Arsenal’s stand-in captain Per Mertesacker says he’s ready to take on the responsibility ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa.
With both Mikel Arteta and Thomas Vermaelen injured, the German international will lead the team tomorrow and after becoming a crucial part of the team since his arrival two summers ago, he’s happy to do the job.
“It is very unusual that the captain and vice captain are out for the first game of the season but for me it is a big honour and a big surprise,” he said to the official site.
“I am not used to it but during pre-season I captained the team for a few games so it is nothing new. It is very special for me to be captain for the first Premier League game.
“My English is improving so I can contribute a bit more. Communication is important and hopefully my contribution will increase further.”
Meanwhile, as injuries mount and hit an already depleted squad, goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has played up the qualities of some of the youngsters we may have to rely on.
“I was happy to see the young players who travelled to Asia do well,” he said. “Gedion, Serge and Chuba were all outstanding and hopefully they will be very important for the Club in the future.
“I wouldn’t say they surprised me because they have trained with us for a while and we know their qualities. It is good for them to show the fans that there are young players coming through.”
Although Arsenal’s first XI for tomorrow looks strong, we will have to use some of those young players for the bench, so let’s hope the pre-season involvement has done them good.
Impossible not to back the mertebacker for captain. he shouts at szczesney alot, I like that
Hi guys and girls. So anyway I’ve been hibernating for the last few months, luckily i’ve woken up just in time for the new season! Can’t wait to catch up on all the news regarding new signings etc. Oh the excitement! So anyway folks who did we get!? Anyone good? Cant wait to find out ! ! Going to check the Arsenal website now. …
As much as we’re all pissed about that can we try keep those comments in the related articles (not that i didn’t give ya the thumbs up for originality), i’d prefer to just see stuff saying congratulations to the fucking man mountain that is Mert and wish Benteke all the best in his Pocket tomorrow. Chuffed to bits he’s leading us out.
Argh, it is high time people gave comments relevant to the blog post. We should be hyping the team for a win tomorrow. The lack of signings is common knowledge now and complaining about it is boring and monotonous. Blogs, please create a live blog where people who wish to curse and swear about the lack of signings can meet and moan.
“you can’t win anything with kids”
Neither can you with Bees
Apart from a ‘Who has the most awesome bee?’ contest.
C’mon Per the Mert!
he should stay captain even once vermaelen and arteta have returned – it’s laughable to be a club whose captain isn’t in the top two choices for his position
If anyone should be captain, it’s Berzekersacker.
Berzerkersacker. Excellent.
Weve got a big fucking german!!
And to think some people were rubbishing the man after his first season. Well done per, lead us to three points and continue the long standing run of captains wearing that famous #4.
I remember watching a Champions League match when he was still at Leverkusen and he had that s&m face mask on because of a broken nose or something. Thought his name was “Meatsacker” and giggled to myself.
Yeah. That has nothing to do with anything, but I thought I’d share.
hey bro… whatever you saw… he was never playing for Leverkusen. Sorry to give ya these news. 😉
Damn you penis, he never played for Leverkusen. it was Werder Bremen. Anyway, in the world of a penis any player plays for any team
Merts has been nothing but solid for The Arsenal proud to have BFG in the squad.
I would have to say the situation in terms of captaincy however is much like the Fabregas days *tear falls*. If Wilshere can stay reasonably fit over the next year or two well it is a matter of time.
Did we sign anyone while I was typing this? Because after all we are “active” so it could be any second now right?
Well there is only one way to find out. *fingers crossed*

Meh….why fucking bother. Gosh damn it Wenger.

Why are Liverpool fans angry, Suarez just wants to be part of their past…I thought they loved history?
Ok. I’ll admit it, I have been drinking tonight, but if this is not the actions of a Leader Of Arsenal, I don’t know what is:

I once watched a documentary about a guy who pretended that he’d won the lottery as he was trying to impress some woman. She was thrilled , but as the weeks went by she wondered why he was still driving around in a clapped out Ford Cortina. When she’d ask him why he wasnt spending any money he’d make some excuse about wanting to keep a low profile so as no one would know he was a multi millionaire. Weeks went by and his excuses got more and more ridiculous until in the end he had to admit to her… Read more »
And where does Mertesacker fit in all this? Or is this the Danger Mouse one man wank show.
it sounds more like ramblin pete
Huge respect for Mertesacker by the way. Happy for the fella.
He’s got the ability and experience to back up the decision to give him the armband. Annoying that we have accumulated so many injuries already (be it short term, niggling or long term), but it’s good that we have a strong side. Need some depth, though! I don’t want to say what could happen this weekend
Can’t wait for the game tomorrow. Am supporting the team to win. After the game: sign some fu*king players, Arsene.
Geddin BFG!
Just don’t let Benteke fist fuck you with a hattrick, and bring home the bacon
Im glad for per and he’s a top bloke but honestly are we seriously saying we couldn’t do better? A great squad player but time and again he’s caught out of position and his turning circle is laughable. If we want arsenal to be up there then he isn’t up to it against the better teams. You target your opponents weaknesses and he has too many
Got to disagree with you Greg. Reads the game to perfection. First choice centre half for Germany. I think we’d agree they know a thing or two about football, those Germans.
1st choice??. wont that be hummels??
Per is top notch! Got a Mercedes engine in him 🙂
Woah John. Calm down fella. No this is not the ‘Danger Mouse one man wank show ‘ I tried that years ago on Broadway. It never really took off.
Always amazed at how much stick germans get in this country just because they are german.
The guy is nearing 100 caps for his country and he is in his mid twenties…how fucking bad can he be? People who hate or slag per off just do so because its the done thing in this country…just hate the germans.
In my opinion he will go on to be germanys most capped player, and well deserved too. Congrats BFG.
Remember the Tony adams years lads, just a few more signings plz

Nothing to do with the fact he’s German you idiot. He’s just not that good against the top teams
Greg is absolutely spot on. Per is a great back-up centre back, but should not be first choice. Most opposition chances come through Per errors. His tactical awareness is good, but does not make up for his lack of pace. Should be fine today, but not against stronger opposition. Surprising how many Arsenal fans choose to forgive his weaknesses. Don’t be confused, Arsenal’s strong defensive finish to the season was down to Kos and the work of Arteta and Ramsey in front.
Just hope the kit man has reinforced the BFC’s shorts, that Benteke is a big lump for his pocket!
Congrats Mert, Per-fect choice
