Wenger casts doubt on Wilshere involvement

It is looking increasingly unlikely that Jack Wilshere will play any part in Arsenal’s season with Arsene Wenger still refusing to put a date on the young midfielder’s return.

Giving an update on the fitness of his squad, the boss made clear that Francis Coquelin would be the first of his injured players to return, but given the French utility man is himself a ‘few weeks’ from featuring in the first team it leaves a shadow over Wilshere’s involvement before the summer.

“Coquelin will be the quickest back. It will be a few weeks until he is back in training,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

“It is difficult to set a deadline on Jack. We go week by week with him. But his last scan was very good so we don’t have worry anymore. It is about progress and fitness, however I can’t set a date.”

In other news Abou Diaby has just completed an hour for the reserves in their 1-1 draw at Liverpool. The French international scored Arsenal’s equaliser, but picked up a knock on his ankle in the process. While he continued for a further 11 minutes, he was withdrawn from the field by Neil Banfield on the hour mark as planned.

Thomas Vermaelen, despite getting a kick on his calf in the Newcastle game is fit, while Andre Santos and Sebastien Squillaci are also available for selection tomorrow night against Everton.

Given the relative healthiness of Arsene’s squad at the moment (comparatively speaking) there’s little point rushing Wilshere back if he’s not 100 per cent fit. Indeed, it almost seems safer to keep Jack from tickling the fancy of the England set-up ahead of the Euros in the final weeks of the season. The last thing we want is our young dynamo having to carry the hopes of a nation at a tournament they’ve no chance of winning.

Cygan's Left Foot

Look on the bright side, Squillaci been injured a lot this season too.

Mikal

nooo. i miss jack on the field!! not good for England neither..

theoriginalmatt

meh

StrongTackleBacarySagna

Wisdom suggests we list the return of Jack Wilshire as something to look forward to in the Fall. That’s okay in my book.

Nick

Well said! I honestly won’t be upset if he doesn’t return this season as I’d rather have him at 100% and ready to go at the start of next season. I don’t want him suffering another relapse because he was rushed back too early (again)

“The French international scored Arsenal’s equaliser, but picked up a knock on his ankle in the process.”

From the ball?

TAMCK

Knowing Diaby, it was probably a runaway milkfloat or a cloud of killer bees.

EDgooner4ever

Or some carbon dioxide in the air..

Matt F

Fuck’s sake. Brad Jones, you absolute twat. Diaby’s ankle is like a magnet for shit tackles.

jay

jheez that looks nasty, hope he’s ok.. fucking cursed that guy, I swear

goonero

a few more of the horror tackles hes suffered,

Jomo

I’d prefer him to take his time and get a full recovery, rather than be rushed back and maybe do more long term damage. Our central midfield looks pretty strong right now with ramsey, arteta, song, benayoun, rosicky.

So take your time Jack, and come back stronger next season when we gonna launch an attack on that premiership ttile!

Grin

he’s going to the euro’s whether he plays or not unfortunately, lets just hope he stays fit and england go out early (jesus someone shoot me)

Pearson

I hope Wilshere plays, is the star of the show and him Theo, Kieran and that other Arsenal boy Fabrice score loads and loads of goals and England win the tournament and after that they come back they show The Arsenal how easy it is to go a season unbeaten again.
Too many Roy of the Rovers comics perhaps?

Trevor

I would just like to see one season with no major injury! Wilshere this season, Vermaelen last season. I know all teams have injuries, but it makes you think what “if”?

Jermaine Pedant

Out for the season. I’m sick of that phrase.

adi

Diaby is injured again? Was it a hard fall on a cushion this time? Or did he get hurt by the breeze?

emma

Watched diaby today in the reserve against Liverpool reserve. If ony he could put in a string of matches and remain injury free he could be one of the best midfielders arsenal has ever had. You could see why Arsene is so patient about him. He is that a good box to box midfielder

Shavid

Diaby will come good.
He isn’t injured again, he came off after an hour as planned.

adi

Just to clarify, i’m actually a diaby fan. His injuries are getting increasingly frustrating though

Shavid

@adi i agree they are incredibly frustrating. But we have to trust in what he said the other week about his biomechanics being changed as a result of his ankle injury in 2007, and his muscles compensating as a result. It looks as though that has finally been rectifyed by the surgery he’s had. I would expect him to pick up the odd knock here and there while he gets back into the swing of training day-to-day. In fact i don’t expect to see the best of him until next season now. I think he can have a positive impact… Read more »

Red Cannon

And RvP’s season after season of injuries!

Torgeir

Wonder how good Wilshere would be if he had this whole season to develop his talent even further.

Red Fred

I think it would be better if Jack didn’t play this season (only 6 weeks left) bar maybe a few substitution appearances. He wouldn’t get picked for the Euros based on that, but would be fine and fresh for the Olympic team in July which would act as a great pre season for the next campaign.

Runcorn Gooner

Its looking even more likely that Jack could be
the classic LANS for next season

Marcus Theobald

You can guarantee that if Jack doesn’t go to the Euro’s, which is a big if, he’ll get picked for the Olympics, which finished about 10 minutes before the season starts

Dick Swiveller

Y’see, I actually believe Jack could be good enough to carry England to an actual trophy or at least the little Arsenal nugget they’ll soon have…2 years time with Theo/Jack/Ox/Gibbs in the team we’ll have an Arsenal-trained nucleus to take the fight to the top teams. For now though, keep telling him he’s injured until the Euro’s are over, we don’t want him broken before next season.

Dave Gooner

Shame.

But if we can keep putting in the performances of the past few weeks, we can still push on.

Feel sorry for Jack though. As well as a great season with the Gunners, he has also probably lost out on stratospheric (no pressure!) performances in an England shirt.

You just know he wants it all. Next year Jack. And plenty of them.

zak

I’ll never understand all of the love Diaby receives. Maybe it’s because he rarely ever plays these days, but people conveniently forget that he is one of the laziest, most frustrating players Arsene has signed. He slows down play every time he receives the ball, takes far too many touches, and gives the ball away just as much as he keeps it. Rarely does he even contribute to scoring moves. He is also terrible defensively, and couldn’t give a single shit about tracking back or marking a man. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched him nonchalantly jog… Read more »

Spooner

I’m pretty sure he’s bossed it completely against Chelsea before now.

goonero

Shame on you! As long as hes loyal to us we will be loyal to him, we care about him because were not icy bastards who are unsympathetic to the tragic way in which his very promising career has been cut short.
conveniently forgotten, yeah right, we just remember that hes the same diaby that could do this.

Der Springer

Your criticism may be valid but it is a bit unfair to judge him based on the in and out nature of his appearances. A player needs to get in a run of games to find his rhythm and match sharpness. (e.g. Rosicky)
To be honest, his appearances have been so infrequent that I have forgotten whatever opinion of him I might have formed so I will have to trust others (Arsene most importantly) that he is worth waiting for.

SDDutchGooner

RE: the olympics, don’t we have to agree to let him go to the olympics as it’s not a FIFA tournament?

Rodders1971

I think we could do with Jack having a ‘little setback’ otherwise Twitchy or A.N. Other mug (whoever is engerland coach at the time) is bound to pick him for the Euros & he’s sure to get injured…selfish I know but fuck the national team,Arsenal come first…(and 2nd…and 3rd…)

Witoldo

Or, more accurately, fourth.

Anon

oh, how funny is that.

Xxxrob

RegArdless of the context fuck it makes me laugh when I read the name “twitchy” haha that guy has the ugliest head I think iv ever seen…

TH legend

Think that jack will eventually rise to be as good a cpt for us as Tony was 😉 he’s got our DNA and loves this club
Also let’s hope Diaby when is free from injury and back to full fitness will repay Arsene and us fans and he’s in the same way as RVP has and combines with jack to give us the most terrifying MF in Europe and bring us back the glory which we deserve 🙂 🙂

Anon

SZCZ would be a strong competitor for the armband as well. How he reacted to Koscielny’s own goal some games back which we eventually won was class captain material.

[…] of Wilshere, Arsene has played down talk of his return, which does cast doubt on him being involved this season at all. Maybe they do have a fixed date in […]

Murtem

don’t want to be a spoiler but I wish Jack to not recover before Euros.knowing England they are definitely going to have a disastrous tournament. And if he gets injured for that Crappy team then its not good for us Gooners. Just saying though

superman

These rumours of jack failing an in-house drugs test are starting to be more believable. Watch him recover just as the year ban is up
