Podolski – “Arsenal is the right move”

New boy Lukas Podolski has said that moving to Arsenal is the right thing for his career, and he re-iterated his desire to win trophies with the Gunners.

Speaking at a press conference held by his current club FC Cologne, the German international revealed he had thought a great deal about his next career move and signed for Arsenal despite not having traveled to London and only having telephone contact with Arsene Wenger. He also said he turned down offers from other clubs, saying Arsenal was the only one that really interested him.

“I’ve long thought about how we go from here,” he said, “and the question was only a top club like Arsenal. I’m ready to take this step and I am convinced that it is the right thing. I’ll find my place at Arsenal.

“The goal is to win titles.”

Podolski has spent most of his career at Cologne but made a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in 2006 before returning ‘home’ in 2009. It would be fair to say that his time at Bayern wasn’t a success, which lead many to speculate not just about his playing ability but his character amidst accusations of poor attitude.

But Podolski played down any suggestions he’d struggle when out of his comfort zone at Cologne, saying, “I’m more experienced and mature than in Munich.”

Cannot wait to hear the 60,000 or so at the Emirates singing “Lu Lu Lu, Lukas Podolski – es gibt ein fußball Gott.” =]

Ben Savage

Goon Squad

You can easily find the chant on Youtube by searching “Podolski Song”. Though it’s a bit cheesy, the hook is bloody infectious so let’s welcome him with it!

Voldermort

His goal is to win titles .. Let’s hope the board has the same ambition. Another couple of quality signings and rvp’s signature and he may well get his wish.

The invincible arse

Me gusta, Mr.Troll face.

I hope Santos gets along with this gay!

Looks like Mr. Podolski might be getting some of Merlin’s Poonani

Merlin's Panini

erm, not when Merlin’s a guy he won’t.
And it’s Miyaichi, not Miyachi.

Ryo's MIYAICHI

Alright mate keep ya beard on.

Merlin's Panini

Just on a different subject, did anyone hear Alan Brazil’s ‘outrage’ on Talkshite of The Sun’s Mickey taking of Roy Hodgsons pronounciation of the letter R. He was highly offended by a piece that substituted every R for a W. If they’d done it just once it would have been acceptable but as it was done repeatly it was out of order apparent. I believe John Terry’s QC is also adopting the same moral stance and will argue that he only called Antonio Ferdinand a b**** c*** once (alladgedly) so it’s ok.

I’m looking forward to the 1st time Woy has to mention Englands current world ranking. . . .

I’ve said it before – the best possible chant this guy could get would be to the tune of “More, more, more”.

Signing him make me look forward to Euros now to take a glimpse of him playing with a better team mates and opponents. If you look at it, maybe the policy of Arsenal may be to sign a great player whom he is a great friends with an Arsenal players. Like Poldi and Merte, Koscielny and Giroud, Sagna and M’villa, Vermaelen and Vertonghen (But seems to lean to Spurs) or Gervinho and Hazard (I don’t like his personality though). Maybe Eisfield and Goetze also become friend when they spend their time at the physio in Dortmund. We’re lucky that our… Read more »

If we could get Kompany for Vermaelen I would be very happy!

Kennny Szczesny

I like how we’re developing a nice little German contingent. Hop his and BFG’s experience rubs off on Gnabry

Nick

Very true and don’t forget Eisfeld!

Germany is IMO one of the hotbeds of youth talent. Look at all the young and very impressive German players recently. I hope Arsenal continue to scour the Bundesliga for top talent.

Between Marko Marin, Mario Gomez, Mario Gotze, Boateng, Marco Reus, Podolski, Erik Durm, Thomas Muller, Toni & Felix Kroos, Sven Bender the German talent is definitely there. Plus other young talent playing in Bundesliga like Kagawa, Lewandowski, etc. Lots of talent to choose from

feygooner

I love Thomas Mueller.

He makes me happy 🙂

jeff

Hope Ze Germans win the CL too!

Naija Gunner

Dench baby!

This guy is good when he talks, “my goal is to win trophies with Arsenal” I loooooove that, hope all the other arse have the same goal.

COYG!!!

Crabbypatts

Thy shall have titles Poldi haha. Personally I think the same team + Poldi and Wilshere are title challengers, we can’t possibly fit in Hazard or M’Vila without letting somebody go which would be crazy cuz our team has gelled.

goonero

agreed, besides, signing M’Vila would kill our coq!

Gunsen Gurner

I think we should get M’vlla. He seems the type who’d want to leave in a few years anyway.Buy him now for 18m.Let him play for a few years, help us win some TROPHIES!! whilst using Coq as a utility player. Then sell him to the highest bidder and truly UNLEASH THE COQ!!!!

TeeCee

@Gunsen Gurner.
We have a leash on our Coq? Is that legal these days?

CAGooner

Poldi is a fine addition to our team but I keep reading rumors about getting Clint Dempsey. I think he’d be the best acquisition because of his versatility in where he can play, and because he proved his bona fides in the Premier League.

ramgooner

exactly my thoughts mate.i think dempsey will happen only if chamakh leaves us or goes on loan.park will surely leave and we have the likes of afobe and maybe campbell to fill up.dempsey would make a perfect mix.besides he is a proven PL player and is also versatile and he doesn’t need much ‘adapting period’.

badaab

Not to mention Mr. Dempsey would certainly boost shirt sales here in the States!
Dempsey offers versatility in the same way that Yossi and Rosicky currently do, and would make a solid addition if we can shift some of the dead weight (ie Vela, and big Nick).

CAGooner

He signs and I’m getting that shirt!

Red Cannon

Hell, I might get an Arsenal shirt made with Dempsey on it right now. Maybe it would help get the board moving!

Nick

Speaking as an unofficial ambassador of the US (self-appointed), I’d love to have Dempsey playing for my favorite team. He has experience, loads of talent, and is in the prime of his career. We would definitely be a better team with Clint as a member

dannrodeo

Nt sure how true this comment is but it was reported to have been said by PODOLSKI:”spurs wanted me in january, but i didnt know who they were”if he truly said that….he is already a legend to me

CAGooner

At that rate, he’ll go down as an Arsenal legend!

Spooner

Just a joke from last season, CRF. I don’t think anyone would genuinely criticise the signing of Podolski, and apparently he is sometimes deployed out wide.

TBF I’ve only seen him live in a friendly or international, but his shots to goal ratio is phenomenal, so I’m also excited that we’ve got him from next season..

Spooner

I can’t believe he bought a 26 year old winger and not a centre half, the cunt.

Welcome to the Arse, Poldi 🙂

Cygan's Right Foot

If by winger you mean striker then yes.
If by winger you mean winger then no.

GunnerDareMKD

My only worry after poldi signed for us is RVP contract extension believe me that would be massive signing iv rvp extend his contract anything else is irrelevant like dampsey m’villa vantroghen etc, imagine if rvp leaves where would that take us only backwards our 3 best players leave us in 1 year that would send bad message to rest of our players, every year we sell our best players no one will be motivated, RVP contract is vital poldi will be a good player but he is not rvp and both of them playing together could win us trophies next… Read more »

John

If we can get Demspey and Vertonghen then we are good to go. I think Jack will play behind the striker with Rosicky as competition/backup. Its about having quality to step in for injuries etc. ————–(Fabinski)——— —————-Sczcnesy———– (Jenkison)-(Vertoghen)–(Djourou)–(Santos) Sagna—–Kozzer–Vermanlen– Gibbs (good to see him back) ———-(Coqulein)—-(Ramsey) ————-Song—-Arteta——– (Oxlade)—-(Rosicky)—-(Gervinho) Walcott—–Wilshere——-Podolski ————-(Demspey)—- ————-V persie——– V Persie could move back into the hole with Demspey or Podolski not really sure on Gervinho. That squad could win things but also need a desire to give 100% every game and 100% for your teamates. Fiannly get rid of deadwood Mannone, Hoyte, Squallci, Denilson, Vela, Bendther,… Read more »

Gossip Gooner

Nice.
Only I’d like to see Mertesacker in there somewhere. I think he’d be a suitable back up for either kos or vermaelen. But I’d actually add him as Kos/mert/verma. (Djourou/Mert) works fine as well.

Andrew

Only problem is both Vertogen and Dempsey are currently playing first team football and are not going to be short of offers should they decide to leave those clubs. Why would they come and sit on our bench? And where is Mert?

Cygan's Right Foot

Better chance to fight at the top of the premier league table and champions league football

ramgooner

why would it mean ‘they have to sit on the bench’.both vertonghen and dempsey are first team quality and it’s up to them to earn their place in the first team.if our aim is to challenge in all competitions next season then it is important we have such players in the squad.
also,i seriously don’t know what wenger is going to do with diaby.i mean the guy is injured again.he is definitley a liability.i am losing faith in this ‘he has potential’ talk.

Merlin's Panini

who’s Fiannly, and why is it his job to get rid of the dead wood?

atid

Well a number have.players have to leave.either permanently on loan or be delisted especially if we are to sign more. From the current 33 players over 21 i expect first out the door will be benayoun followed swiftly by almunia hoyte and murphy who are all out of contract. that will leave us with 29 and to bring the squad down to 25 i expect eastmond botelho denilson and vela to be the next ones. from there it gets a little harder fabianski mannone djourou squillaci diaby arshavin park chamakh bendtner are the players that i expect wenger to be… Read more »

Fucking shit night!

Spurs are now right up behind us, waiting for us to slip up. And they’ve got two fairly easy games. Hopefully Newcastle will drop points against City and Everton, but they could catch us too. We’ve put ourselves under pressure by only taking two points from the last nine. That defeat against Wigan has really cost us.

We should beat Norwich, but that last game away to West Brom is the sort of match that all season long have cost us points. If we miss out now then it will be fucking frustrating.

ramgooner

we are not going to fall back.’arry is still twitching under pressure.it’s just that he’s not showing it outside.
this is ‘our’ motherfucking season to show em all that we are back with a bang.
ps:’our’ can also be replaced with ‘wenger’s’

TomC

Agreed. Stressful but it’s in our control. Need to win the next two. Simples.

Dev

Very surprised that Wenger hasn’t even met the fella. I’m sure he’ll succeed in Arsenal. I doubt he’d have come to Arsenal had he not been assured that RVP was probable to stay.
