Wilshere believes this squad can win things

Jack Wilshere says it’s time to put Arsenal’s barren years behind them and bring silverware to the Emirates Stadium for the first time.

Not only that, the England midfielder believes this squad has the capability of doing that, despite having fallen by the wayside badly last year.

In an exclusive interview with Talksport, Wilshere said, “Even this year, I’ve been reading things like: ‘Arsenal aren’t title contenders.’ But we’ve had that for years.

“We feel we have a great squad, as we showed towards the end of last season, when we went 11 games unbeaten, so if we can reproduce that form, then we have a chance. When we had to get the results, we went out there and got them. And that’s what we need to take into this season.

“Arsenal used to be a team that won everything, you know – trophies and titles. But now we haven’t won anything for eight years, so we know what we have to do.

“It’s time to start producing trophies and being closer to the top of the league at the end of the season. We don’t just want to be fighting for fourth place – we want to be up there with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.

“We feel we’re good enough to be there.”

While there is obviously intense frustration at the state of the squad and the lack of summer transfer market activity, the fact is that this is a group of good, honest guys who will give 100% for the club. Whether that’s enough remains to be seen, but we ought to be applauding the attitude because it can’t be easy for them at the moment either.

Wilshere also touched on the two cup exits last season and called on his teammates to grow up and ensure exits like that aren’t repeated.

“Last season, we lost games in cup competitions in which we could have been there at the end. We lost against Bradford away and Blackburn at home. We should never be losing games like that. But this year we have to get over that, grow up a bit and realise that we need a trophy – Arsenal’s too good not to be winning trophies.

“We’ll be in four competitions this year. We know we have to win one of them.”

Let’s hope so.

Aye, the players can do it, even if the manager can’t.

Good luck, Jack. May your season be injury free.

What are they smoking over there…

ckmma

I know Jack has heart and believes we can do better, but im not deluded, this squad got 4th last year, just. How can you think keeping it the same will do better, its madness doing the same things over and expecting different results. If we spent 40mil on a decent striker cb and def mid and we still didn’t win anything at least I and probably most fans could be content that we tried our best, but the others were too much as always, and I could take that, City spent 100 mil and chelsea and Manu have been… Read more »

On paper we may appear to be a weaker team this season. But football is played on grass and it is impossible to predict an outcome. You said that we got 4th last year, just.. You’re right cos if the Chelsea result had been a draw rather than a win on the last day then we would have finished 3rd… And in football you CAN do the same thing over and get different results… – a ball can be crossed into the box from the same spot a dozen times and each time a different outcome can occur. -Somebody can… Read more »

I think the point is that without any signings the squad is way too light to compete with those around us. Injuries are inevitable throughout the season and it would only take a couple of players in certain positions to be injured at the same time to really weaken our team. If that does happen there’s not enough quality in the back up we have, hence the need for some new players. I think our best 11 is right up there and could compete but it’s unrealistic to think that we will be able to put the same team out… Read more »

Ah! So that’s what we’ve been smoking.

Capital One Cup. Think we’ve got enough to win that, except Jose tends to take it seriously. Without signings I don’t think we can win anything else

Redondante

We COULD win anything and everything. Bradford got to the Capital One Cup final, Wigan won the F.A. Cup – winning cups is not always an indication of quality. What we really want is a great team that is LIKELY to win something and guaranteed at least to challenge for the league. If we were to get to the final of the two cups, to the semi-finals of the Champions League and finish in the top 2, that would be far more significant than winning a cup. But most Arsenal fans would prefer a flukey Capital One Cup win because… Read more »

I think consistently being nearly men (2nd, semis of CHampions League) becomes a problem in itself though. Do you think they REALLY believe they can win something, or its just talk until they actually do it? What these guys, after 8 years, and NOTHING in the new stadium, need to do is fucking get over the line for once and win something. I get what you’re trying to say about consistency, but thats Arsene style excuses. Still havent won fuck all. CLose though. If thats good enough for some then so be it. Glory is not in 2nd place, youre… Read more »

he’s not justifying our consistent scraping for 4th place mate. all he’s saying is that he would rather that the team got better via some quality signings and better play by the players who’re already here, and that the team actually challenge for the titles instead of the 4th place ‘trophy’. and that the team didn’t lose to lower league opposition in the cups. or experience dramatic, ridiculous 8 – 2 mawlings in order for the manager to realize that new signings are needed. instead of winning a meaningless carling cup which will not be a sign of top quality.… Read more »

some dumb american

With a little bit of luck, anything is possible I suppose.

Best of luck to the boys.

heroldgoon

Our squad is so weak, even “luck” will only get us a top 4 finish not the title….unless luck is a top notch striker I haven’t heard of

Midfield Corporal

We’ll need more than luck, more like a bloody miracle.

I think my dismay this summer was compounded whdn my 7 yr old opened up his Junior Gunner pack and pulled out a red wooly hat with one thick white stripe and one bloody black stripe?????? It looks like we half inched them from Man U’s club shop. We can’t even get a flaming hat right.

heroldgoon

Wenger keeps using Man Utd & Chelsea in same sentence as Arsenal, despite the 2 clubs winning 21 trophies between them in last 8 years. I dont know yet if he knows we are about to start a new season….WEAKER! than we were last season with far more injuries, and 3 less new signings is this the same man who said we need a strong start?

Arsene's stylist

Poor Jack. He deserves to realize his true potential in a great team surrounded by excellent players in an ambitious club.

Come on Arsene!

Ebouefan

He’ll realise that in a couple of seasons if the current state carries on.

Ryan Dakota

…and adjectives were the winner on the day

He’s also got some grass on his face.

why don’t we buy?

Bunburyist

People have been asking this all summer, and I’m getting tired of explaining it. We’re still waiting for Dick Law to return from Madrid, where he got lost trying to find Higuain’s father. Dick’s return will trigger a clause in Louise Swarz’s contract that forces Liverpool to let him know that Dick Law is ‘in da house’, which, as the clause stipulates, John Henry and Brent Rodgers have to say in unison with a rap voice. From Liverpool, Dick will fly to Wolfsburg to try to sign Edin Dzeko, and, realising he’s too late, will instead welcome Gustavo as their… Read more »

big black clock

I believe in this squad unlike some of you. But my god just sign somebody.

lettraggad

I liked your comment but mostly because of your name. I mean who doesn’t like a big black … oh clock.

And regarding Wilsheres comments , Bless him … and the innocence of children.

Bring in 3 strong names and I’m a believer we probably undoubtedly will but I wont beleive it until I see it. “Fool me once shame on you , Fool me twice ..”

The Dinx

Rubbish,we all know we need those signings!!!

big black clock

“wilshere deserves to be surrounded by excellent players”

Why? What has he accomplished in the game so far to merit that? I’m not denying his talent but idk what makes him “deserve” smth that other players don’t. Stop over glorifying him and just let him develop.

Jomo

Yes we can. Giroud and theo to each get 25 goals. Kos to be a boss in defence. Ramsey to have the best season of his career. And Jack to be the pivot to all these things. Top two in the league. Let’s go.

the only sam is nelson

this reminds me a bit of the summer of ’88 when we missed out on Tony Cottee and everyone went mental about lack of ambition and no signings etc, “spend the money George!”

and of course the 88/89 season was so memorable for exactly that lack of ambition or achievement. oh, wait

Finsbury Park Gooner

Also, in 88/89 do you remember an influx of oil money and the average transfer fee being eleventy billion pounds? No. Times have changed (a lot) since Tony Cottee was a marquee signing.

the only sam is nelson

jack walker was the first sugar daddy. another reason to hate blackburn.

Bunburyist

Ah, yes, 88/89. That was when you could catch AIDS from toilet seats. A magical era.

don

I expect to win the treble, capital one cup and maybe la liga if some voodoo shit happens

Modhabobo

The problem with all these players saying positive things is the way ‘IF’ hangs in the ether. If we get a good run together, if everyone stays fit, if we win the big matches.

If my grandmother had balls she’d be my grandfather!

The problem is all those things he describes won’t come together, and the flaws in the squad will be highlighted.

pauliegooner

Jack you shouldn’t be smoking dope with the season starting on Saturday.

deji

Anybody else think maybe he has heard something about no signings?….I mean, the same player who felt we needed a couple of additions to compete a few weeks ago now thinks due to our recent lenghtening injury list are good enough to compete now?….

I love you jack and I know you’ve got heart but, COME ON……

Arsecrew

Brainwashed

Ivan le Terrible

Sami Khedira please. Don’t let him go to France. If its wages, you said we can compete. Soooo, fucking do it. Thanks

Finsbury Park Gooner

Now THAT would be a great signing..

Lady Eowyn

Didn’t we win the fair play league last season?

Got to defend that title!

Marksman

Ballsy! But all balls and bollocks!

Diaby

Lets fuck Villa first!!

Bunburyist

What, all of us? Fuck the Villa squad?

TomJ

Come on, optimism is one thing but lets be realistic here. We have had 3 months to improve the squad. And while I agree we have in one way by getting rid of what was surplus, we should have made improvements by now

TomJ

This ended up in the wrong place!

gooner odst

just like that bloke Capoue

godooner

Yes jack we all belive in the squad but this squad ain’t big enough we need more players

heroldgoon

Arsene must have found a way to hypnotize the players into thinking this….it’s worse than I had imagined..

Glasgow Gunner

Copy and paste of Fabregas pre season 08/09 & 09/10 comments. we didn’t listen then so this would be a touch naive if he was around at that time. Hope he has a great season but not a Madrid hounding us all summer after it type season. Lets face it. We know our money men would duly crumble

Lennie67

Jock, I know you want indepenence but please use English until then..

muchadoaboutnot

Arsenal in resent times/memory have also been prone to injury. With this thin squad as is, it’s difficult to think this season will be different and Arsenal will finally win something other than the perennial and proverbial 4th trophy.

Festa

Jack’s a quality player and he’s got a sense of humour as well!!!

Lennie67

Presume you lot are teenagers !

Nickgooner84

Lets just be realistic, if we don’t buy anyone before the end of the window on the 2nd September the club are in shit street. People will stop going to games, therefore the club makes less money, protests will be stronger than ever, it would turn us into a total fucking circus. I therefore will get behind the players and try not to believe we will not buy a single player from now till the window closes. Even if we end up paying well over the odds, the club must surely realize what is at stake if they don’t get… Read more »

Why is everyone stating the obvious? yes the squad is thin yes we need more dept… wenger has cleared out alot of dross does this not show that he is making room for new blood? I for one am not panicing maybe at 11:30 on sept 2nd I will but for now people need to chill.

P.s van persie is a cunt

P.p.s so is moyes

Gunsen Gunner

You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Chrispy

This squad couldnt even win the Emirates cup you silly little boy

Fatgooner

“Wilshere believes this squad can win things.”

How?

There’s an old saying in the army: “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.”

And seeing as our preparation has been an absolute fucking joke, maybe Jack can explain just how we are going to “win things”.

We are massively understregth in terms of both quality and quantity. At the moment we are heading or disaster.

Olegaz

Wait till we drop points this Saturday ,

with the left and the right

seriously, it seems like everyone who is involved in the day-to-day of the club (and the day-to-days of football) thinks that we have a good enough squad to compete. The fans however, whose only real knowledge of the club comes from blogs and media reports, think we’re about to pull a Leeds. I wonder whose expertise i should trust….

Sajit

Brave face Jack.. but sorry no.

Adam

No fan has any doubt in our team to beat Villa on Saturday. We are proud and looking forward too it There’s no reason why we shouldn’t collect 3 points. Come on guys, pre-season showed what Arsenal can do, let’s carry some momentum into our first fixture.

I for one will stand up and applaud. And rejoice our victory after.

Cazorla, Whoahh
Cazorla, Whoahh

Trez

Lets get one thing straight…if spurs sign both eriksen and lamela…we’re doomed. They’d have a complete squad and will def be in the top 4. We’ve just lost out on Gustavo, so unless we’re signing 5 world class players out of thin air, its over. Oh and i forgot to say their after willan too..

Eiregun

Just hope we avoid Bradford

RSAgooner

Funny how a failed summer/season can ruin ones entire year…

RSAgooner

Funny how a failed summer/season can ruin ones entire year…

kadre

Same old story at the beginning of every season.

Toby C

I’ve worked it all out – Sagna is going to cover at centre-back, Vermaelen (when fit) will be tried as defensive midfield cover, Ramsey will cover at right-back, Cazorla/Ox/Wilshere/Rosicky are cover in central midfield, Cazorla and Ox will also cover left-wing (although we don’t really have wingers), Podolski will cover centre-forward, as will Walcott, Can’t think who will cover right of the front three. But that all seems fine doesn’t it? For 60 odd games?

As long as we only ever have one injury at a time we’ll be fine!

Funky Gooner

Yes, bless poor little innocent, naive Jack. He has been an Arsenal player throughout his youth and also an England starter at 21. Of course we all know more than this ignoranous…….

Lennie67

Why don’t you complete your sentence; this is gibberish!

Not much of a squad left to believe in!

Looks like Jack is as delusional as his manager. Don’t buy players = Don’t win trophies.
