Hodgson confirms Jenkinson’s England choice

Carl Jenkinson’s international future lies with England, according to boss Roy Hodgson.

The youngster trained with the squad on Sunday as they prepared for their game against Poland at London Colney, and despite representing Finland at underage level, it seems Jenkinson has plumped for the country of his birth.

Via the BBC, Hodgson confirmed that the former Charlton man had chosen to play for England and that his call-up was not simply to rule him out of an international future elsewhere.

“He didn’t take a lot of convincing. We had a problem with Kyle Walker and wanted a full complement in our training session, so we called Carl up. He was in my thoughts anyway.

“I invited him to train with us knowing full well he couldn’t take part in this game, but it gave me the opportunity to sit down and ask him the question.

“I don’t want to trick him to play for England in a few minutes in a game to block him, but he had to make a decision because we’re very interested in him, even if the competition is tougher to get him into the England team rather than the Finland team. He made it very clear he wanted to play for England.”

Because of his Finnish connection the FA must wait for international clearance and with England’s next game not until 2013 it could be some time before he makes his debut.

However, all going well he could be part of a generation of English Arsenal players who could be in the team for years. He’d join Gunners Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and even Theo Walcott (should his contract wrangles be sorted) in the national side, and given their age they could play together for club and country for years to come.

bad news or good news?

goonero

going with good on this one, playing along side his friends and club mates gibbs wilshere the ox and theo will be good for him and maybe good for englands arsenal based future.

Wale

Bad news coz he will not get to travel back to finland every once in a while to meet up with the team. We all like flying don’t we?…..lol j.k

Good to have jenko here, could really work at ridding this England squad of spud walker. Welcome.

ETID

I would say good news cos he is unlikely to play as many internationals for england as he would for finland, which means from a selfish point of view one less burned out player. now we.need frimpong to make a similar decision.

Dr Baptiste

Frimpong pledged his future to Ghana in 2011, so I doubt we’ll see him in an England shirt

goonero

well, if you consider that finland won’t be making the world or euro cup, England will have more games to play, and odds are that soon enough at the rate he is developing jenkinson will be play in most if not all of those games.

jeff

Time to kick Johnson and that Sp*d out of RB position, then.

Borneo Gooner

Those overrated cunts. Jenko for the right back for many years to come!! He deserves them after a great run of form this season. So impressed with that boy.

As an England fan I personally think this is great news. Although the older I get the less international football interests me! I think the main reason is I remember how THAT united side we all loved to hate dominated the England national team at the time, and even in years we beat them to the title some of my united-supporting pals (Huge numbers of them; being as I’m in the Man U heartland of Essex) used to use our lack of British players as something to go on at me about. Now our British core is arguable stronger than… Read more »

The only downer is mong shawcross being called up. Terry just left so I think we need to start cleansing this Engerlund squad with pure DNA that is of Arsenal. Jenks, gibbo, chambo, walcott now if only squillaci could switch nationality to England then we would be all set!

Gandalf

If he keeps up his recent rapid progress he could be a starter in the near future, its not that Kyle Walker is anything to cheer about.

Insight

Good decision by Jenkinson. Now, is this interlull over yet?

hieuving

Yeah good play, Hodgson.

North Bank Gooner

playing with the worlds best can only improve him. lets hope he avoids improving our international injury record, its good enough as it is!

Spooner

I don’t think there’s much danger of him playing with the world’s best.. The choices were Finland or England!

Maybe we’ll get closer to being the best with a strong Arse contingent.

Wengers Trench Coat

Fuck off inter-lull!!!!

Rocket Diary

FA has woken up to a fact. The only way to improve Team England’s ball retention and technical ability is to play a lot of Arsenal players.

Rohan Sood

Just return him without injuring.

west belfast gunner

Get arteta a cap for England too , the less actual Englishmen in the team the better ! Yous might actually win something llf

Shit. Well, I don’t think he can be trusted to start for the arsenal anymore. I mean, he just showed some pretty piss-poor judgment here eh?

Seb

I don’t see him getting above kyle walker, have fun sitting on the bench for England aswell, should have chosen finland

Dick Law

He reminds me of James May.
