showing. They need to tie the likes Theo and Arshavin to the goal posts in training and let the Verminator take pot shots at them.
Wouldn’t it be simpler to let them practice their shooting technique with a couple of defenders trying to get in their way (we could borrow a couple from Barnet, perhaps, having so few of our own) and every time they shoot over the crossbar the Verminator gets to smack them on the left cheek, and every time they shoot more than a foot wide Mertesacker gets to smack them on the right cheek. After a week’s practice they may not shoot any better, but with both of them suffering from huge headaches it would give the Ox and Ryo Miyaichi… Read more »
I reckon being sat on the goal line with an ankle tied to each post so your legs are open, then having Vermaelen place the ball on the penalty spot and ready himself to shoot would be one of the most terrifying experiences possible!
You’d need really long legs though
I reckon vieira’s legs were long enough to do it.
No you wouldn’t, just a long bit of rope!
Feel sorry for you Szcz, you love the club and we love you. But, the problem is the Bank Manager always sell our good player short by not signing the needed quality we need. We lost 9 points since the Jan window opened because of him not signing LB, RB and creative midfielder. I don’t buy into the shit that say, we have two LBs and two RBs out, Jenk is only 19/20 and we signed him from Charlton, if we signed another right back could have been cover for us and when sagna is back he could be a… Read more »
-Wenger doesn’t auction players , it’s the players that want to leave . It’s not Wenger’s fault Fabregas misses his Boyfriends -4 fullbacks are enough ,you just can’t just six fullbacks in 25 man squad .there won’t be any room for other players . PLUS you just can’t buy fullbacks like in a super market give 1 RB and 1 LB . that point about delisting Diaby is a good one.he won’t be fully fit until the next season , I am sure he won’t mind. But that just frees up on spot . So you see you can’t just… Read more »
Do you really count Jenks as a top four back up right back? He may come good in the future but right now he is 19/20 and need loan for a season to learn his trade at a higher level, in his current standard he is not even mid table EPL quality. So, in reality we have only one right back if you want to count Jenks as a right back you might as well count Nico too. “supermarket” here is one back up for Sagna cheap, with EPL experience and we dont’ need to free a place for him… Read more »
What’s age got to do with it? If your good enough, then you can play.
Philip Lahm, Sergio Ramos, Ashley Cole (yes, I said Ashley Cole. He was still one of the best fullbacks around), Roberto Carlos, etc… all played at a young age and became full internationals at a young age. Jenkinson looked like a very able deputy to Sagna, has a great cross on him and buckets of stamina.
Wegner Out…………
Damn. Just missed what Wenger had to say on the walkie talkie.
yeh. Get him out. Fucking Wegner. Who is he anyway?
aargh!! I fucking hate Wegner and his continental drift theory .FUCKING CUNT!!
Too right. Who needs a fucking chair as a manager: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hans_Wegner_chair_in_Pompidou,_Paris.jpg
Love his spirit and he’s a a great keeper but we keep hearing this from players in the press and the following week we don’t show up again. Not him admittedly but a lot of em do it and we just don’t get the performance. If anything that’s lacking from this team of late it’s the will to fight and grind out a result. Do the talking on the pitch and the fans may just have more belief in the team.
Very good point , action speaks louder than words, he has potential but he talks too much, djourou was doing the same thing when he was having a good spell last season and now he is the worst player to ever kicked a ball. He should spend some time watching videos of previous games and avoid the press, just shut up.
Eventually he want to delete his twitter account.
“Its just about time for me to grow up, delete twitter and focus on football! Thanks for all the support I have received here.”
