Wenger backs returning Podolski

Arsene Wenger has dismissed speculative reports about the future of Lukas Podolski, lauding the German’s impact from the bench as he sealed the three points for the Gunners yesterday.

As the former Cologne man spoke openly about how happy he was at the club, certain tabloids suggested he could be jettisoned this summer.

But when asked about him at his post-game press conference, Wenger was effusive, saying, “Look how he played when he came on!

“As soon as you have a player who doesn’t play for three games, the papers get a story like that. But he looks very happy to be here.”

The reality is that he’s been carrying a niggling injury and his absence from the team coincided with a period when results were good and performances from other players meant they deserved to continue in the team.

He’s now scored 14 goals in his first season at the club, which is a very decent return, so while perhaps his impact hasn’t been as great as we’d hoped, it’s hardly as if he’s been an abject failure.

More media led drama than anything else, and with 6 games left to play this season, there’s time for him to add to that tally too.

I don’t believe the transfer speculation regarding Podolski for one moment; idle gossip put forward by a lazy, unimaginative tabloid media in my humble opinion. He’s had a good season (I personally think he’s quietly becoming a vital component of the team) and letting him go after one year would make no sense at all. On his day he can be a monster and he’s damn near irreplaceable. I mean, where the hell are we going to find another striker with his own theme song?

I have to say I really do love Poldi, his perpetual smile is awesome

William Hancox

More importantly when are we going to start singing his theme song?

Mikel Artekkers

I sing it at home on a regular basis.

perihelion

Lots of players are just weak
But you are in control of the ball and keep it on the floor
Lots are lazy millionaires
But with you it goes about the honour
After the game en before the game
And if things don’t go as planned
you will keep on giving it all
Because for you football is your live!

(8x) Lu Lu Lu Lukas Podolski

Big Chief from Antarctica

Sounds so much better in German. The refrain alone would cover it though!

perihelion

I think it sound fantastic, but then I’m foreign so you might be right 😉

Here’s the second part:

The most important thing is on the field
All the rest is fake
you are young and wild
Lots of keepers have you killed
the fans sing Lukas-we love you
you’ve got a real golden boot
come on and put it in
and then the whole club will sing:

(8x) Lu Lu Lu Lukas Podolski

Make no mistake : poldi is the best striker in the team

Don’t you know that Podolski is a football-God?

He said *a* football God, not *the* football God.

I don’t think anyones gona debate that, the only problem is getting him to perform for 90 mins, he must have a record for most amount of subs in a season.

GoonerPoor

I think Poldi is an integral part of the team and his ‘dont mess with me’ attitude is much needed in this developing arsenal squad. 100+ german caps and so much experience. Poldi is kinda signing we should look to do more often.

Hiotu

People doubt him since he has games where he contributes little.
But you don’t get 100+ caps with the German national team for nothing.
That finish today was top class, and as you mentioned spoke volumes about his experience.

What I’d give to play on wings with him. Buy me back Wenger. Citeh no good.

Nacho Monreal

Gareth Bale

No thanks Clichy. We got teh Gibbo!

Adam, Watford

I can’t wait to see more of him next season, starting and fully fit. I think he has been an excellent aquisition this year.
Poldi at full potential, we don’t even miss whathisface ( ? ) who slunk off oop north.

Arsene Wenger

Yes, I believe we can do it, I believe we are up for the fight.

Arsene Wenger

Maybe he could be useful as a second striker given the fact that he is good at long shots and clinical in front of goal, allowing him to benefit from Giroud nof-ons. The only problem is he might not be creative enough to play in that position.

If Podolski is so great then why has he been subbed so many times this season? And why didn’t he start yesterday? It was an average performance yesterday, but we showed plenty of grit and determination to finally get the three points. After another terribly conceded goal Wenger made two good substitutions which turned things around. There is a creeping inevitability that we will finish at least fourth now: if we beat Everton on Tuesday then we are almost there. Man United will be the only tough game left. Chelsea and/or Spurs will bottle it. PS: Isn’t Gervinho the most… Read more »

Arsene Wenger

He didn’t start yesterday because Norwich was a team we were meant to destroy without his services. Let’s be honest: if one of those chances had gone in in the first half, you wouldn’t even be asking this question. You may say that those chances would have gone in if he had played from the start but his first few poor touches suggest otherwise. Regarding the easy fixtures: I would have thought that yesterday would change your mind. That was meant to be our easiest fixture for a while but we made a real meal (which Grant Holt ate) of… Read more »

Gareth Bale

I agree with what you said about Gervinho. I think he’s a great player who has good balance, quick reactions, pace, and fantastic dribbling skills, but just needs to have a bit more composure in the final third. I think that aspect of his game will come with time though. I’ve seen many great players in the past who had great technical ability when they were young but it takes time and experience to understand the nuances of attacking in the final third. He has what it takes technically/physically, all he needs to do is keep a clear and cool… Read more »

mike

don’t you read? hes been carrying an injury, why the fuck play him any more than we need to when the risk is losing him later when we really need him? or permanently ruining his career ala Diaby when he was fouled

Pehnchod

Julio Baptista was more frustrating, You also have Chamakh and a long shot could be Andrey Arsharvin- as his clear talent and lack of effectiveness is a potent mix. Then you too have Almunia, Senderos, Squillaci not to mention Sylvestre. Armand Traore’s last game should make him a candidate. Adebayor had plenty moments of frustration inducing games also. Hleb is worth a mention but was not as frustrating as the aformetioned players. Gervinho – he has his moments but ive got time for him, after all Theo has been consistently more frustating then Gervinho has been and now he is… Read more »

Most of those players you’ve mentioned were just rubbish. With Gervinho you get the feeling that there is a great player trying to get out. He gets into great positions then his final ball or shot is bad. He’s so annoying.

Finsbury Park Gooner

I fucking love Poldi. That German determination, his big troll-face grin, that scintillating left foot.. And you just can’t argue with his stats. Hope he gets more time in the starting 11 next season.

jack jack jack

Agreed my Finsbury Park comrade. He’s just a really damn fine footballer, could have played with the Invincibles. Quick on the break, great technique, intelligent and a sweet left boot to boot.

Lec

What a stunning left foot this man has. He could make a curving out of those emirates goal post. I love the player.

pauly bear

I would love to see him and theo swap wings so they can cut in and shoot with there good foot. Gibbs nacho sagna jenk can look after the crosses

jack jack jack

To be fair, poldi has a fuckin mean cross on him.

A N Other

Walcott was trying his best not to pass the ball to poldoski for 3rd goal. He only did that because he knew there is no other way.. Walcott is way too selfish and I don’t believe that makes him a good striker.

Podolski, on the other hand, is much more mature and makes decision based on the situation and had only taken less than one season to learn what Walcott couldn’t in 6 seasons.

Pehnchod

Podolski is a top player. I think he is quality and his class has not been as on show as Cazorlas but there is a menacing quality about him. His technique is one of the best in the league and he could have had two or maybe three goals. Brilliant character to have in the team, a good first season return, if you look at his numbers he is one of the top players in the league in terms of goals and assists. So with that and it being his first season it all bodes well for us. All of… Read more »

Rufusstan

agreed throughout.

Our spread of players benefits us in so many ways right now, in addition to all the stuff above it makes things harder for our opponents. Once people got used to our setup, they targeted Santi to mark him out of the game and disrupt our play. If they do, Jack, Poldi, Aaron, Walcott get more room and can all cause just as much havok.

We got 99 problems but the pitch aint one

We are heading in the right direction as earlier on in the year we would have lost or at least drawn that game. I think Poldi has been carrying a more serious injury than has been let on hence his frequent substitutions and patchy form. Hope he can get fully fit for next season and no way would I want to see him leave. As for Mr Gervinho, yes of course he can be frustrating but he goes at people and is exciting and I think he gets far too much stick. Poldolski can be just as frustrating at times and… Read more »

Wenger didn’t play nacho to protect him from holt.

'desi'gner gooner

Wenger was afraid Holt would eat him up….Holt loves his Nachos after all!!!

Johnnycakes

Just got sick!

Poldi was excellent yesterday. Long may it continue. If he has indeed been carrying a nagging injury, it didn’t show yesterday. We need him to contribute a few goals in the run-in. Podolski is a great player on his day. He’s just been caught up in a stop-start kind of season.

2002

On another note, man u could win the title at the emirates….. We need to beat them and beat them good, this can not happen

mark.sd

This team is bad ass. You have great characters like Poldi, Koscielny, and Cazorla who are so happy-go-lucky but will fight when they need to. You have the leaders who bring calmness on the pitch like Mert, Mikel, and Sagna. You have Rosicky and Jackie in the middle who will turn on a dime and drive the play forward. There are also the players who make great contributions with their huge hearts and determination like the Ox, Jenks, and Gibbs. And don’t forget about the battering ram Giroud who will kick you in the face while going for headers(check out… Read more »

Poldi Goal….Pure Class. Sublime. It was a training ground exercise for the lad! The Pic of him on the bench on Arseblog….HILARIOUS.

Erwandy

Oh that left footed cannon. Rightly belongs in the armory. Cant wait the day that murderous 40 yards/100mph volley spew the guts of some traitorous dutch cunt or some farmer-obese-striker or one shawogre beast…that would feel like a hattrick to me

Mate Kiddleton

The longer I look at that picture, the funnier it gets…

I really struggle to understand why poldi’s had so little game time. I’d always pick him over gerv – his crossing and shooting are better, and he’s just generally a more consistent, professional player. I think he’ll play more next season, and will be a real asset. COYG
