According to L’Equipe, Ligue 1 side Evian made an attempt to bring Sebastian Squillaci to the club this January but were unable to do a deal because of the player’s wages.
Although he has just 6 months left on his current Arsenal deal, and admitted himself he could leave during the transfer window, it seems salary at Arsenal is not commensurate with a move to a club with such limited financial resources.
Speaking earlier this month, the former French international said, “Marseille, Nice, Monaco, Bastia or Ajaccio are clubs that speak to me. I am 32 years old. I still have two or three good seasons left. On the French Riviera or elsewhere. I will choose depending on the opportunities that arise.”
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has ruled out any further departures from the squad … unless new players come in. In an interview with Arsenal Player he was asked if anyone was likely to leave, and he said, “At the moment no. We have a good squad, a balanced one. At the moment nobody can go out, unless we buy somebody.
“At the moment our focus is to keep everybody. In every position we have two players. Three is too many and one is not enough.”
Two’s company, three’s a crowd and poor Ollie Giroud is left to play with himself.
Stop that.

Hat tip @jamiedalton82
I am really tired of this. How long do we keep blaming Stan and Ivan??..Its crystal clear that money is there to spend. If Arsene thinks that the current lot is good enough then he has completely lost it in my opinion and should just leave. I am greatful for what he has done but right now his stubbornness is costing us.
His stubborness means he will never leave on his own, and we know that he wont get fired either. i just hope they wont give him another supermoneyforAW contract.
Honestly guys, dont want to start a debate here, but it seems to me Arsene is limited by the board and it is not the other way around. Stan and Ivan for me are the cause of the financial restrictions at Arsenal. On the prior subject of ticket prices are you going to tell me it is Arsene who decides that too??? Come on, it is clear that we are a business not a club, and it is those who are running the club as a business at fault, not the man operating the Football Team. Couldnt even keep RVP,… Read more »
@3 points in the toilet:
“His stubborness means he will never leave on his own, and we know that he wont get fired either.”
Nice summary of the situation. Either side seems to be afraid to make a courageous step. It’s inaction, but we can sell it as “consistent approach” or “tradition”.
I’m just annoyed by the latest Arseblog news on transfers, let’s face it, the club is not going to make a serious singing and, yet again, I was led into believing that the penny had dropped this time. Groundhog day galore. Every year. We’re happily following.
off course we pay him so much more than he is worth that nobody will give him the same wages. he does nothing except go to training and being a bitch and still earn 50k a week
Well, in this case I doubt Evian could have afforded Squillaci even if he earned £30,000 a week. The other thing to note is that at the time he arrived, nobody could have anticipated how useless he would be. He was an experienced defender with international experience and a solid record. Didn’t have the benefit of hindsight.
None of that is to say that there aren’t problems in the wage distribution, though.
Ditto. Anybody notice that Liverpool got rid of Sahin today?
Wengers recent comments is proof enough that he’s been high been kindw losing his competitive esge sometime now. Talking about he has a good squad, two players on each positio?? Haha e.t.c. Wenger is okay, just that his employers have made him way too comfortable and where we are right now, no one needs to feel comfortable down from the players all the way to the manager. If we are to push for fourth and f.a cup, champions league everyone needs to be kept on his toes. New signings and someone to Arsene off his comfort zone, only who can… Read more »
Agreed. Even the best managers (and I still rate Wenger as one of the best) need to have some kind of pressure to perform and advance from those above them. You don’t want all-out spats between board and manager, but neither do you want the present situation where everybody’s going through the motions and ther’s no tension in the relationship at all. The result is that as long as the money keeps coming in, the owner and executive team leaves as much to Wenger as they think they can get away with, and inertia sets in. Does Kroenke even remember… Read more »
Fuck.
Damn our socialist ways!
Wenger given money to buy players, > sells players.
Wenger minus funds > still sells his best players.
Wenger in his livingroom > thinking about selling players.
We only sell our top, top players. RVP has gone, so no danger of anyone going anytime soon.
“We have a good squad, a balanced one.”
He forgot to add “…if you want to finish mid-table” or “Walcott is winger who is now magically a top striker, Ramsey is a central midfielder who is now a natural winger, so everything is balanced right in my unbalanced mind”
They don’t “magically” become those, they develop into them. That’s what happens with football players
Are you seriously trying to say you think Aaron Ramsey has ‘developed’ into a winger? It’s plain to see he doesnt have the pace, fitness, crossing ability or defensive capabilities to play there. Wenger has a team of players that many of them seem to be playing out of position. Arteta is not a defensive midfielder. Naturally he’s an Attacking Midfielder, which is where he flourished for Everton. Wenger was lucky enough that he’s accepted his new role even if it is massively at Arteta’s detriment. This article rings a bell http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/9744518/Spurss-Jan-Vertonghen-rejected-chance-to-join-Arsenal-because-Arsene-Wenger-wanted-to-play-him-in-midfield.html It sums it up. If Wenger wanted to… Read more »
Even if Evian offered minimum wage that’s better than nothing and arsenal should loan him out making up the rest of his wage. We’re not a fucking charity but we’re handing out wages to people to provide some company at training and make the squad look a decent size come photo time. It’s a bad debt, write it off and move on. nothing personal against these guys but its time to get real here.

Maybe we can do a swap deal with them–Squillaci for many, many bottles of real tasty water.
Arsene has fallen into the old trap of believing his own bullshit
In fairness to Arsene, he can’t really come out and say, “You know, our squad is a bit shit, and we desperately need to bring in 4-5 competent football players.”
No, really him and the board should come out and say that in respect to all the fans whose hard earned money they’ve stolen in the last 7 years, because clearly the lack of investment in the making a the best squad of players they could build is beyond a joke now.
Why can’t he? Other managers would come out and say it. Wenger is all about protecting his players but a bit of solid criticism might do them some good. He’s too much a father-figure to a lot of them and that’s great with the youngsters but many of them are blooded internationals. Or, like Theo, not really that young (he’s been a first-teamer for a while and with his contract saga, doesn’t seem too innocent to me).
I’m a big Wenger fan but he has to shake up his policy. He seems jaded and tired by it all now.
Dude, no-one’s asking him to say that. Just please – 1) Buy. Mouth shut and buy. Best panacea is action. 2) If you don’t want to, understand that people have every right too be pissed off with that stance, and stop repeating an untruth – i.e. that the squad is balanced.
This guy is already planning his retirement with comments like ‘..im looking at opportunities in the french riviera’ and arsenal has done well to fund that at £3mil p.a. for the past two and a half years.
Must be nice as a footballer on big wages with no chance of ever getting fired for non-perfomance.
i just cant believe we havent tried to buy another striker and winger i really dont know whats wrong with arsene wenger he used to be so smart when it came to transfers
Too busy counting his £7million a year I imagine….
‘we have a good squad, a Balanced one’ absolute stupidity Le proff. Just calculate the money squid gets while sitting on the bench for 6mnths 24 multiply by £50k = £1.2m wasted.
We won’t buy anyone
If this is a good and balanced squad , we wouldn’t be scrambling around 6th place with 4 pts up to 4th and being knockd out by L2 teams. This team need to be strenghten and I can’t understand why a smart man as Arsene fail to see this, he has the money so thats not the problem.
To be totally honest, when I looked at our squad before the season began, I thought the squad, player for player, was as good as any in the league. With Abou “like a new signing” Diaby and Wilshere coming back I definately felt our squad had improved from the players we had available last season (those players along with Pod, Santi and Giroud were more than enough compensation for the loss of THEM 2, in my opinion). Ofcourse they have disappointed, but I think that is down to massive underperformance, that’s why we are all feeling deflated, frustrated, constipated etc,… Read more »
he’d be their water carrier.. *runs to get his coat*
maybe we could trade him for a bottle and make some much needed defensive improvements
I think Evian would be quite refreshing for the Squid.
He could bottle it for them!
A man as smart as Wenger would spend 20million on a top-notch talent just to please the fans. The only reason he’s looking for bargains is AFC. At 65 years of age any man would like being respected by 60k supporters, rather than getting booed off the pitch every second week.
In Arsene I will always trust.
i would prefer Wenger to be respected by the 60k supporters, but I would also prefer my team not to be shit.
The only thing Wenger’s got “balanced” is Arsenal’s check book…down to the penny. Stingy ass.
I must confess to a mild form of self-diagnosed schizophrenia with Arsenal these days. I lurch between head in hands ‘am I the only one?’ disbelief to reluctant acceptance of a moderately successful but comparatively (relative to our previous achievements) disappointing existence. I really have nothing more profound to offer and perhaps that’s the worst thing of all.
Still a couple of weeks to go yet. You never know!
Is this guy still member of squad?? Damn!! We should terminate a contract like his.
