Report: West Brom 1-1 Arsenal (Gunners win 4-3 on pens)

Arsenal: Fabianski, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Monreal, Hayden, Arteta, Eisfeld, Ryo, Bendtner, Grrrrrrrnabry

Subs: Viviano, Bellerin, Flamini, Olsson, Iwobi, Akpom, Park

Arsenal secured passage to the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a hard fought win on penalties over West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal took the lead through Thomas Eisfeld in the second half of normal time only for Saido Berahino to equalise with a header minutes later. In extra-time both sides had chances to win it, before the game went to a shootout. It looked like the Gunners were dead and buried when Serge Gnabry missed, but poor efforts by Amalfitano and Dawson gave Nacho Monreal the chance to score the decisive kick, which he duly smacked home.

As expected Arsene Wenger made nine changes from the side that beat Stoke at the weekend and while the defence was relatively experienced the midfield and attack – Arteta and Bendtner aside – were more raw than a plate steak tartar. Amazingly we still had seven full internationals on the pitch.

It was an untidy game from the off as two sides full of unfamiliar names wrestled to get to grips with both themselves and each other.

Arsenal looked solid enough at the back in the first 30 minutes, however, up front we looked toothless. Gnabry and Ryo offered Bendtner little service in and around the box and the West Brom keeper was largely a spectator. In fairness, one header tipped over the bar aside, so too was Fabianski.

Hayden, making his debut at late notice, looked decent on the ball in midfield but he also made a couple of rash challenges, the second of which on Mulumbu resulted in a booking which might easily have been a red. A rusty looking Nacho Monreal joined him in the ref’s book soon after.

Both sides did nearly break the deadlock before half-time. An innocuously floated corner by Gnabry bounced dangerously inside the six-yard box before being cleared while Steven Reid came close for the Baggies with a curling free-kick that brushed the top of the bar.

West Brom upped the tempo in the early stages of the second half but it wasn’t until the hour mark that Fabianski was called on to make a proper save. The Pole did well tipping over a Mulumbu pile-driver from outside the box.

Having soaked up pressure Arsenal’s mix-and-match XI took the lead out of nothing. Gnabry snatched the ball in midfield, promptly fed Bendtner whose beautifully weighted ball found Eisfeld charging into the box. The German took one touch and passed the ball home with his right foot. (1-0)

The goal served as something of a shot in the arm for the Gunners. We snapped into challenges quicker, passed the ball around at a higher tempo and pushed further up the pitch. Gnabry’s worked some nice space in the box only to have his shot blocked

Sod’s law, just as we were finding our stride we conceded. A corner wasn’t cleared properly and when Shane Long returned the ball into the six-yard box it was England under-21 international Saido Berahino who reacted first to head home. (1-1)

On 81 minutes Eisfeld was withdrawn in favour of Chuba Akpom, before Hayden was replaced moments later by Kris Olsson. In injury-time Gnabry had a chance to steal the win but he couldn’t connect with a fine cross by Jenkinson.

Extra-time saw Arteta forced off with cramp in his left foot, perhaps unsurprising given his lack of game time, and Hector Bellerin slotted into midfield despite being a right-back.

Fatigue also seemed to catch up with Nicklas Bendtner, who having been put through on goal by a fine ball from Gnabry, dawdled so long he couldn’t get a shot off before being dispossessed.

The 25-year-old’s frustration got the better of him in the second period of extra-time when having been called offside he smacked the ball directly at a trio of ball boys. It was a welcome moment of light-relief.

As the game grew increasingly stretched, Bellerin had a couple of efforts, before Amalfitano, Rosenberg and Sinclair all squandered opportunities to win it for the home side.

Rather predictably, the game went to penalties.

Steven Reid scored first for the hosts. Bendtner calmly levelled. Rosenberg went straight down the middle to make it 2-1. Gnabry missed with a tame effort. James Morrison found the top corner. Olsson stepped up and scored to reduce the deficit. Craig Dawson slashed waywardly wide. Chuba Akpom scored to make it 3-3. Amalfitano missed and up stepped Nacho Monreal who promptly smacked the ball home to seal the victory.

Our reward? A home tie against Chelsea in the next round. Joy of joys.

Nachooo MANNNNNN COYG !!

S_i_r__B_a_l_l_s

Sunday league quality match – very poor football.

Basically our youth academy is shit.

Still, at least we are through to the next round, however if Wenger plays these bunch of misfits against Chelsea then we will get truly spanked.

ckmma

Whats wrong with our youth academy? I don’t see any other premier league team fielding 8 youngsters against prem league opposition and winning, do you?

S_i_r__B_a_l_l_s

The youth academy has ONLY produced two players in the last 20 years, Cole and Wilshere, you have made it at top level.

And looking at tonights game, no more wil be forthcoming anytime soon.

Fender797

We scraped a win against a West brom team that made 8 changes so they were nowhere near full strength. Shit maybe slightly harsh but in fairness people are always swayed by the result. We were lucky it even got to penalties as they missed 3 glorious chances at the end of extra time. Our second string did look second rate and maybe the truth hurts. Besides Akpom and maybe Bellerin the rest of the youngsters looked poor. Maybe they were nervous, maybe they just all managed to have a bad day on the same day. People are saying Bendtner… Read more »

German Gunner

please everyone stop answering this prick total wind up merchant

thw14

The League Cup used to be the youth academy’s opportunity to shine in a slightly more ‘first team’ environment and we got some pretty entertaining games that way. By those standards this was dire.

I don’t mind losing as a result of tactical naivete but what was genuinely disappointing was them not finding each other with passes half the time and playing so statically, refusing to go after giving.

Still, we won, so all’s well. And Bendtner looks like he could atleast do a job for 20 minutes at the end of a Premier League game.

ckmma

So your saying we have only produced 2 top players the rest are not worth investing in… ok so its not La Masia or Ajax, but having a good football education is still worth while, Gibbs and Szczesny aren’t too bad either, id say thats good going by most standards.

with the left and the right

West Brom had only two players under 23, we had 8 and three of them played the first competitive match of their careers, away from home. That is no easy feat. I don’t understand what conception of football some fans have. You think we should be beating a PL side that has a WC semifinalist in it by 4 or 5 goals? are there really people who walk around believing that if you don’t play for a top 4 side then you might as well be a Sunday league player?

Rufusstan

The really fun thing is how disheartening must it be for West Brom to lose like that tonight, and know that in 10 days we come back in the league, and potentially bring a side that is stronger in 10 out of 11 positions (the BFG being the obvious exception).

jäck jäck jäck

Oh do shut up Balls. A good win for our young motley crew, very impressed with how they did from the penalty spot. All 5 hit the target, while West Brom’s two meatheads Dorransed the ball towards the corner flag. They were obviously absolutely knackered by the end, it’s not surprising the football went downhill.

Saffagooner

Are you by any chance Piers Morgan?

TomJ

He certainly is not an Arsenal fan. And us answering him keeps him visiting us here. Best ignored

AP

No, Piers would be Sir No-Balls 😉

TomJ

it’s obvious we have some great young talent. And I for one am looking forward to seeing how they fare against Chelsea at the Grove, great experience and test for them

lordgunner

stop saying our academy, my team when you dont even support arsenal and you just trolling around

GreenGunner80

You really are like that solitary turd that just wont flush aren’t you balls.

Whether you were entertained by the match or not doesn’t really matter a win is a win is a win.

A few seasons back we would have been deploring the fact that Arsenal had just crashed out of the cup again etc.

To see the team doing well especially with so many changes is pleasing.

F*ck off back to the lane and go back to wanking over pictures of that chimp you lot just sold.

Bola

Sir Balls talks a lot of shit………….

Arsene nose

Credit to the young lads for getting a result, worked really hard though there is much room for improvement… Seeing jerkinson bursting a lung to get back after 120mins of football brought a tear to my eye.. COYG!!

goonerdal

As the match went on I wondered where our goals were gonna come from. creativity was very low I must say. Bendtner still looks a player! and he has better ball control than Giroud eh?

11 aways wins in a row?…slap me!

pikkmikk

Bring on Chelsea!

ckmma

As optimistic as I am, we don’t have a great record against Chelsea in cups…

Der Springer

This time without Drogba against us. He always had a knack of delivering killer blows against us. Even in this years Emirates Cup with Galatasaray.

Robbie Rotten

The cheating, diving bastard

masterofthegoonaverse

Wish we had signed him when we had the chance, history would be so different

Witoldo

Up next: Chelsea. And it’ll be another young lineup, coming directly before games against Liverpool and Dortmund.

Remember the invincibles because we aren't good anymore

Hope not.. If it is, we’ll then, I got to say good luck because a team like that is going to concede 10 to chelsea. The midfielders barring arteta were hopeless at protecting the back 4.

Hayden played much better than Arteta, I thought, reckless tackle aside. I rate Arteta highly, but he was dead on his feet after about half an hour – he got beaten in midfield so many times I almost thought it was Fellaini.

with the left and the right

Again i think youre wrong on this one. West Brom definitely had us on the backfoot for the majority of the match but in truth they didn’t trouble us that much. Jenkinson was superb, rarely letting Sinclair behind him, Monreal was a bit more vulnerable and as a result we saw a lot more crosses come from his side. But when they came in BFG and Verminator had little trouble clearing them. The heart of the defense was solid and we never really looked like being beaten through open play until extra time when understandably legs were tired. The only… Read more »

Arsenal

I think you’re taking the right line here, lots of positives to be taken etc. Sure that most of the negative commentators here were writing off Ramsey last season. These kids need time to build confidence and understanding of the game. Very drab compared to calling people shit… West Brom must be a bit shit…

Rufusstan

Not so sure how weak the team would be against Chelsea. The defense would be about the same, one of Arteta or the Flamster in front of them, and Bendtner up front. The other 4 slots could be very interesting. Rosicky should be back next week, and Theo, Podolski and Santi are all penciled in to return around the end of the Interlull. So if things work to plan, thats a lot of players all looking for minutes to get match-fitness. We could either start with close to a first 11 side, or have an impressive bench. (and still rest… Read more »

ewwwwww yes!

Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding.

Man of the match: Per Mertesacker – immense all night.

Vermaelen was also very good. 51/55 passes, 5/6 long balls, 7/7 effective clearances, 3 shots blocked and 4 interceptions. Jenkinson and Fabianski deserve credit, and Akpom was the best of the young’uns for the short time he was on.

Arteta, though, was well off the pace – I think it might take him a few weeks to return to his top level. Good thing we’ve got Flamini.

its gooner be ok

I agree however watching the highlights again on TV once Mert got beaten for that chance near the end, he just gave up. I think if it wasnt for our defense I think we would have lost that.

Good Omens

That is one of the worst games I have seen us be involved in, in years. You know what though, couldn’t give a monkeys, tonight was all about a result. Proud of the shift that a fairly scratch team put in, backs against the walls and they all showed their mettle. A special commendation must go to Carl Jenkinson, he was magnificent, a monster in the best possible way. Well done lads.

Redondante

I must say, although that was an awful, awful game to watch, we lost to League 2 Bradford last year with our whole first XI. That was not just dull to watch, it was maddening. Beating Premier League mid-table West Brom with what was effectively a mixture of second and third XI players is not at all bad.

Remember the invincibles because we aren't good anymore

Nachoooooo.thats what is called taking your opportunity. Excellent performance from the back 4. But by golly Nicky Bendthner does not know what taking his chance means(apart from the chance he took). He was simply awful. God awful. The worst striker that ever lived.

with the left and the right

completely disagree. this was a match where our passing lacked fluency especially from the midfield. Hayden looked completely lost, Eisfeld wasn’t getting on the ball, Arteta was understandably rusty, and Gnabry seemed to want all night to play a pass. As a result we played a lot of balls up to Bendtner for him to bring down which didn’t suit him. As we saw for the goal when he had the ball at his feet he was much more dangerous, we just didn’t play it to his feet often enough. I think it was a typical performance from someone playing… Read more »

This is forgetting a lovely through-ball for Eisfeld’s goal.

WizardOfOzil

Not sure how Bendtner can be slated on tonight’s performance. If anything he showed signs that he can provide adequate cover for the hfb.

Fellonious

Couldn’t agree more.

Rufusstan

Have to agree about Bendtner. He’s not quite up to speed, but the touch for Eisfeld’s goal was HFB worthy, and if he was fully match fit/confident you feel he’d have put his chance away. I would say it was great to step up for the first penalty and set the tone, but it is TGSTEL after all.

Having gone from – never put him on the shirt again – , to – he might do a job -. I’m now interested to see what he’d do given an hour with our first choice midfield behind him.

Fernando Torres

Hmm..still better than me..

I genuinely forgot why I hate Bendtner tonight I mean the “boy” was immense. I’m surprised you bash him, to me he just staked a case for our no.2 striker.

NCGunner

Testicular fortitude at its finest.

Now rest boys. Please rest.

Fantastic.

COYG.

Ólafur

Ugly game, but well won.

Eisfeld showed good composure in front of goal, but he was a bit shit otherwise. Need to bulk up and learn how to get more involved in the game before he can become a serious contender.

I think it was asking a bit much of Gnabry to start this game after starting against stoke this weekend, don’t think he’s quite at that level yet. He looked knackered and out of his depth tonight.

Akpom was a breath of fresh air. Bendtner needs to get fitter.

Anywho, I feel elated!

jäck jäck jäck

Call me sentimental but I was weirdly glad to see big Mick back in Arsenal colours. Ah Mick. Did a decent job I thought, could have done with better service. Anyway, good win for the young guns, and I managed to get through it without smashing my head through the wall! Success!

DatArse

Well we barely pulled that one off, we were honestly lucky to have won that won, the baggies were very unlucky with several chances in extra time. These nervy matches are the result of our unfortunate lack of depth. Although at the end of the day a win is a win. Seriously lucky though, some atrocious penalties.

SS

Lack of depth? We have 9-10 players out. Even CFC or ManCity will have to field youngsters with that many injuries.
Yes, we were a tad lucky, but with the luck we have with injuries, I think we deserved this much luck.

DatArse

We had to start bendtner of all people. Although yes, we do have a ton of injuries, i feel like we’re thin in places. Especially the wings and striker.

Malaysian Gooner

The reason why our wing looks thin because because every senior player who plays in those positions are injured (i.e. Podolski, Cazorla, Theo, Ox, Rosicky).

That’s 5 players. If we go by the usual philosophy of squad depth of 2 players for every position, we’ve actually got a very good squad that’s been bit by a horrible injury crisis. We’re lucky that Gnabry is a rough gem and not just some random youth player because he’ll be important in the coming weeks.

Dick Swiveller

Some impressive work under pressure from the youngsters, aside from the bottle of putting away the penalties they also looked assured and positive (generally, Ryo being the notable exception), love a good shootout win but was easily the most entertaining part of the night…

paulos

Finished the night with a front six averaging 19.3 years of age. Now that’s playing youth.

In other news, Elche just equalised against Real Madrid but they’ve been given a penalty in the final seconds.

A Yank

Criminal what that ref did to Elche with added added time and the penalty.

As for Arsenal… Woot!

A Yank

In case anyone cares to see it. It’s in the 5th minute of 3 minutes of signaled stoppage. Pepe pretty clearly hooks the Elche defender and pulls him down in the box. Ref falls for it. It is the same ref who handed Barca the win against Sevilla last week.

Double98

Bellerin looked like some player when he came on! Ozil like…

But without the umlaut 🙁

Redondante

Bellerin’s a right-back! If he’s Özilian then he’s being thoroughly wasted there!

Witoldo

Barcelona lad and it shows. Looked much more comfortable with the ball at his feet than the rest of our youth players, good awareness of what’s around him.

Keep in mind, though, that he came off the bench fresh after most everyone else had run 95 minutes.

2013-2014 = 2003-2004 !

Along with Gnabry, this Bellerin guy looks to be the real deal.

We can’t have three (3) rightbacks in the first-team and Sagna can’t keep running up and down the pitch when he’s 31, 32 or 33 yrs old.

That’s why me thinks next season Sagna will be converted fully into a centre-half, Jenks will be handed the #1 RB position, and Bellerin will be promoted to the first-team as cover/rota for Jenks.

Which means we’ll be having four (4) quality centre-halves in BFG/Spiky-Haired-Badass-Frenchman/Verminator/Sagna. So think all these rumours of Arsenal buying a centre-half during the next transfer-window are rubbish.

Fez

Bit of a bore of a game but great to get thorough. Thought Akpom was a positive, looked dangerous when he came on, tucked his pen away nicely and you could see his passion after scoring the pen and winning the match sprinting to Monreal! Would rather see maybe Arteta or someone else play right wing instead of gnabry as he doesn’t look completely ready just yet and 3 games in a week with ET is a bit much for a youngster.

Wrighty's Gold Tooth

Arteta playing right wing?

Tenzo

I only followed it on the Live Blog, but Gnabry sounded pretty awful, was that the case? And how was Ryo? He’s my second man crush after Theo.

Dkgooner

Ryo was awful, I don’t recall one single cross hitting one of our players, most of them were far, far behind or over our players, and the rest were kicked directly into the feet of West Brom players, he couldn’t dribble… all in all a terrible match for him.

Bendtner was OK, if he can keep this up, and wants to accept a place as a backup he’ll do fine there. A nice assist, good fighting, only critci is the poor handling of the nice through ball from Gnabry, but the lad hasn’t played for over two years, that’ll improve.

MERTESCIELNY

would love to see more of eisfeld, akpom and bellerin. gnabry looked tired today and it showed with a really below-par performance, and seeing as ryo looked to be feeling it at the end there, i would love to see eisfeld get a start this weekend (he also only played 90 mins today not 120). i think he has the talent and will fit in seamlessly if given the chance

Redondante

I’m sorry, but Eisfeld did absolutely nothing aside from score. Every time I’ve seen him the same thing’s struck me – he isn’t quite a midfielder, but he’s not a striker either. He’s just Eisfeld. And you want him to start at Swansea?! Whom would you like him to replace – Wilshere, Ramsey or Özil?!

Bitter Pill

That was a close call. We really do need to think about getting a striker in January. The Greatest Striker That Never Left!!! *massive face palm*

Topgunner89

Nacho Nacho pen!

I want to see another Nacho pen!

gooner odst

Chuba Akpom take a bow son. Well done Jenkinson.

To be honest our back 5 not being subbed was key to our victory and were pretty solid throughout (except when a-milf-filter hit the post and their goal). Our forward line wasn’t as productive as a whole but Akpom really livened it up near the end there, and Jenks was doing his bit too.

Double98

Ozil wudda been watching and I bet he can’t wait to use bendtner’s shin rebounds to assist off of

jodoe

Gnabry was awful. plays around with the ball too much and loses possession.

Redondante

He was very decent on the left wing and as a number 10. He struggled on the right. But he’s one of the few who I’m sure will make it at a top club (Eisfeld, Olsson, Ryo, Bendtner(!) may have to look a level or two down). He has a lot of good attributes, but nothing like a complete game. Not too surprising – he has just turned 18 after all.

Dick Swiveller

Nah, our midfield was carrying two passengers and not one of them was named Serge, we lacked the fluency due to the mismatched nature of the team and neither Eisfeld nor Ryo offered much, Gnabry might have dallied on the ball a little but mostly due to a lack of options; he did fine and will get a deserved start on Saturday.

Amusa

Great victory by an inexperienced Arsenal side vs a full strength WestBrom.
Can’t complain about winning ugly, as long as we keep on winning.

Heisenberg

I saw the whole match in my local on Al Jazeera Sports. A tight cagey affair with lots of moments of brilliance from our young guns. When TGSTEL scored his penalty there was a massive roar and lots of high fives. I hate penalty shoot outs, but don’t mind them when you win. Roll on Chavski at Emirates! COYG

For this group of kids to actually win against a strong West Brom side is absolutely incredible. The wonders it will do for their belief. They might have looked a little out of their depth at times, but what would you expect when they’re up against seasoned adults for the most part.

Hopefully our injury crisis has stemmed though by the time we play Chelsea because we’re going to need a few more experienced bodies for that game.

LastNightEboueSavedMyLife

Awesome victory. Wierd query. Why do we have few players with 20 and 30 something on their shirts but a fuck load of 40’s? Doesn’t make any sense. That was a properly random game but I’m fucking dancing!

Rufusstan

We are using almost all of those shirt numbers in the 20s, and we seem to use the 30s, 40s, 50s for the Academy/U21s when they play in the first team.

Actually, having a quick look at the squad numbers, the only unassigned shirts between 1-30 are 18, 27, 29, the rest are with first teamers.

Above that there are gaps, I guess because fewer numbers are assigned permanently, and more young players come and go.

Merseforever

Top performance by Jenkinson tonight. Played with heart, defended well, attacked well and run his lungs out right until the end! I salute you Jenko!

Also, I think we have a real talent on our books in Akpom. Looks very assured, decent pace, skillfull, fairly strong and he’s only 17, so he’s only gonna get stronger. Come on Chuba lad!

Clock End Mike

Man of the match? The away support, by a long chalk. The travelling Gooners were just amazing. If they got tired too, they didn’t show it.

After that, it’s a tight call between Mertesacker and Jenkinson, in my book.

Rufusstan

Kind of helps when the away support is a third of the crowd. That’s not to put them down, I thought they were amazing, and while they always dominate, you’d have thought they were the home crowd tonight. The fact that we can get around 6000 to travel for a midweek game in this cup is wonderful, especially when only half the usual home fans turn up. While I don’t usually complement the home fans much (especially as I am one of them most of the time). it says a lot that the Emirates will be full to the rafters… Read more »

Are you on something, or did your trip to the US just give you instant diabetes? 🙂
(The comment about Vermaelen suggested the first, but there you go)

Der Springer

Didn’t really get a good look at Bendtner’s capabilities tonight given the kids he was playing with and the lack of service compared to what he would get from Ozil, Ramsey, etc.
Not a great game but we came away with the win and that is all that matters.

Witoldo

Looked off the pace and many of his touches were heavy, but that through-ball to Eisfeld was perfectly weighted. His passing and link-up ability has always been above average for a striker, I’ve thought.

Goatee_of_Robert_Pires

I think the entire back 4 plus the keeper were solid. In midfield Arteta was captain cool as usual and Hayden looked confident except a few rash challenges. Upfront we were quite poor. Ryo was good defensively, but offensively poor. Eisfield looked very lightweight pushed out of the ball quite easily. However his reputation in front of goal got justified. Gnabry was lively, but had a lot of Gervinho moments. Bendtner picked up from where he left off, seemed to have learnt nothing in the last 2 years. Akpom looks the real deal amongst all the youngsters. Bellerein and Olsson… Read more »

he wasnt that bad actually, though really should have put that one away when he was in on goal. silly extra touch.

we looked lightweight in all but the defense. lost possesion far too much. this should be good for eisfeld, gnabry, ryo and hayden. Chucking them in at the deep end and making them do a full match will be good for their head in the long run, even if it was risky tonight. theyl learn a lot, i just wish zelalem was involed.

It is clear that this Sir Balls fellow is just a stupid twat who likes winding up Arsenal fans. He has never given the team any credit whatsoever. He is either a Spud or a troll.

The away fans are always brilliant, Eisfeld always seem to score when he gets a chance in the team loan him out maybe for the experience, another win bring on the Chav cunts

Iceman

A good win for our young guns even if it was via penalties against premier league opponents. Mertesacker was immense tonight. Don’t know how many clearances he made and the goal we conceded was the one time he was beaten. The back four looked pretty solid through out and its important we can give these guys a run out. Jenko is someone who would improve massively if given the opportunity. Also felt that despite some missed passes and a terrible lunge of a tackle Hayden played pretty well as a defensive midfielder. A good night – but ruined by a fucking shit draw for the next round. Why couldn’t we get Birmingham or Hull?

Chelsea will probably bore us to death for 90 minutes – then nick an injury-time winner.

Dick Swiveller

Yep, holding out hope for a chance to go through but when their second string contains Mata you know it’s gonna be tough.

Jammathon

I think there will be one or two more first-teamers in the team against Chelsea than there were against WBA. And at home, it’s not the end of the world just yet. Stamford Bridge would have been depressing.

We still outplayed them….just dat they created better chances…..history shows we ve lost almost all our away games in this competition….so these guys deserve our credit…a better team lost against bradford remember

Clock End Mike

The young players did ok, but it’s fair to say AW will have learned little except that none of them, with the possible exception of Bellerin who looked calm and assured when he came on, is really ready for first team football. Gnabry and Akpom, though, could do with some more experience and confidence. It’s a big step up from Reserves football, and they will have realised that today if they didn’t know it before.
