Luiz Gustavo has today admitted he’d be interested in a move to Arsenal.
The Bayern Munich midfielder spoke at a press conference ahead of Brazil’s game against Switzerland in midweek, and said he had a decision to make about his future which he described as ‘delicate’.
Expressing his desire for regular football, he said, “My contract with Bayern runs until 2015 but it is very important that I play first-team football to keep getting called up for Brazil.
“I am in a very delicate situation at Bayern and this needs sorting out. I have personal and professional reasons to move. I have heard about the Arsenal interest. It’s a big club we’re talking about here so of course I’d like to play for them.
“Arsenal play a very attractive brand of football and are in the Champions League. They also have a very clever manager in Arsène Wenger.
“Even when Bayern beat them in the last Champions League you could see they are not pushovers.”
Of course while his desire to play for Arsenal is nice, Arsenal also have to want him to play for them, and it remains to be seen how real the club’s interest is.
There has been talk of an official bid, with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge saying, “Luiz has offers from England, Spain, Russia and Germany. The player has not made a decision, yet”, but nothing concrete.
Gustavo’s versatility would offer Arsene Wenger a solution in midfield, and also at the back if required, so he ticks many of the right boxes, but given the way this summer has gone so far, we’re not getting our hopes up yet.

the only reason we decided we needed him in mid august / Gustavo deciding he needed to move to play regular football – was because a certain Thiago Alacantra moved to Bayern. and if i remember correctly that was pretty late in the transfer window (late July ?)

No need to be pessimistic. I actually believe this would happen. Unlike in Higuain’s case where personal terms with his cat was the problem we actually seem to have some agreement with the club on this one.
