Arsenal have confirmed that the club will participate in the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup at Southampton’s St Mary’s stadium on July 14th.
The round-robin tournament will see Arsene Wenger’s squad pitched against Nigel Adkin’s newly promoted side and Scottish giants Rangers in two 45 minute games, with further ‘entertainment’ being provided by the procession of the Olympic torch around the arena.
Arsenal’s first game with Rangers will be at 6.45pm, before they face Southampton at 8pm. It remains to be seen what type of team the club choose to send to the South Coast, although with fixtures falling just after Euro 2012 and ahead of the London Olympic Games it is likely to be a mix of reserve and youth players.
The Gunners pre-season preparations will properly kick off at the end of July with the first team squad travelling to Hong Kong, Malaysia and China before a match against yet to be confirmed international opposition in Nigeria.
Round-robin tournament?
So our captain’s just going to sit on the pitch and eat lots of pies then?…
…I’ll get my coat.
hmmm so this is a competition designed to celebrate the life of a foreign national who put millions into the host club, propelling it to future success?
at least somebody in the club has a well developed sense of irony, then
On the other hand, consider the Rangers who had millions sucked from them on account of incompetent management.
WHY CAN’T KRONKE JUST GIVE US £600M SO WE CAN BUY ALL THE CUPS!? WE KNOW HE’S GOT IT! WAAAH! WAAAHH!
Aha! Saints ey? Nice!.
Then after the game we snap up yet another “walcott-chambo” type of player.
You wenger you.

Hopefully I can get some game time.
You spend more time on this blog than working on your defensive inadequacy! But yeah you’ll get some game time mon compagnon français!
I’m already the best there is, why would I need to practice??!?!?!?!
Of course you will! Once we sell you to the Saints or Scots that is.
Does it mean that arsenal coming 2 nigeria has’nt confermed yet?
As far as I know they are definitely going, they just haven’t announced the opposition yet.
No it hasn’t been *CONFIRMED* yet. Just a few details before it’s announced. Pretty sure it’s a done deal though.
I like the date of the games. Ideal for us to catch a glimpse of all our new signings (presuming wenger doesn’t plan to drag it till the final day again).
Hope Podolski scores so we can hear that ”Lu Lu Lu Lukas Podolski” song blasting. God that song’s addictive.
Scottish “Giants” Vs Big Friendly Giant
Finally, chance for Ju-young Park to start as our one-top number 9 striker and even play the full match!
he’ll probably find he’s fallen behind a garden snail in the pecking order or something. I think we’re destined never to see him play a full game for Arsenal.
He’s korean, he’l probably eat the snail to ensure maximum game time.
Arsenal in nigeria? Beware of bomb blast!
Arseblogger, I know we don’t pay anything for the blog and this site and for that I’m very grateful. However, I did just see an advert for matchday hospitality at Manchester United, complete with a picture of Wayne Rooney’s overhead shinstrike, and I am not impressed.
Adverts are selected based on user’s browser history (duh). Were you just on a Man Utd site beforehand?
I reckon with a couple of big names signings we could win this one.
why do I have such an overwhelming feeling of “meh” about this news?
45 minute matches? eh?
against Southampton and Rangers?
I wish we had a real meaningful competition to play in. You know, like the Emirates Cup…
realiise u all seemed to want bigger teams but to be honest as a saints fan i was looking forward to shall i say “different european opponents” however we enjoyed the format last year it was quite refreshing for pre season………cheer up and give it a go!!!!
