Wilshere to have ‘minor surgery’ on ankle

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere is to have what is described as ‘minor surgery’ on his right ankle.

The midfielder made his comeback this season after a protracted period out of the game which saw him undergo operations on that same ankle and, subsequently, his knee to correct a further problem.

Arsenal have made it clear that it’s a problem with his left ankle which is currently keeping him out of the side, although he has been fully involved in training, and Wenger said he was confident this small procedure would not lead to any lengthy lay-off.

“Jack will have small, mild surgery,” said the manager. “It is a very small, small, small one. It is to remove a small pin. It will not be a problem.

“He will need very minor surgery, but we manage that as far as we can until the end of the season. At the moment, we use him only in games when I feel he is really needed.

“He won’t be available for England in the forthcoming friendlies, but he will be back for pre-season.”

That news pretty much rules him out of starting either of our final two games, and if his participation is any way risky to his longer-term health then, given the options we have to cope with his absence, it might be best to leave him out altogether.

Tomas Rosicky should continue in Wilshere’s place from the start tonight while Santi Cazorla is also comfortable at the top of the midfield, Francis Coquelin could come in allowing Aaron Ramsey to move forward, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho capable of playing in the front three.

Let’s hope the surgery is as minor as we’re told and that we don’t need to use Jack against Wigan tonight, or Newcastle on the final day, because of good team performances.

Loop A Hole

He uses the word ‘small’ more..

Harsh

top, top, top quality player…….
very small, small, small surgery…..
he goes to great length to ensure media doesn’t modify his words during reporting……

Gunnerman

Damn!

Ebouefan

Just a normal procedure which is no big deal. However, the damage has already been done and we have yet to see if and how he comes out of it.

Lec

OWEN is this gonna stop!

AB

déjà vu

AB

Hope not*

Mooro

I’m sure you’ve posted that before…

It Is What It Is

JW has a foreign body in his ankle. Anybody that knew this would have known it had to come out at some point.
If Wenger had been hiding anything, it’s that.

Pin comes out, Jack gets stitches, misses stoooooopid friendlies, has a full pre-season et voila. Nothing to worry about….

Joe

Yeah, and Diaby will be back in ‘2-3 weeks’. It’s never that simple.

Santi Claws

A foreign body in his ankle? Who is it, Roberto Mancini? I suppose he’s hiding Rafa Benitez in his elbow too, those poor bastards need to get away from it all somehow

Kenyangoon

All the best to him and quick recovery!!

Weng(unn)er

The availability of Rosicky makes the squad look so deep! Thank goodness for his presence! Hope he has a full season next year along with Wilshere being fully fit and Cesc coming home! What a mouth-watering midfield that would be! Giroud will be fed goals after goals!

RealHarry

Well, I agree and hope for the same, except for Cesc coming back. It won’t happen, barring a spectacular fallout with the Barca hierarchy.

It Is What It Is

Taking all the facts into cosideration, circa 30 gls + 30 assists in two seasons, Fab won’t be comin home.

It is more likely that Song would be sold if Barca need to free up a squad place – he had more assists last season than actual league appearances this. Thankfully, we don’t require that type of CB. XD

Weng(unn)er

From what I’ve been reading all over the internet – Cesc doesn’t fit into the system of Vilanova. Assuming Vilanova will be at Barca for another 2 seasons, and after the Bayern humiliation – I’m expecting a huge revamp in their first team itself. They need a really good center back pairing and quality wingers. Apparently, to fund Neymar’s purchase they might sell some of the expensive bench players. Let’s just hope that if Cesc is up for sale, we don’t hesitate in buying him considering we have first right to buy him back. It would really bolster fan morale… Read more »

Better that Cesc comes back here that the other rumour doing the rounds of the rags yesterday…. Cesc to Man Utd. That joke is in such poor taste….

Wa

Hope its as small small small as mr wenger says it is!

Bunburyist

We’re pretty well stocked in midfield, so if we can’t secure a top four finish without Wilshere, then there’s something seriously wrong with us.

why is my name required

First Podolski, now Jack. Im angry, i don’t know why but i feel he’s hiding something. The fact that he’s not being honest frustrates me. I want to believe what he says but its frustrating. But nevermind that.. A win tonight would clear my mind

Harish

He’s got something against lefties, just look at TV5… It’s as clear as day!!

But frankly, if he’s got something to hide – we won’t find out anytime soon so you shouldn’t let it frustrate you. It’s out of your hands. Only journalists are in a decent enough situation to ask these sort of questions, but they care more about his feelings on Fergie, and what he thinks Fergie thinks of Mancini’s sacking, amd what he thinks of Fergie’s favourite colour, and how much PSG are offering him even though he’s not been in contact etc.

idocare

err……

shuggietodd

I can’t shake off this horrible feeling about tonight. Hopefully the wife burns my dinner and it’s nothing to do with football….

shuggietodd'swife

Cook your our bleedin’ dinner.

mike

teach your wife to spell own lol

Bee

(it’s not really his wife)

shuggietodd

I always cook anyway. If you’d tasted my wife’s cooking you’d know why!

i want to boff giroud and im not even gay

I wonder if this small small small problem will keep out as long long long as the last small small small problem he had? I don’t trust Wenger, I think he little bit lies sometimes LOL

bazza

Because of jacks style of play he gets targeted all the time refs dont seem to give him enuf protection. Just hope these injuries are niggles. AW probably wont play JW at all making his operations at the end of the season and then no england involvement giving him max time off to recover

twisted cuntloks

I thought Wenger said that it was a small problem and nothing to worry about ?

surgery is surgery however minor and there is no guarantee the problem is cured which is a damn shame as he is our main man.

unfortunately this is one of the problems with project youth, too much strain nowadays on a young body.

Gibbs, theo, Jack and Fabregas(hamstrings) have all been plagued with injury due to this, I’m sure there are plenty of others…

mike

well with 30-32 being considered old ish in our sport what we have to consider is if they don’t start young, just how long a career can they expect? Gibbs and theo in particular given a large part of their game is pace

twisted cuntloks

what I was referring to was too much first team action too young ie Arsene’s project youth. You can learn your trade (even up to late teens)by going out on loan to lower divisions where the strain on your body and the quality of athlete is considerably lower. then gradually integrate into the first team. Gibbs is a prime example, he would play 1 game here or there and get injured in the first team because his body couldn’t cope despite his tremendous talent, Jack is having more problems too now. If you look after yourself and are a decent… Read more »

Jiggalo

Except in lower leagues, the pitches aren’t as good quality.

The amount of small niggles and twangs i’ve had due to bobbley pitches, standing on a lump and twisting something….

Your point about the intensity is valid, but at the same time other young players play often and don’t pick up serious injuries.

chav

Better safe than sorry! No need to risk him aggravating his injury especially from the past experience and the decent form of Ramsey, Rosicky, Arteta and Cazorla.

Jim Jimminy

Today is going to be a long day

davonewzealand

Jacks minor sugery sounds ok so let ‘s hope he can come back fully fit next season. Arsenal needs Jack as we are now relying on no more than 12 players. Theo,Giroud, Santi, Arteta, Poldi, Jack Sags, Merts, Kos, Gibbs/Nacho have carried this team for a long time. To me they are the real core of this team. The rest have basically struggled with form or injuries .

GoonMan

I am so nervous I can’t concentrate on anything else already. We don’t seem to have won by comfortable margins very many times this season, I would really appreciate the boys pulling out a 3 goal cushion tonight. There’s no harm in asking is there.

shuggietodd

I think there’ll be a a first half Walcott goal and then sweaty arse time after that. I really don’t feel too good about it. As you say, a three goal cushion would help.

I’m praying for no injuries too.

With tense games like this (which I’ll be watching at home), I never know whether to drink or not. If I get too drunk then it seems like the players can’t concentrate! Maybe a few glasses of red.

UGooner

i know what you mean… I just smoke some good good but it really puts me on the edge if its a tight game.

pauly bear

I actually had the same op got pins and wires out of my ankle. I went in on a friday and was back in work walking fine by the wednesday. And im no were near a tuff as jack. Im sure he’ll be grand come pre season tour

Iceman

Hopefully it is going to remain a minor surgery instead of blowing up to be a major set back for next season. And speaking of set backs, we really cant afford any tonight. I dont think I ve been this nervous about any of our home matches this season. Add to the fact that Wigan did win at The Emirates last year and and have just won the FA Cup final. Go out with all guns blazing boys. Because we need this! Cmon you Gunners!

Lec

Having major operations at a young age usually interferes with the players career throughout most of his senior career. Seen it too many times. Hopefully wilsheres case is different. This is the one player you just want to see have a succesful career, he’s too exciting, great potential.
