Francis Coquelin says he’s determined to take his chance at Arsenal, and is sure he has the quality to do so, but reveals he’ll look elsewhere if he hasn’t established himself in the next 6 months.
The French midfielder impressed last season, making a total of 17 appearances and would have made more only for two ill-timed hamstring injuries. He was picked on the final day of last season in a game which Arsenal had to win, and he caught the eye with his dynamic, energetic performances.
He has yet to feature this season however, which is giving him pause for thought. Speaking to L’Equipe he said, “I haven’t played in the first three games. That makes you think a bit. But I know I’ll get a chance and I’ll take it.”
Coquelin revealed talks with Arsene Wenger and said that the manager had told him he’d be competing for a first team spot for the season ahead.
“In July I went to see the coach and he told me I am a full member of the team and that he was counting on me. It showed me they trust me. Song went to Barcelona and they didn’t buy any defensive midfielders.”
But he sounded a warning that unless he’s playing regular football he’ll consider his options.
“At 21, I can no longer afford to be patient. This is the year where I must break into the team at Arsenal. I’ll give myself six months, then I’ll reassess. If I see no way in, I’ll look elsewhere. I know that I have qualities to break through at Arsenal.”
And at a time when many bemoan having players on the books that we can’t shift, it shouldn’t be an issue when a young player wants to play above all else.
Let’s hope that he continues his development at Arsenal. Arseblog News likes the look of this particular one, and when it comes to Coqs we’re quite the experts, let me tell you.
*insert ‘I love coq’ joke here*
Penetrate coq joke here.
Brace Yourself…
Coq jokes are coming
*cumming
Better title would have been “Coq wants action.”
Arsenal youngster worried about being Coq blocked…
I’ll get my coat. 😛
I have a feeling that this is the year Le Coq will rise above the others..
He’s sounding pretty coqky.
When do we play chelsea again?.
Le coq needs to stand up to the cunts!
good to see that he’s ambitious and competitive, last season he made a good impression. I hope he doesn’t get over his head though, he shouldn’t be whining at now having featured yet when there’s Arteta in front of him. He’ll get his chance and then he must prove his worth, but giving himself a deadline of 6 months isn’t gonna do him any favors. With Arteta being as old as he is, he should be aware that he’s in the pole position for getting deep-lying midfielder spot long term (along with Jack, but he can play all the MF… Read more »
* NOT having featured yet
I would be whining if I was as good as Le Coq and see that avrage at best same age Ramsey getting game time ahead of me.
I know you will say they don’t play in the same position, but in any position Le Coq plays he would do better than Ramsey. I have hight hope for this boy but no hope for Ramsey other than being an average squad player or midtable team starter. Just as I did with Denlison, Bendtner and the likes. In football there is something you can never teach.
Couldn’t agree more, i like Ramsey but sometimes i think he gets the sympathy vote (for obvious reasons) but i just cant see him developing into a world class player, where as the Coq seems to have that special something which could see him develope into something really special….however he should be patient cause if he leaves, its only going to be a step down to a smaller club.
The thing I found sad is him saying “at 21, I can’t afford to be patient.”
Fucking ancient already, he better get on with his life! I know a footballer’s career is short, but Tom Cleverly (I know he’s quite shit, but still) was playing for Watford and Wigan while he was 21. Plenty of time for le coq.
the Coq will surely rise…
I suspect arseblog put up these Coquelin articles just so we can make coq jokes 🙂
Coquelin is showing some gumption but has trod this path before (if the reports are real)…threatening through the media and maybe it’s time for Wenger and Bould to take him out behind the woodshed….Wenger could translate so young Fancis is left without illusions that “Song was not replaced because of players like you, but you need to be patient as “Arteta is better” at the moment but is also almost 30….. SO… if you shut up, sit down, watch and learn from him and take your chances this year you might just be Arsenal’s deepest lying midfielder next year and… Read more »
Le Coq is great. Up the Arse!
Strong, and confident lad. Handsome as well.
Can firmly say that Coq is hugely popular with the girls
Now is the time for him to be patient, not impatient. He must continue to work hard in training, show he’s dedicated and focused and his chance will come. Running off to the media and making vague threats will not help his cause.
Several other players in recent years took a similar tack of mouthing off to the media and they all got punted into the long grass.
Dont we all just love the coq!, well perhaps not most of us. But we do love the arse and the coq needs to be in it!.
He means that he’ll go out on loan unfortunately the interview was edited poorly. The guy just signed a four year contract.
I think it’s good for the Coq to have Arteta and Giroud around him to point him in the right direction.

I really hope we can keep him and frimpong happy. arteta is currently the man playing dm in our new 4132 formation. however is approaching 30 in a couple of seasons cqouelin and frimpong will be ready to really compete for that role.
There are more than enough games in a season for Le Coq to have his chance. Sub appearances, league cup, champions league dead rubbers and home games against lesser opposition should seem him feature. If Arteta gets injured I don’t think Arsene would think twice about sticking Le Coq in.
Why is it that our players tend to threaten through the media and other sources when it comes to getting their chance in the first team? It’s all the more frustrating and annoying when Arsene has proved to be at the forefront of giving players, especially young players, their chance. You don’t really hear this going on from other top 4 clubs (yes I know you do a little but not compared to ours) but clubs such as the northern Muffers (dirty ex spud Berbatoss only moaned when he left) Citeh’s Adam Johnson, just left. Our players have a tendency… Read more »
@Merlins P…LOL..
When it comes to Coq, well you’ve got to ease him in gently and let him gradually build up momentum until he becomes the thrusting, explosive midfielder we all know he can be…
I’m a little dismayed that le boss hasn’t seen fit to stiffen up the midfield with some coq, but arsene will know when to slip him in.
All jokes aside, le coq will likely get a start in the cup games, particularly the early fa cup rounds and the league cup. He may even get a run in the champions league group stages towards the end when the fixture list piles up. He would do well to watch mikel arteta and learn from him, as mikel is playing the way le coq needs to.
I do like the Coq, but seriously… 6 months?! He’s 21 years old ffs. It’s a really great sign that he has ambition and wants game time, but if he wants to be playing at or near the top of ANY good European league, patience will be something he definitely needs. Learn from the older experienced pros around you and take your chance when it comes, which it undoubtedly will. He said it himself… we sold Song and didn’t replace him, what’s that if not an opportunity?! Wind your neck in.
Can we bring back David Seaman just so we can take the jokes further?
Maybe we could ask Julian Dicks and Stephan Kuntz to come out of retirement too. 🙂
Butt, bumstead and dickov
Ha ha, Clit Dempsey perhaps?
He must be sitting there and looking at how much theo, ox, rambo and gibbs have been fast-tracked to the first team and wonder if he came in the wrong era.
Back in the ‘Aliadiere days’ his passport was spot on but now he holds the wrong passport. I read somewhere recently AW boasting how he was going to make his first team 65% english.
That aside the guy can leave the emirates whenever he wants. He owns a stadium in Tallinn. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Le_Coq_Arena
